Still find it interesting that the moderators let the allegations/character questioning that appears in this thread go without censoring or warning.  Double standard.

Melt down mode. It's really quite interesting to watch.

Can you point to the specific allegations to which you are referring?

Read the thread.  Even a quick perusal will show it.

I don't think allegations are being discussed on this thread.  It's a fact.  Jon Smith quit, for whatever reason.

Here are the applicable posting rules:
  • Factually false posts, particularly of a personal nature with regards to players and coaches.
  • Any rumor spreading, however implicit, regarding legal isssues (where charges have not been filed) or personal lives of athletes or coaches.

I haven't seen anything factually false in this thread, especially of a personal nature with regards to Jon.  I haven't seen any rumor spreading regarding legal issues.  I haven't seen any rumor spreading regarding Jon's personal life.  I did see a couple of posts alleging that they had detected a decline in his play over the past few games and tried to possibly link that to signs that he would quit, but that's not regarding his personal life...that's regarding his play on the court.

I did. Several times. I can't find any allegations. I'm asking you what allegations you've specifically seen and/or are offended by so I can better understand your POV.

And who said he 'was full of himself'? Some of you that want to tear a kid down must have rather unhappy and sad lives IMO. He made a decision ... he's an adult. Respect it .. move on. Or grow up.

I'm being pedantic, but in consecutive sentences, you called him a kid and an adult. Which is it?

"Pedantic" - good stuff. And "Brief".

Just read the first page, the insinuations regarding character.  There are at least half a dozen.

You don't no the reasons. nobody does. We can't judge him like we're. Maybe instead of looking at it as a walk out we need to look at it like a sort of Barry Sanders move. He was ready to go. Why can't we accept that? Did people ever accuse Barry of walking out of his team? The situations aren't that different. Both were in there prime both could've kept playing but both were ready to be done. Grant it the season is still going on with JS but come on. Its the CIT we're playing mostly freshman. Who can blame him. Maybe he needs to catch up on some classes. WE DONT KNOW.

I re-read the first page for the fifth time. I still do not see any insinuations on character nor do I see any allegations that you keep referring to (unless a one-word post of "chump" is now off-limits). In fact, I think the posters in this thread for the most part have provided pretty fair responses that have not crossed any lines.

Trust me when I say that this is an issue I am very sensitive about, so I genuinely appreciate the concern. I think the mods do a good job of making sure things don't cross a line.

Do you think the poster who called JS a "chump" would say that to his face? Just as I'm sure the guy I replied to .. who  said we "saved him being a scrub at St. Louis" would say that to him. Those are cheap shots by alums who likely never played Division I sports. JS was on campus 4 years. He red shirted and gave us 3 good solid years and rather than criticize him, like many here, I thank him for how hard he played and that he got as much out of his ability as he possibly could.

No. My general rule is that I wouldn't post anything that I wouldn't tell someone in person. I think what sets this fan message board apart from all others is that most of the regular posters here respect that philosophy.

Other message boards can quickly turn into train wrecks, which is not unlike my commute this week:

I don't envy you the job of determining which posts are appropriate, and which violate the rules. I do agree with Monroe that some posts make insinuations about motives, but I don't see a rule against that, given that they aren't insinuating that any laws were broken. I don't see any posts that do break the rules you cited.

I agree with those that say the best policy is to not post anything that you wouldn't say in person. I try to use that rule as well.

Go Bobcats.

We are too soft on this board. Smith deserves criticism, he left his teammates hanging. We can't talk critically about anybody but Tim Oshea who left us hanging too. We are somewhat communist, we try to control the media.

TOS has gotten a bad rap on here, probably because Ohio wasn't a dream location for him, but he did not leave us hanging.  IMHO I've always thought he deserved more respect on here than he's received.

If I saw Jon Smith in person I would thank him for 4 years as a Bobcat and wish him well on his future endeavers. I was a student athlete and I remember what a commitment it was. I would ask him if he was on track to graduate and encourage him to work toward finishing his degree.
.
I don't know why he left the program but people do make mistakes. Once a Bobcat, always a Bobcat!  After watching many of these kids for 4 years I feel like they are like family.. I am willing to look at the total body of work instead of one week of his career. Good Luck Jon !

For the record, I responded to Stunter in a pm.  He asked a fair question and deserved a response.  I think that I gave him a pretty balanced, fair response.  But am quite sure that I'd draw the usual heat for it here, so will not put here what I wrote to him.

Is this an example of the "integrity" you're harping on in other threads?  Signed SBH, A/K/A Drew Shippy, Class of 1983.

Yes, it is.  (One of my beefs is people, such as Drew Shippy, not responding to what I write.  I didn't want to appear to be pot/kettle on that.)

Rejoice.  I'm pretty much done here shortly.  You and your ilk are so welcoming to those with whom you disagree.  You win.  This place is gonna be pretty boring (see football threads) when everyone has the 'right' opinion.

Let's get to it.  What is it with you, Shippy?  Please state the reason for your attitude toward me.  I've no problem with your meeting what I write and disagreeing.  That's not what you do though.  What causes the personal animosity?  What causes you to pretty much ignore what I actually write and to go into slam land so consistently when I post?

Do you ever re-read your old posts?  You attack, attack, attack people and then pull your hand back in absolute horror when someone responds.  A couple of nights ago, you began a post with "I piss on…" when responding to another board member.  Half the time you start inane threads that I can only assume are alcohol or drug induced.  And when criticized, you allude to a prominent former board participant who allegedly agrees that the level of discourse has eroded.   Here's a tip, Monroe, quit sniffing his glue.  From my perspective, your seeming need for attention (example: continually responding to your own posts when no one else does) is alarming and really takes the fun out of this forum.

JS was on the 1 hour of class a week regiment.  Many football players also use this when they have already graduated and are just hanging around to play the fall season.  I would be interested to see how this plays into the budget.  I'm guessing the cost is still for a full scholly, but in reality it is costing OU a small portion of what it could.

It would make more sense to use the free tuition to work towards a masters degree, but that may not be the goal for him.

Anyone have a sense as to whether Jon wants to play professionally in Europe or elsewhere?
