At the under 12:00 timeout in the 2nd half, I took my son to the concession stand to get a snack.  The second floor concession stand had already closed down, so we had to go downstairs.  The only thing they weren't sold out of was an order of nachos.

The Akron student working the counter handed us the nachos, looked down at her price sheet and told me it was $4, so I handed her a $10 bill.  She started to use the calculator, but got confused.  She then called her manager over to help her figure out how much change I should get.

I wish I was making this up.

Be careful, Optimist. I shared almost an identical account of this from a game at Peden this past fall. Although I'm not sure it was an Ohio student with the poor math skills.

Just had a classroom discussion with my fifth graders about how information is power and had the students share examples of real life situation where this is true. I might add this situation to our afternoon class discussion.

That's why I insist that my nearly-12-year-old son refrain from using a calculator for his math homework.

It's also another symptom of our credit card society -- can't make change.

I'm really disappointed, because I thought this was going to be either a preview or trailer for Sad Akron Story II.  Which will be showing at Quicken Loans Arena on March 16.

I've had a college student in Columbus ask me what 10 percent of 10 dollars was.

It kills me watching some of these kids trying to figure the proper change when you give them $5.02 for a $3.77 bill.  What was meant as a way to make their life a little easier ends up being an angst-filled episode as the gears grind away.

Truth be told, I've had almost exactly the same experience in the Tower Club concession area in Athens.  And also, I'm pretty certain Akron has outside groups volunteer to run their concessions as a form of fundraising, so the worker wasn't necessarily an Akron student..

I wanted to buy some wine by the case for clients.
I  was at a winery and inquired about a possible discount to buy 4 cases.
The college girl (OSU) that was helping me said they give a
10% discount for a case. She paused for a moment in
thought and then continued that if I bought 4 cases that
would be 4 x 10% discount so they would give me 40% off of 4 cases.
I tried to buy 10 cases from her but the Manager got involved.

If you were really  trying to take advantage of her, I'm glad I'm not one of your clients.

SBH may be correct. She was college-aged, but that doesn't necessarily mean she was an Akron student. I didn't try to fool her about the amount of change that was due to me. My 11 year old told her the answer before the manager could. I should've just let them keep the change because I just lost the $6 on 14 Red at the Horseshoe a few hours later anyway.

Should have corrected her... 10% off the first, 20% off the second, etc etc.  You might have been able to drink a case by the time she figured the bill on 19 cases.

As I sit here listening to the original version of Peter, Paul and Mary doing Blowing In the Wind and before I head downstairs to watch episode three of House of Cards, I have to weigh in on this one.  In my mind it's very simple.  When digital clocks/watches replaced clock and watches with numbers whether they be English or Roman, that's when math skills went south.  7:45 means nothing.  A long hand on the 9 and a short one almost to 8 means 3/4 to the hour of 8.  A long hand at 6 with a short one close to 4 means half past 4.

I think I get it - "How many times.............." - ?

Which made me think - here's a good theme song for the "kron game 2/20 (not original artist version either - but they did play in Athens.....and they pretty much always kicked ass..........

I see a lot of claims and no evidence math skills have gotten worse.

Alan, just this morning I played PP&M's version of "Freight Train" on my iPhone.  It's in my iTunes library.  I have "Blowin' in the Wind" in iTunes, too.  I liked a lot of their songs back in day, and still do.  Just thought I'd end the day on this note of congruence as I head to bed .

Here you go. Also, 1970 was the first year of mass production of the digital wrist watch.  Not sure what happened in 1989 to reverse the trend of falling math scores but from 1970 to 1988 there was a pretty big dip.
