Isn't this sibs' weekend as well? Does the time change make a difference for the sibs planning on attending?

No Sibs weekend is the weekend before for the BG game.

Who's watching ESPNU at 11?

I'm typically up every morning at 6 so I like the 11:00 games if I'm not running the kids to a sports event.   I also know that I am not typical so I understand that this is not the optimum time for a college game to be played.  But it might be good practice for the 11:00 Bracket Buster game we are going to draw.

Really?

So we complain when we don't get a game on any network at anytime, and we complain when we do because it doesn't fit into everyone's schedule?

Seriously?

Hi,  Alum of a 15-5, 6-0 MAC basketball team who made an awesome run in the NCAA Tournament last year and happens to have a game at 11 am on a Saturday..

  Quit complaining.

Do we have any confirmation from the Athletic Dept. that it was definitively moved yet?

No announcement, but the schedule page on OhioBobcats.com now lists it at 11am on ESPNU.

Will this move hurt the attendance of the game? Yes

Will there be less students because of the start time? Yes

BUT, it's still the weekend of the Bobcat Blackout, a home game vs. Kent with a very good OU team possibly in first in the MAC at the time.

If we drew 6,000 for an 11am start vs. Ball State last year, I would have to believe that this game will draw around 7,000-8,000 people still which would make for a nice environment on TV and something good for our program.

And people complaining about the start time, stop it please! #3 Syracuse and Villanova were playing last Saturday morning at 11am on ESPNU. If you have a good game going on, people will watch.

Sure, it sucks that we probably don't have a chance at 10,000 people anymore but this will still be a good crowd and an entertaining game. Let's stop complaining about everything. The person above was 100% right. Sometimes, we complain no matter what hand we're dealt. Try to think positively about this.

What's better for the team and the game environment?

The Convo with 9k-10k present, with most of them having all day to enjoy Athens (aka - drinking beer uptown) and better student turnout and a more ruckous crowd.  Players get to sleep in and have their normal gameday routine.

<8k in the Convo, with fewer students due to hangovers.  People who live more than 90 minutes away having to get up and leave before 9AM.  Players likely not able to go through typical gameday routine.

I'm coming either way, but I'm way less excited about the trip than I was before the gametime was moved.  It would've been one of our better crowds of the year, now it'll be slightly better than a Wednesday tilt against EMU.  Who really cares if it's on ESPNU?  Anyone who wants to watch would've been able via ESPN3 or the webstream anyway.

This blows.  I was in for this +8.  Now, not so sure, considering 3 were coming from Louisville.

Pub lunch at noon followed by 5 hours of pregaming for a 7PM tip > Leaving Columbus at 9AM

Schaus.  Call ESPN.  Tell them, "Thanks, but no thanks."

This is the same type of plan about 14 guys and I had.  The numbers of that group could be cut down strictly because of tip time.  Like I said in the earlier post, I'll be there no matter what.  This type of plan is exactly why I think ALL of our games should be scheduled for later in the day at the outset.  What's wrong with making the standard home tip off 4pm to 7pm, instead of 2pm?  Then when the "wild cards" on TV get in the way, at least there are more that are later in the day?  My feeling, and maybe I'm wrong, is that later tip times generally lead to better attendance.  Also, it probably leads to more people spending the whole afternoon in Athens' various food & beverage establishments, and that is always a good thing for the local economy.

I don't get our "Blackout" basketball promotions. We have already worn black uniforms at home in the same night that we gave away black replica jerseys. What difference does calling a game the blackout game do?

Per the DJ thread:

DJ is projected to get his 900th assist and 600th rebound during the Kent game.  Projection can change between now and then, but that is how it currently stands.

Pro: he hits these marks while playing on national TV.
Con: may be fewer fans in stands (however, if they know he is going to hit thee milestones, are fans more likely to attend?)

It's Official

Two thoughts:

1)  Do we get any money for playing on ESPNU?  If so, then I feel better about this decision.

2)  I hope athletics puts together a creative promotion for this game.  How about free McDonald's breakfast to the first 3,000 students who show up wearing pajama pants or something?  I don't really care, but something to get students out of bed and into the Convo would be nice.

