This has to be the most anticipation we've had for a regular season game since 2005, no?

Huge game Saturday.  The key to this will to be to take Zeke Marshall out of the game.  Best way to do this is to move the ball underneath or cross the lane when taking the ball to the bucket.  If we are static with the ball underneath, he will have a big game against us.  Getting him out of position and attacking the basket will get him in foul trouble.  Once you're in his head, he's done.  I also want to see us push the tempo; that seemed to be when Bowling Green was making their bacon on offense.

I think our depth and balance will be enough for us to pull out a victory.  With us having no turnaround from a midweek game, we should be able to outlast them.  Cats by 6.  GO OHIO!

I hate Akron and can't wait for the game. I have Cavs/Thunder tickets at 7:30 and don't care when we make it to The Q as long as we leave the JAR with a Bobcat win.

Reggie has been playing great all season. I'll bet he comes out and goes right at Zeke. If the Keely/Smith combination plays with swagger, OU will win the game. DJ should make Abreu look like a fool.

If Zeke has a big game against us, that would be a first.

Freshman year-
@OU- 0 pts, 2 reb, 0 ast, 0 blk
@UA- 0 pts, 3 reb, 1 ast, 2 blk
MACC- 8 pts, 4 reb, 1 ast, 1 blk

Sophomore year-
@UA- 9 pts, 5 reb, 0 ast, 1 blk
@OU- 8 pts, 2 reb, 0 ast, 3 blk

Junior year-
@UA- 17 pts, 6 reb, 2 ast, 3 blk
@OU- 4 pts, 6 reb, 0 ast, 0 blk
MACC- 8 pts, 4 reb, 1 ast, 3 blk

8 game Avg- 6.8 pts, 4.0 reb, 0.6 ast, 1.6 blk

This is the all mighty 7 footer, former top 100 recruit out of high school? He's reached double digits just once in 8 games vs Ohio, and that was the game in Akron last year where the refs handed it to him. Zeke is Weke.

For fun, here's DJ's stats for those games-

Freshman year-
@OU- 11 pts, 3 reb, 5 ast, 3 stl
@UA- 33 pts, 7 reb, 5 ast, 3 stl
MACC- 23 pts, 7 reb, 6 ast, 0 stl

Sophomore year-
@UA- 13 pts, 8 reb, 15 ast, 1 stl
@OU- 25 pts, 8 reb, 9 ast, 2 stl

Junior year-
@UA- 13 pts, 3 reb, 4 ast, 3 stl
@OU- 11 pts, 2 reb, 10 ast, 2 stl
MACC- 23 pts, 1 reb, 6 ast, 4 stl

8 game Avg- 19.0 pts, 4.9 reb, 7.5 ast, 2.3 stl

I can't recall a game I've anticipated more. Which game in '05 do you refer to?

Nice compilation of stats Perimeter Post.  I got into a "discussion" about Zeke on Twitter yesterday.  I've always felt he's highly over rated. His only important quality is as a defender in the half court.  Otherwise, to me he's just an above average very tall player.

I'm guessing when we hosted Buffalo. Or it could have been when we went up there. They had that game circled.

One of my favorite things about Ohio-Akron games is watching D.J. get in Abreu's head.  In five head-to-head matchups Abreu has 14 assists and 26 turnovers and a couple of loud FU's to his coach or teammates.

In those same five games D.J. has 44 assists and 15 turnovers...and a 4-1 record.

I love all these stats.  Zeke has never really bothered me and these stats tell me why.  However, while maybe not a "big" game (especially compared to a number of DJ's games against 'Kron), his 17 pts, 6 rebounds, 2 assists and 3 blocks up there last year is not an insignificant game in a 'Kron victory.  He fouled out, but so did Ivo, Reg, Jon and Walt.  The 'Cats shot horribly in that game.  I love that DJ has, on average, outrebounded Zeke over 8 games and has flat out outrebounded him in 5 of 8 games.

Anybody know when and where Zeke's "big" games have occurred?  I couldn't find his career highs anywhere after a quick look.

Defensively, here's something I'm concerned about...Treadwell getting the ball in the low post, using his bulk and post moves to score some...we then try to double team him and he shovels it to Zeke or Forsythe.

Zeke's big games almost all occur on the defensive end.  His big games are shown by opposing teams' shooting percentage being low and multiple bigs being in foul trouble.   He's never going to be "the guy" on offense though.  He's only scored 20 points once in a MAC game but he does take a lot of work and attention to defend him.

I'm a lot more concerned about Treadwell than I am Zeke.  I think if we limit them to one-and-done and keep Treadwell off the offensive boards, we win this game.  If we get dominated on the glass, we're in trouble.

I was initially impressed.  But then the game kept happening, and I realized that BG probably has only one legitimate D1 player on their entire team, and so anything that Akron did well lost all of its' luster . . .

BG.  Bad.

Zeke is a quality player.  And I understand his "advanced offensive" numbers look nice.  But I still think he's soft, and a headcase.  Most of his numbers are great because he gets loads of dunks and layups because he's really tall and plays in a league that doesn't have great bigs.

I expect a close game -- much like last year -- on Saturday.

When they come to Athens, I think we beat them handidly.

If/when we meet them in Cleveland, another battle.

We're the best team they've seen this entire year outside of Creighton.  Should be a good one.

Agreed.  I could easily see him putting up the same type of numbers he put up against Kent.  (15 Points 16 Rebounds)

We suck at rebounding.  Akron is good at rebounding.

Ivo and Ric better be ready to bang on the glass, and we should probably be sending one of the guards to crash the boards as well.

And yet, at the same time, we were pounded on the boards against UNC last year, and still had a chance to win.

We are never going to beat great rebounding teams in that category, but we don't need to do that to win games.  Its not our style.

I (now) agree.  I have been hoping all season for us to fgure out how beat teams on the boards but we haven't and we're doing pretty damn well.  Of course I don't want us to ignore the boards or to go into games not thinking we have to hit them hard, but clearly we've shown that we can be outrebounded, sometimes badly, and still win games.

Looking forward to this one.  Saturday is OUr Superbowl.  Absolutely love watching Cooper and Abreu go at it.  Great basketball and passion.  I watched Akron vs BG last night.  While BG may not be any good this year, it is easy to see that they have A LOT of weapons.  Akron is a very good team and it's obvious that they are looking for some redemption on Saturday.

Yes.  They have the advantage at the post.   But, we can't afford to get shy down low. Get Zeke in some foul trouble and take some charges against Treadwell.  Should be a hostile environment. Like many have already said : Get into their heads like usual, be aggressive on defense, good ball movement, and battle for every rebound.  Do all this and their beloved streak is toast.

I know in another thread, someone took offense to Toledo's coach saying Akron has the most depth in the league because obviously Ohio has a lot of depth with anywhere from 9-11 players seeing a fair share of minutes each game. But truly, the Zips probably do have that beat. Eleven guys got eight minutes or more against BG. All 11 average 10 minutes or more per game. Nine of them average 5 points or more per game. The one guy the Zips don't like to take out is Abreu. His backup is a freshman, Betancourt, another Puerto Rican, who hasn't been much of a shooter or scorer this year.

Their depth in the post is great. Even if you do get Zeke in foul trouble, you have to deal with Treadwell, Harney and Forsythe. At the 2 and 3, Walsh, Gilliam, McAdams and Kretzer all are pretty good shooters. Ibitayo has struggled a little more.

Akron's got a little advantage inside. Ohio has a little advantage outside. The Bobcats have got to make shots and defend and rebound in the post.
