When I went negative for the first time in my Bobcat career (since enrolling as a student in 1994) I got beheaded by many of you who defended my thought that Ivo has disappeared, that Nick is pretty much a stagnant body on the floor and that JC is not the motivator that JG was. Now you should hide your heads and retract your statements. Screw the thought that this game didn't mean anything. Screw the "Cleveland only matters" crap. Screw the "It will damage Nick's psyche to bench him." There has been one and ONLY ONE variable that has changed from last year: JIM CHRISTIAN! Can you imagine this Akron team with friggin Quincy Diggs? It's time to say THIS TEAM NEEDS A CHANGE!

We've lost two conference games.

TWO.

Slow down on the coach changes.

But I'm with you on Ivo and Nick. What the heck has happened to those guys this year? At one point, Ivo had Abreu on him in the post, and he didn't even look at the basket. Nick is just losing confidence by the game. His shot looks like he's just going through the motions.

You can't blame it all on JC for not being a motivator. At some point, these guys gotta find it within themselves to pull out of the rut they are in.

I don't see anyone killing DJ for the awful shots he missed down the stretch and in OT. I understand we wouldn't have even been there without him, but with all the momentum and the game tied, he killed it yet again with a questionable shot.

I agree that it's hard to put it all on a coach but isn't it his job to put lineups together? I am flabbergasted at his inability to put the right guys together. JG seemed to have that certain something. He found TJ at his hottest in the MAC Tourney last year. He found Jon Smith at his hottest during games. T Wilk was outstanding tonight. Why the heck wasn't he in instead of Nick? I just feel like JC is going through the motions this year while he awaits Ndour, Bean and Setty. It really feels like it.

And I'm not in the larger group that thinks DJ should never be criticized. His overtime play was pathetic and i believe it killed his MAC POY chances. Seriously, outplayed again in a big game.

That's some solid, in depth analysis that really breaks down the coaching strategy tonight. Good post. Not reactionary at all.

This, by the way, is exactly why we can't have nice things.

There's some legitimacy to those complaints.

But we played well tonight in a great game.  Tonight is not a night for complaints.  Tonight we played something akin to how we played in the season ending run last year.

DJ and Walt, in particular, played well.  Reggie--fine.  Ricardo, T.J., Wilk, Stevie, Smitty--hustling.

Can't complain about tonight.

That's where you're wrong. I did point out key aspects of tonight's coaching strategy: There was none on our side. We were only in the game because the players did things..not because of adjustments. How the hell do you count Kretzer, who played at least 20 games in his high school career at the Convo, never being guarded. I know high school coaches that would have been prepared for that. Quit calling us reactionary and stop drinking the Kool-Aid Bobcat Love

You do realize that OUR SAME EXACT TEAM beat Akron by 30 last year at the Convo. Akron is missing not only Cvetinovic but Diggs. Pathetic. Yes, we played with heart but with no sense of purpose.

Maybe Dambrot is a better recruiter than Groce.

Because he couldn't keep control of the ball. Akron denied DJ the ball all second half, forcing Travis to play point guard. After about his third turnover, you just knew someone else was coming in.

He missed/wasn't ready for a couple of inbounds too. Frustrating. Perhaps not as frustrating as our string of missed-3's and long 2's at the start of the 2nd, but pretty frustrating.

So NIck was better? He got the ball across halfcourt! Wow! Congrats Nick. Now take a seat on the bench next to Ivo and enjoy playing behind Wingfield, Rico, Bean and Setty next year. You're a JG guy, not a JC guy and he's leaving you in to fail.

Neither PG defends.  Stevie got blown by several times.  DJ allows way too much penetration and that was while he was soft on Abreu, allowing 2 3s, just as in the first game.  The only guy physically capable of defendng Treadwell is Reggie, and he has to guard Zeke.  It's hard to play John and Reggie together because John's so limited offensively and doesn't have to be guarded away from the basket, and Reggie needs to be down there.

As much as I cringed when DJ took some of those shots late, he shouldn't get the finger pointed at him. Sorry. He had a season-high 26 points and made plenty of big shots to keep us in it. He's one of the top players in school history and needs to be given the green light. We'd all be singing his praises if he made maybe one more 3 in the last couple minutes of regulation.

Back to the issue: I can't believe how ineffective Ivo and Nick have become. Nick at least is still hustling and not making a ton of poor decisions; he just can't hit water from a boat. Ivo, though... wow. He just looks lost. Hard to even say if JC deserves blame; he's not the one throwing the ball to the wrong team.

I'm less upset about the loss tonight than I was about the train wreck at Belmont. The team had energy tonight, and Akron played smart and tough.

I'm not willing to "settle" for being MAC runner-up, but I think we can all agree that as long as the boys beat WMU in the MAC semis, the whole season is moot except for title night against Akron. Might be more fun to beat them only once but have it be the time it really counts. And let Akron get screwed by the selection committee (especially if they drop a late conference game here); don't say it can't happen.

Regroup and take care of business the next 11 days. Bring Ivo back from the abyss, have Nick work on his shot, and let's go win the tournament.

Good thing Christian is a big game coach.

Can't blame all those loses on the players, they've proved they can win big games when put in a position and mindset to succeed by the coaching staff.

To beat Akron in the MACC we need production from Nick and Ivo. Especially Nick.

I thought the same thing right when the game ended. I really, really, really hope it doesn't happen. But good Lord, this is the same league that voted Michael Bramos POY.

That was great game.  The MAC needs more games like that.

Akron by far has the better front court.  By far.  Zeke and Treadwell have improved a lot.  A lot.  Those two are simply better than Keely/Smith/Baltic.  And that freshman drilling threes is a big difference make.  That kid is killer.  You can't just compare things to last year because Akron has improved.

Jim Christian is going to be around for a long, long time.  Ohio is 20-8 and 11-2 in the MAC.  And, odds are will finish 23-8 and 14-2 in the MAC.  Bashing Christian is just lacks credibility.  It is the type of stuff that deserves eye rolls.  Good grief.

Some shots fall, and we take care of the ball a bit better and we can beat Akron in Cleveland.  Just like Groce's clubs did.

Go Ohio !

So you'd rather have Travis turning it over? I thought the same thing you did because Travis kept us in it, but if he can't keep the ball on our side of the floor, at some point you have to get him out.

Nick at least pulls another defender away from the basket because of his shooting ability. He's just been off lately and I think it starts on the defensive end. He's getting in foul trouble and that's shooting his confidence down big time. This team will need him next year. JC can't lose a 40+% shooter from 3pt range and he knows it.

This Akron team is better than last year's. Even without Diggs and Cvetinovic. They've proved that already.

It's always frustrating/disappointing to watch a senior with an overall solid career struggle like he has.  Maybe there are things going on outside of basketball but I really want Ivo to play like a senior whose games are numbered and make them count.

It's easy to forget these guys are people just like us and not chess pieces, especially when they let us down.

I'm not a JC basher, but he needs to draw up more plays to get Kellogg involved. We need Kellogg.

Also, I'd like more mins from Ivo. He's our best defensive rebounder.

Bobcats are a good team, not a great team. Akron has more material by more I mean deeper. Dambrot  is a very good coach. He will be at Akron until he retires. JC needs to get his players into the program..

He needs rebounders and defenders something the Bobcats don't have.  Hopefully the help will come next season, I don't  think he has forgotten how to coach.  At least I hope so. Sometimes coaches get burnt out like Danny Nee.
