Hockey games were a blast back in the 90s. It was like going to a cock fight in Tijuana, it had a real underground feel to it and the players and the fans were way rowdy. Saw a chick right in front of me get beamed in the noggin with a flying puck, it was awesome.

"It was like going to a cock fight in Tijuana"

I will nominate that as the quote of the day!

Ohio Hockey games in the 80's were like a scene out of Slapshot.
This was before Bird had plexiglass windows around the ice.
Chain link fence above the boards.  It was like a WWE cage match .
The fans sat close enough to rattle the fence when the visiting team skated onto the ice.

And 70's. First hockey game I ever went to in Bird was my Frosh year fall '77, guy says to me "you should go, cheap beer (3.2% mind you), and everybody throws it on the other team players". I went, it was true, I did, and it was fun!

Wow - what a complex thread. Sum up my thoughts:

1. Kicking Fiami At Any Time is good.
2. Hockey is cool, and OUr club team is a blast.
3. If we could get into A10 for BBall I am pretty much all for it. Majority of the rest of the MAC is just simply a "Conference Fail"........

My perception in recent years is that the interest in our club team has declined.

If true, that makes me sad. Friday & Saturday night hockey was always a good time, especially prior to turning 21. I remember taking my neighbor's girlfriend to her first hockey game freshman year (2001), versus WVU. The best hockey fight ever happened that night. 10 guys on the ice in five separate fights. The goalies are at their separate ends, they look at each other, shrug, and head to center ice. 20 minutes later, they finally get the equipment sorted out, and the ejected players take a lap to a standing ovation.

I always wanted to join Gang Green to get a t-shirt, too. But I was cheap and decided I'd rather have gas/beer money.

That was the season I covered the team for The Post (my first beat as a big-time sportswriter!).

I can vouch for every detail of C Money's description of that fight. An incredible spectacle. The goalies making eye contact, shrugging, then skating to center ice to start trading haymakers was my favorite part.

So stay in the MAC for football and go to the A-10 for every other sport. problem solved

Assuming the A-10 wants us and the MAC would keep us.

I am tired of all this talk about us going to the A-10.  First of all, and biggest complaint from me is the tourney.  Who wants to go to Brooklyn?  I don't know about all of you, but I can't afford to go to Brooklyn for a tourney.  Plus, I love going to Cleveland.  I know where everything is and my wife loves going to the area malls.  We go to a different one each day.  I am not down for going to A-10.  I know the MAC isn't the top of bill but, if we keep putting together great teams, we should have no problem representing the MAC in the Big Dance.  We can make our own name as we did last year.  We got a lot of exposure just because of what we accomplished and where we came from.   Do you think we would have gotten all that love if we were in the A-10?

Exactly.
UMASS: A10, no football
Temple: A10, no football
UCF: Atlantic Sun, no football

This kind of ties in with another thread talking about MAC attendance. This is a column in today's Dayton Daily News.

RedHawks rally on special day for AD's son

Quinten Rollins drove the lane with 19 seconds left and the shot clock about to run out and lofted a feathery floater over a pair of Falcon big men to seal the game.

Unfortunately almost none of the 16,300 students who go to Miami saw any of this.

When the game began, there were 28 students sitting in the student section behind the north basket. Sprinkle in a few adults and some young kids recruited to wave the oversized placards bearing the faces of Betty White, Snooki and Justin Bieber and you still had a pretty forlorn sight.

Attendance for the game was announced at 1,405 and that may have been generous.

“We do have to do a better job of recruiting students to the games,” said Sayler, who was named as the replacement for Boston College-bound Brad Bates in mid-December and just started the job Jan. 1. “The students set the tone for the whole facility and when they aren’t here it puts a hole in the whole night.”

Tha A10 probably isn't a good fit anyway.  If you want a stronger conference, I would go after some of the Missouri Valley/Horizon and Summit schools in Ind, Ill, or Iowa.  At least you are staying true to your Midwestern roots.  i don't know if So Ill or No Iowas are considering moving up or not but that is about the only place to look anymore!

A quick look at the Sagrins shows that No Iowa, Ind St, YSU, SIU, and Ill St are ALL higher ranked in BOTH football and Basketball than about half of the current MAC.  In fact, in football, these schools would be #6-10 (above CMU, WMU, MU, Buff, EMU, AK, UMASS).  In Basketball,  It is even worse for current MAC schools.  Four of the five schools (all but YSU and SIU) would be in the Top 6!  In other words, from a strength standpoint, I'd trade about half the MAC for these schools right now and end up with a stronger conference!

I'm ready to be pelted but that is just the way the numbers lay out!

I don't know about Horizon league... That seems like a step down and a pointless move. Now the Missouri Valley Conference is ALOT better. With Wichita and Creighton national ranked every other year, with good attendance in the league. I rather be in that league for basketball then the MAC or Horizon.

My rankings of leagues would be:

A-10
MVC
MAC
Horizon

Yeah, he must have gotten it due to Miami's dominance on the gridiron during his tenure.

How in the world did he get an ACC job? By all accounts, Miami Athletics have been in significant decline over the last 5 years. From the field/court to the stands to donations, I can't believe any of it painted a very pretty picture.

He's definitely leaving a football and basketball trainwreck, but his 10-year tenure had some good accomplishments, particularly for a place that sucks as much as Fiami. Taken as a whole, athletics performed pretty well for those 10 years, and the academic performance was strong. Last and probably not least, there were not many candidates who had experience with hockey (huge for BC) and FBS football.

Not saying it's a great hire, but I don't think it's insane either.

And BTW - I was not one of them. However, in my superstitious mind (but based on factual historical results) could have been the real reason we won. Guess I can't go to a game in Oxford for the rest of my life........................

It was hard to say but from the online feed it looked like there were a decent amount of Ohio fans. Its sad to see one of the alleged "flagships" of the MAC draw such poor crowds. I know Miami was bad last year but it wasnt that long ago that they were one of the top teams in the MAC and they cant draw flies.

Thing is...when they were good, they didn't draw well either. There's just not much interest there, it seems.

The subject of this thread is false.

Kicking Miami when they are down is something the original poster meant to do.   And, it's a good thing.  Stand up like a man and be proud . . . kick that defenseless redchicken . . . kick and kick again.  Oh, does the feel good.  Just remember this: redchicken hate is not hate, it's the highest expression of love.  When it comes to Oxford everything is turned upside down.

Miami was pretty excited about their crowd last night of 2,200. That's only about 11,000 less than when they played us in Athens last year.

Wasn't that crowd for Ohio Miami's best home attendance of the season so far?

I was there, and I'm guessing that Ohio fans accounted for maybe 300-400.

Student section was pretty full.

But...at times it was so quiet in there...

And Miami was emphasizing an effort to support anti-cancer medical programs...a fantastic cause, but it seemed surreal to have video testimonies by people recounting their experiences battling cancer at halftime, etc.  Again, you can argue that it's such an important message that it's worth getting out there during games...but I don't think you'd see this at Ohio.
