One post on their message board about the game and that was Sunday. Will be interesting to see if the black tarps are still multiplying at Millett.

It's Gameday and still no more posts about tonight's game on MiamiHawkTalk.
If this game was on  Saturday in Oxford, we could probably outnumber them in their own building...

Hard to believe the Dispatch has us as an 8 1/2 point favorite at Millett.

Seems that Miami's best assets are that they sometimes really shoot the ball well.  We gotta force some turnovers and get out in transition.  I'd also think that there will be situations where we can exploit our size advantage in certain matchups.

Really strange to see a Miami team that wants to play uptempo.  Hopefully, we will limit our turnovers and score some points off Miami turnovers.

Miami is one of the handful of teams we play that has worse rebounding stats than us.  That may come into play tonight.

Also hard to believe that they give up such a high percentage of FGs to opponents.  Gotta hope we can shoot a high percentage by beating their pressure and getting some easier transition buckets.

I never feel extremely confident going into Millett, but I think we have a good chance to win this one if we bring our B game or better.  Anything less than our B game, combined with a good Miami effort, could cause us trouble.  After all, Miami might not be having a good year, but they are 5-2 at home.

I have to assume that Charlie cringes whenever he watches them play.

These Wednesday night Miami games are the dumbest thing the MAC is doing right now.

I don't care how much Mimai sucks right now -- because it is a constant . These are the flagships, and they've been relegated to an untelevised weeknight every cotton picking year.

To an extent, I agree with you.  However, it's in Oxford, which means regardless of it being on Wednesday or Saturday, no more than 1,500 fans will show up anyway.

We get Miami and Kent on Saturdays in the Convo.  Other than relegating Akron to a Wednesday night when they visit Athens, the MAC office did pretty well.  Akron on a Saturday is a guaranteed 11,000+ crowd.  They dropped the ball there . . .

I know the MAC can only do so much without coming off as favoring us, but you would think at this point in time for basketball they'd schedule all of our home games and the two Akron-Kent State games before even touching the rest of the league. You'd think they'd want the one team that does a solid job with attendance playing in the best time slots every single week.

To add on to that, they had to know Akron-Ohio would be THE matchup this season. Need to show those games off.

Donuts,

I couldn't agree more, especially when it comes to MAC football and basketball televised games. This has been a pet peeve of mine for a couple of decades, dating to Sportschannel Ohio. Last Saturday was a good example of what the MAC should do: I watched at Cat's Eye the KSU-UA game on ESPNU, pitting two of the league's better teams in front of a good crowd; I then headed down to the Convo for a STO televised game in front of almost 8,000 between two athletic teams.

Unfortunately, too many times a televised game is between two bottom feeders in front of high-school-like crowds (with apologies to some Indiana high schools). Two recent STO games as examples: EMU at BG and CMU at EMU.

The MAC and the TV that goes with it seems to be more about trying to make things fair for everyone rather than showcasing the league. Even a casual observer of the MAC could look at a STO or even midweek ESPN football schedule and tell you which ones will need the most creative camera crews in the world to hide the fact there are hundreds of people there.

Yes, this is an Ohio board, but the numbers do not lie. We should be showcased a lot more throughout the year. The ball was really dropped, especially this season. Akron and/or Ohio should be involved in at least 75% of these broadcasts. This seems like pretty basic, elementary-type stuff, so I'm going to give the powers that be the benefit of the doubt that other factors play into the scheduling. If not, well, the MAC needs serious help. You can't expect to get respect from other conferences when you disrespect your own top institutions.

To be fair...last year's game was scheduled for saturday afternoon before ESPN swooped in and moved it to the Sunday at 8 pm slot.

At least the game at Akron is a Saturday, 1 out of 2 ain't bad for the MAC offices.

I'm of the opinion that at the current time, EMU, NIU, and CMU shouldn't ever get a TV home game until they can make their arena's look decent on TV.  Their programs attendances are so embarrassing to the rest of the conference it's no longer laughable, it's pathetic. Miami isn't far behind.  For a means of comparison might, I wonder how we'd see how the MVC gets its teams on TV.  How much more often is Creighton or Wichita State on than Evansville?

I will agree that the conference should be doing all it can to emphasize it's marquee teams and match-ups.  To me, right now that means OU vs. Miami, Kent, Akron, (Buffalo many years); Akron vs Kent, BG vs Toledo, directional Michigans when they play at WMU.  I'm sure I'm missing some, but you get the point.  No one wants to see EMU or NIU's games on TV.  I'm not even sure if they have 1500 fans anymore, much less 1500 that are willing to come to the arena.

If Akron was played here on a Saturday with both teams playing at a minimum 1 loss in conference play, with a student promotion and other stuff. We could possibly get a sell out if not close.

1974 Ohio student population <14,000.  2013 student population >20,000

1974 BGSU and Bobcats square off on a week night and pack the Convo and the 110 sits under the basket not taking up student seats (which means capacity even greater back then).

Akron game should be on a week night and leave the lesser competition  for Saturdays.

Free throws!

We are lucky that Miami can't hit breakaway layups, but this started getting too close for comfort because the Bobcats can't make free throws.

edit: However, we are winning on the road which seemed nearly impossible earlier this season and that is a plus!

Ugly finish after being up as big as we were.  Still, a win is a win.  GO CATS!

This game was over at the 13 minute mark when we were up by 22. I am not surprised that Miami got a little closer.
Winning on the road by 12 is a great win. The spread was only 6.5.
6 in a row. We are now 2-0 on the road. That's big.
That should give the guys some confidence for Saturday.
Maybe we are hitting our stride.
Let's hope so.

Wow...if some think football attendance is an indicator that Ohio is in a league by itself and should be looking for or making greener pastures, what is MAC basketball saying?  There are OBVIOUSLY a bunch of schools in the MAC that no longer belong in Div 1 sports.  It's disappointing we are associated with them.  My mom always said you are judged by the company you keep.  No wonder we are not taken seriously!

From the boxscore...turnovers:  us 16, non-entities 10.  Else we'd really have thrashed 'em.

Tonight was a good road win.  But it fades if we don't keep it up.

Fiami really packed them in last night for their first +2K crowd of the season. The 2,200 fans easily outdistanced their previous high of 1.7K.   Sorry but that's friggin pathetic.

The consensus from the guys I was with was 1,200 actual attendance. There were about 300 people on the opposite side, 300 in the student section (they offered to feed 300 student-athletes who were introduced at half and promptly left) and 600 on the side we were on. I would estimate 150 to 200 Ohio fans.

I've always been a supporter of staying in the MAC, and seeing the MAC do well.  I'm starting to change my tune.  What is with the apathy at 2/3 of MAC schools?  I understand at OHIO things are going very well in many sports, and attendance is at an all time high, but in many of the worst years I've seen (since 1995) we still have seen better turnouts than most of the conference.  Even in football when we weren't very good.

This is off the topic of the thread, but is there a way to force a team OUT of the conference?  EMU has been reduced to a junior college or community college.  I was just perusing their attendance figures in football and basketball in the last season.  It's incredibly bad:  Less than 1000 people at the last football game of the year.

One thing we don't take into account in the situations at some schools is that they have hockey, and that seems to more popular with some students.  Last night, there was not a hockey game.  But even that said, if you have a student body of 15k, and a local population of 20-25k with Hamilton and Fairfield 30-40 minutes away, why can't you get 5,000+ in the house at least on Saturdays?
