Overheard a WBB player say that Smith's knees hurt so bad that he could barely get up in the morning. It seems he was physically beat up. And based on his frame, it's not hard to believe.

Still, quitting and giving up on your team in the postseason is selfish and not what we do.

Yah, I don't buy this. If he's hurt he should sit on the bench in a suit next to Ricardo. Not pack up and leave school.

As much as I have cringed whenever TJ takes a jumper over the past two months, you don't see TJ giving up. And TJ's injuries have to be worse than whatever Jon has been dealing with.

I don't want to throw Jon under the bus without all the facts, but if it hurts that bad, tell the coach you're hurting but will gladly show up and give what you can. Ric has been busting his tail without even being able to play...

We have NO 3-point specialist playing, much less "starring" in Europe. Not sure who you mean?

Stilll looking to boot the White Truck are ya?
Absolutely no clue what you are speaking of, nor why you are coming at me. Maybe I missed something, but what 3pt specialist do we have playing or starring in Europe?

If Jon was burned out and didn't want to compete anymore and thought it was time for the season to be over, I can understand. If Jon had thought he served his time and wanted to be a normal college student for the rest of the semester....I totally understand.  These guys miss out on a good portion of college because they put it all on the line to showcase our school.  Could be similar to what some people say happened to TT.  Sometimes you just get a little burned out and want to start enjoying life and Athens.  It is easy for us to sit back here and judge since we have never been in their shoes....playing at OU back in the day isn't as demanding as it is now.

I do think it is bush league that he gave up on his teammates.  That is very selfish, and i fear this one action could tarnish a great reputation.

I think we forget how complex the world is for a student athlete.  We think that just cause they get a scholarship, they have it made.  Grades, Athletics, Social Life, ETC....that is a ton to have on your plate....pile on the pressure of having throusands of people counting on you.  I'm sure someone will post how they were a double major engineer and accounting major who worked 30 hours a week at Wendys.  If you fit that mold...congrats, you are a truly a hard worker.  Most of us find it easy to judge this guy and sit back and think that we would be different in his shoes.  Taking 18 hours as a communication major and getting a 3.3 GPA is about as easy as counting to 10....

He didn't leave school.  That is what JC said pre-game.

When BREAKING NEWS happens on the big tv networks someone on every station says, 'We don't want to speculate...but..." Then they speculate even though they have very few details. Congratulations to the players and staff that won the basketball game played tonight.

I'm pasting what OUBobcat9092 posted in another thread about all-time blocks:

So far this season Jon has passed Gary Trent, Reggie Keely, "Big" John Rhodes and Leon Williams to move to #4.  Jon is now at #18 all-time in the MAC.

Wow.

Tough to know what to think. A kid who didn't care wouldn't have worked as hard as he did to improve his game as much as he did since he joined the program.  He hit the boards, kept plays alive, became a decent foul shooter and developed a jump shot. He probably is hurting, but I'm sure everyone else on the team is too. Russ said during the game that Walter Offutt texted a lot of the guys to tell them to take advantage of this opportunity even though they didn't reach the goal they wanted. It's too bad it ended this way for Jon.

Jon Smith has seen a lot of change since he came to Ohio, new coaching staff and new teammates.  He knows the feeling of winning at a high level and is probably disappointed with his senior year for many reasons.  Let it be.  These post season games will benefit the underclassmen significantly.   Let us look to the future.  Thank you Jon for the memories.

Find the Walt texts interesting....he flat out didn't want to head to Denver last year and was invisible during that game.

Jon Smith has to answer to his teammates thats it. No one on this board. His legacy is solid in my book he didn't go out there and pretend he was hurt, going thru the motions he let his coach know that he was finished with basketball after the last game. Is the CIT really much more than a minor invitational scrimmage? WIth his degree possibly secure which is supposedly your number 1 priority is it really THAT bad. Hmmmm

Quality comment, I will agree only person or people he answers too are himself and his teammates. And here is hoping he has or is on track for that degree!

you don't think his now former teammates think it was a chump move? right.

His success and efforts on the court in the past, whether he gets a degree or not
and him walking out on his teammates are all completely seperate subjects. Whether he
was a good player has no relevance to him walking just as whether he gets a degree has no relevance
to him quiting his teammates.

I was a huge fan of him as well when he played. As a fan I have little respect for him walking
out and if I were his teammate I would have less. I don't wish him harm or bad fortune. But the act of walking
on your teammates is a chump move.  Glad the team responded by moving on and competing. I don't know JS
but in an honest moment in the future he will likely come to realize it was a chump move.

Good luck Jon Smith.

Quality comment.

Who are any of us to decide if the CIT is a "real" tourney or scrimmage?  We are in it - we play.  Would folks feel the same way if TT or Beau had said, "coach, I only play in the Detroit bowl."  Find another starter.  I'm done."

I've been involved in college athletics for over 20 years and never heard of a student-athlete quitting the team prior to the postseason.

I cannot think of an excuse for walking out on everyone. If he was hurt, he could've sat the bench. If he had a personal issue, he could've sat on the bench.

There's the door, Jon, and don't let it hit you in the @##

The one thing I'll praise Jon for is not sticking around and just going through the motions.  One player not giving his all can turn into a cancer that spreads.  Glad he wasn't around for practices or the game.

That said, I'd really like to hear from Jon as to why he felt it best to leave his teammates.

He quit the team after he was disciplined. As far as I know, this isn't quite the same thing.

You may like the guy, but he quit on the Cats. I wish him well, but I am in the Jon ? club. There is no excuse to go awol. Ohio University deserves better. He would be getting roasted if he did this anywhere else. Like I said I wish him well, but forget him at the same time.

Yeah, wasn't he suspended by Groce for academics/team violations? Not really the same as this case.

We've had some winners over the years (Whitehead, Stevie Fresh, Goard etc.)

Agree 100%.

Just makes me feel like it didn't take Walt long to regret his IMO selfish decision(openness about postseason). Hope Jon is OK with his decision and still looks upon his time at Ohio fondly as he gets older. Time won't heal all wounds but it will for most. This too shall pass I'm guessing.

PS I'm sure glad all of my decisions during my time as a student weren't publicly available.
