THis is the current top 25 in college basketball.  I said in another thread earlier this would be an incredible year in college ball for shooting and this weeks stats bear that out....when Tommy was at the top of this chart he was between 44 and 47 per cent.  This is an incredible bunch of MAKERS. This year's benchmarks are way over the top . I would say anyone above 39 or 40 per cent is a maker in my eyes. Drop much below that and you got a shooter.....but my benchmarks tend to be a little higher and even moreso if a guy is taking upwards of 15-20 percent of the teams total shot numbers as he is then taking away scoring opportunities from others and it becomes a numbers/possessions equation.....that is the basis for Groce defending the three so aggressively...he held #23 Clarke (Butler) to 6/13 team 7/28, #19 Cosey (eku) to 4/13 team 6/22, #13 Moore (Colgate) to 1/6 team 7/23 essentially making shooters out of the country's top Makers.

The answer to your question lies in what you define as your benchmarks for what consititutes and maker and a shooter.....of course you could always look to see what other coaches are thinking.... Are they leaving a player open to take a shot or are they covering him up.

A final thought to ponder......... DJ is a pretty good maker at times. Would you ever leave him  open with less than 2 minutes left in a close game?

DJ is shooting 34 percent on 3-pointers, but I think that's where as you mentioned sometimes the statistics don't show true shooting ability. He doesn't get very many open looks. Many are from well beyond the arc. The average degree of difficult on his shots certainly is higher than those by most players. If he were more selective, I'm sure he easily could be over 40 percent.

By the way, for the sake of this discussion, here are the 3-point percentages for the team:
Wilkins 13-30 (43%)
Kellogg 23-55 (42%)
Baltic 6-15 (40%)
Offutt 22-59 (37%)
Hall 7-19 (37%)
Cooper 24-71 (34%)
Taylor 5-18 (28%)
Johnson 2-12 (17%)

Clearly the 3-ball is important to us.  I'd defend us for that for sure.  From what I've seen, we really want to get open 3-shots.

Talking about Indiana basketball, I have a older friend who is from Indiana and went to Frankfort High School.  Can anyone name the mascot?  Just think about that one.  And what is the team bus?

I 'll not give it away but the arena is named after Everett Case and looks very Convo ish right there on Indiana 28.

Everett Case later went on to coach at the collegiate level (kind of got run out of Indiana for rather brazen recruiting violations) winning 4 Southern conference titles and the first 3 ACC titles at NC State. .

For those that care...there is a scoreboard hanging from the very similar roof. LED panels got to be lighter than that thing.

From WIkipedia

Case was responsible for many innovations, both on and off the court, that fans now take for granted. Here are some that he either came up with or popularized:

  • Numbers on player jerseys.
  • Cutting down the nets after a big win.
  • Announcing starting players before the game.
  • Using the full-court press for long stretches of a game.
  • The backcourt rule. Case's teams would hold the ball in the backcourt to protect a lead, which resulted in the 10-second rule.
  • One of the first to film games and review film to prepare for a game.
  • Played music before games.
  • Invited a pep band to play at games.
And lastly for ALan.....I sat with the volley coach from Logan last night ....32 years in the system and he had no clue what association anyone with the Logan program had to do with the NBA., How about a clue.

Did you ever see him play?  That was back in the day of three tv stations and we (the folks in NE Ohio) were into the Browns and Indians.