The MAC has a contract with ESPN. It covers football and basketball but is peanuts compared to the BCS conferences. You don't get any extra money for them adding a game per se. But if you become a bigger part of their programming, I guess that would help with your negotiations. There are very few places in the MAC right now where people actually buy the product. So the one chance this conference has is to try to drive more TV revenue. As conferences consolidate and move content in-house, the MAC could provide the glut of college-sports driven networks (now including CBS and NBC) with the cheap (compared to BCS conferences) DVR-proof content they seek.

FWIW, here is a link with ratings for ESPN games. Based upon the VMI/Coastal Carolina numbers, I would guess at least 100K households would watch. Which is much better than the Friday night Horizon League spot.

http://www.sportsmediawatch.com/2013/01/college-basketball-tv-ratings-numbers-for-most-of-the-games-so-far/

Saturday 11 AM games:
1/26 ESPNU Syracuse vs. Villanova TBD
1/19 ESPNU VMI vs. Coastal Carolina  0.1 rating (94K households)
1/12 ESPN2 Georgetown vs. St. John's  0.1 rating (197K households)
1/5   ESPN2 Ptt vs. Rutgers  0.3 rating  (401K housefolds)

A 0.1 rating...0.1?? Are you serious??

The fact that we're selling out to ESPN for a 0.1 rating is sad to say the least. We have absolutely sold our soul to TV. Give me a great atmosphere in the Convo with 10K screaming fans over an 11:00 am game watched by maybe 100K nationwide.

I'm sure you won't be complaining when we receive our yearly check from ESPN for being part of this TV contract.  This is also part of being in a conference.  We give up the right to turn these things down when we become part of the conference.  This is a good thing, no questions asked.  It is how you fund a program and continue to grow.

Like Ozcat and others have said - the OUT OF TOWN travelling contingent is very negatively affected by this time start. Athens is AT LEAST AN HOUR from..............EVERYWHERE (or as Lou Holtz recently said on ESPN - "Athens is 15 minutes from Columbus - by phone".). The OUT OF TOWN travelling contingent I would argue is the second most critical factor in big attendance figures, the students of course being first. Per Athens and impact, well the students are broke (but they may be indeed "blacked out" at 11:00 AM).

The difference between noon and 11:00 AM start - with an hour and 1/2 drive/park/get in (never mind wait in the concessions line) is HUGE (and of course even worse for those coming from parts further yonder). I'll be there, but it really stinks.

(Note to self - pack a Gatorade in my jacket so I don't have to worry about the concession line before game start, and fill up gas tank day before so I don't have to get stuck trying to get back on RT 33 coming outta that Speedway at Carroll behind some gomer that won't leave room for me to pull a right on red, and remember to watch out for that overzealous state trooper who hangs out before and after Nelsonville to get his monthly quota speeding tickets from southbound Bobcats hurrying to the game, and remember to get around that 16 wheeler before I have to slog along behind it all the way through Nelsonville, and remember to check the state highway construction updates to make sure the I 270/33 ramp is not closed down for some construction or accident outta nowhere when I had left just in time and have to figure out how in God's name to find a way around.................).

And that includes getting left in the dust of conferences re-alignments?

Because you can get to Athens, you prefer that. Though I have to point out 100,000 is more than The Convo can hold.

This is where I'm hurting on this one.  The fiance and I wanted to come down for the weekend and fit the game in, and by the time we get home from work and drive down there's no point in wasting money on a hotel Friday. The 7:00 PM start would have allowed us to drive down probably mid-morning to early afternoon Saturday, do some stuff, hit up the game, and stay in a hotel Saturday night and hit breakfast and bookstore on the way out Sunday.

Noe we would have to leave at 7:30 AM at the latest Saturday morning, or blow the lodging money on Friday instead (we'd get there so late Friday that the night is wasted, and would go home late Saturday afternoon instead, which sucks IMO)

First world problems, I know, but it still sucks. Chances are we come to Athens to visit still because it's been a while, and listen to Russ as we drive down.

The MAC is a stable conference.  Not being part of realignment is a good thing in our case.  We have a ways to go before we can join that conversation.

Temple has a game at 11:00 AM on ESPNU so it is not just the MAC that is doing this. I don't see the big deal.

How many people drive an hour to go to a Temple BBall game? In friggin' Philly, nearly 6M metro population, and only avg 8K per game................They are a "TV" program....................

EDIT - Well, I guess they could have worse traffic affecting their drive time than Nelsonville (or that other pesky state trooper over by Peebles coming in from Cincy)..................
