If BVP were healthy, I wonder if Boals would be there to cheer these two on if they faced in the tournament? That seems like a move Boals would make, though decked out in OHIO gear.
I would be shocked if he came out to support Sears in any way.

My guess is that Boals and Sears probably have had zero communication since he officially left town. Just a hunch...but who knows.

You all may be right, and Boals has cut Sears off.

But if that's the case, it's a mistake and shortsighted and Boals better adapt to the new world of college basketball soon.

Our program took a lightly recruited kid, turned him into a first team all MAC player in with an NCAA tournament win under his belt, and now he's the second leading scorer on the #1 team in the country going into the tournament. His name also pops up here and there in NBA mock drafts.

We should be emphasizing the connection between our program and players like that. It should be something we tout recruiting, and Boals should be tweeting at Sears when he has a good game.

What purpose does resentment serve in doing his job well?

I wouldn't be surprised even with BVP on the bench.
Oh yeah, get that photo, Coach. Post it far and wide.
It's never about the MONEY! But I'm sure it was a factor in both of these two players leaving with a chance to play deep into the BIG Dance.

Do we have any real indication that Boals might be upset at all with Sears? I know he upset some posters here because he left abruptly without issuing any thanks or goodbyes. Is that all that has gotten some of you stirred up about him leaving? He was 20 years old and had an opportunity to start for one of the best teams in the country near where he grew up.

Not so sure about that. I mean...I get it...it's a catch 22. You want people to come here and see examples of Sears and BVP I guess moving onto bigger and better and that it's possible for the player you are currently recruiting to do the same. But how much do you promote that? I mean I can't imagine Boals telling AJB and Elmore during recruiting trips...come here for a year or two and then it's off to Ohio State, Florida. Alabama...etc.

Nobody is saying Boals has resentment towards Sears we don't know. But Boals has a ton of things to worry about during the season and tweeting out good game to Sears and BVP shouldn't be on his priority list. Now with the Bobcats season over with....ok...then maybe I can see it. But we can't recruit guys and part of our pitch be we are the minor leagues to the big time programs. If anything, Boals should be tweeting every day about Jason Preston making it to the NBA and not hyping up players on other college teams who are no longer Bobcats.

The indication was very easy to see. If you watched the last ten games or so of that amazing season, you could see that there were two teams out there -- Sears and Ohio. There was a disconnect. Sears had checked out about a month before the season ended, in my opinion. The team that was 22-3 was not the same team that finished 3-6. But like I said, just my opinion.

Sure felt like Sears knew last January he had one foot out the door. Not sure why people get bent out of shape with the people on this board who feel he could have handled the situation of his departure better. Just because he wore the green and white for a few years doesn't mean you have to cheer him on at Alabama.

Agreed. I couldn't care less what a player does after he leaves here. But I know others feel differently.

I agree with both of these sentiments. I kind of made an exception for BVP, since he paid his dues here and was basically on his 85th graduate year when he transferred to Virginia where the head coach was his godfather.

The message isn't "we're the minor leagues for big programs." It's that good basketball players play basketball at Ohio, and we're a "family" program that supports our players as people even when their decisions don't necessarily align with what's best for Ohio basketball. Once a Bobcat, always a Bobcat and all that.

To be as good at basketball as Mark Sears or Elmore James, you have to be extremely competitive. The new reality is that players who don't get a major program offer are now going to recognize that the door isn't shut just because they've signed with a non-major program. Who do you think they'd rather play for? A coach that's seen to have their long term best interest in mind and isn't going to write them off if they choose another path, or one who only cares about them in as much as they help him win basketball games?

We can ignore the reality of the transfer portal if we want, but I don't think it helps to do so.

This doesn't appear to be accurate. I don't think that you couldn't care less about what they're doing. If that was the case, would you post 15 times in a thread named after these two athletes? You've clicked on this thread and responded that many times, which would suggest some level of care. It might not be positive, but it's not indifference.

Just making conversation so to speak. I look at all the subjects on this forum and comment on some and not others. I didn't even know BVP was hurt until reading it here.

OK, OK, I have a passing interest in the subject, but I don't think much about except when I'm looking at this thread. I have watch parts of two Alabama games in the last week or so, and part of one UVA game this year. Some on here, though, seem to follow every move of Sears and BVP and watch nearly every game they can. I don't. I have a passing interest, but in general I don't really care too much about their future endeavors. I don't believe, "Once a Bobcat, Always a Bobcat."
May I present you with the case of one Jason Grunkemeyer?

Grunk is so very different. He wasn’t anything special for OHIO and was nothing to follow, similar to Sam Towns. He averaged 3 ppg for us, or something similar. He wore an OHIO jersey but wasn’t someone we followed. He went in-conference and, but for one shot, would be forgotten to history. BVP and Sears helped us win in NCAAs and were part of one of longest winning streaks in school history. I’ll continue to follow them both and wish them well. They were remarkable ambassadors while wearing the OHIO jersey. Both of my children got to spend time with each of them and they were nothing but gracious.

Different strokes for different folks. Just saying that some people forfeit their Bobcat credentials in my mind. [I'm glad that your kids had that experience.]
