Due to a complete overreaction this is getting national coverage now. This is such a gutless move cancelling the game about a completely unrelated incident 10 hrs earlier where nobody was hurt and nobody will be in immediate danger.

Agreed. If this was a spree killer he would have killed the guy that he robbed this morning.  Some tweeker in the Plains is laughing his arse off right now.

I agree with you both. I'm just saying I understand the line of thinking.  The jerks from (Kr)Akron are already making fun of this on Twitter.  I guess being used to shootings and robberies is a nice way to live.

This is very stupid; someone really over-reacted and dropped the ball. It would be different if it was an active shooter. Instead, it was an armed robbery, which the criminal is probably running or driving very far away. The reaction by the University is just more proof academia is producing a society of wimps. This is embarrassing.

Meh, who cares about what they say.  The only way they get attention  is through Twitter.

I would be dumbfounded and LOL all day at another university for making this decision.  Since it is my own university, I'm just disgusted and annoyed.

Couldnt agree more. We are going to look like a bunch of Mayberry rubes by going DEFCON 1 over a 5 dollar robbery. There are probably much larger robberies every weekend in the dorms, although they dont have the zeitgeist of the moment evil gun involved.

Thats not the way you're supposed to look at this. The way you're supposed to look at this is "OH MY GOD! THERE WAS A GUN NEAR CAMPUS! AND IT WAS USED IN A CRIME NO LESS!!!!! WE'VE GOT TO SHUT EVERYTHING DOWN!!!!! WON'T SOMEBODY PLEASE THINK OF THE CHILDREN"

Given this precedent, will classes be cancelled next year (approximately the week following thanksgiving) when thousands of armed persons are prowling the non-town/city areas of athens county?

Why should we be embarrassed? That seems like an appropriate response to an over reaction. I'm sure I'd have been uptown as soon as it was announced that my classes were canceled. I shudder to think what I'd have said if i'd have had access to twitter.

Sure not locking your doors and hiding in the closet is an appropriate way to handle the over reaction but dressing up in the same clothes worn by a fugitive and going out drinking shows a total lack of common sense.

Okay, but look at it from OU's point of view.  If they DON'T cancel the game and close campus and something else happens, say someone gets shot, then they get a black eye for not doing this. It sucks, yes, and I too have had my plans messed up because of this.  At the same time, I certainly understand the thinking given the situation with gun control related issues.  It's really a no win situation caused by some jerk robbing someone for five bucks.  I hope they catch the perp, and I hope they end up in prison.

Just another day for OSU:

Columbus Dispatch wrote:expand_more
Ohio State University spokeswoman Amy Murray, an employee since 1985, said she recalls no armed robbery or other crime on or off its main campus that prompted the cancellation of classes. Robberies are not unusual in campus neighborhoods.

OSU did not cancel classes, for example, in 2010 when the so-called "Church Lady Bandit" robbed the U.S. Bank branch in the Ohio Union. The woman implied she had a gun, but did not display one.

It is already impossible for a bad guy to be on campus with a gun.  Everyone knows it is already illegal to have a gun on a college campus in Ohio.  Perhaps another law to keep all guns at least 10 miles from a campus would really help.  The bad guys would have to stop well before they ever reach campus.  Problem solved!

I don't know that we've ever had an intern from UC that hadn't been robbed. Part of the college experience. Can't believe this.

Interesting point. By not playing this sub 100 (150? 200?) RPI team now it could keep our RPI competitive, especially with a win saturday.

I am so pissed! I didn't get this news and just drove an hour and a half from columbus for the game! I'm sitting in the convo parking lot right now! They are towing tons of vehicles in this lot. I was going to just park and walk uptown to get something to eat, but I'm afraid my car will get towed.

But then what do you do when they are just outside that 10 mile radius? Then you have to shut everything down inside that radius.

I called the athletics department and the answer to my question is yes, I would have been towed, because there technically isn't a game. No sign anywhere outside that the game has been cancelled. Completely unacceptable! If not for this messageboard post, I likely would have been towed!

Keep in mind the decision to cancel or post pone the game had to be made almost immediately because EMU was ready to get out of Dodge. They were asked if they could stay and play tomorrow and they refused.

So looking at the situation a few hours later it seems logical to continue with the game tonight but by this point the opposing team is half way to Ypsilanti.

If you want to be mad at someone be mad at the Eagles.

If you want to blame someone for overreacting, I guess you would blame McDavis. That's who sent the email saying the university was closed and employees were to leave campus (causing the most massive traffic jam I've ever seen in Athens). Just saw a story on the news with a quote from McDavis saying if he errs, he will always err in favor of the safety of students, faculty and staff. So there you go. Overreaction, probably. But a sad sign of the times.

The robbery happened in the parking lot of Station St. Apts. and the guy ran to West Green. Maybe the university made a mistake in not locking down then to try to make it easier to find him ... by the time 3 hrs had gone by and he hadn't been caught, the guy could've been anywhere.

He still hasn't been caught, but other local law enforcement officials have been called in to assist. (I get a mental picture of Barney Fife putting his bullet in his gun.) Classes are to resume as normal tomorrow.

I'm just relieved to hear the game is rescheduled. I was all pissed off because I was worried it would count against us like a forfeit!

Help me with your logic, why should I be mad at the Eagles? Because they didn't agree to stay the night and play tomorrow? That doesn't help SS who drove from Cbus tonight, nor does it help anyone who made plans to be at this game tonight.  This one is on OU in my mind.
