Well, since he is gone, I'll say that it may have been better if he hadn't made the trip to Cleveland as now in hindsight he likely  checked out a game or two ago.

Against Akron, numerous turnovers and a near over n back that would have made a seventh grader blush gives some evidence that his head was no longer in the game..

If he couldn't stomach playing anymore he did the boys who want to play a favor.

I'll remember his throw downs and swats.  Best wishes to you JS

LOL at some of these comments. I know several members of the staff and players  including JS....JS is by far since Walter Offutt one of the most well liked and quiet/laid back players on the team. Not sure why he would finish like that but he is an adult and it is his choice to play or not. Good luck to him enjoyed every time I got the chance to talk to him. Def hurts the team on defense but its next man up anyway.

I'd take 10 Jon Smiths before I took 1 Alex Abreu.

I love this kid and I chalk it up to end of the season frustration. I don't think we had this game scheduled when he decided to hang it up. My opinion is that this tournament does more harm than good for our reputation.
I dislike this "losers
tournament " enough to find it hard to get angry with JS.
If we want guys to get more game experience after our season is over there has to be a better way. Some of these CBI games have match-ups of two teams that have lost a combined 30 games!!

I wonder how much per hour these kids actually make in comparison if you want to claim that their tuition is payment enough for the time they put in. Not Ohio but I've heard plenty other college athletes say "I'd rather work at Mcdonalds and get loans than go thru the NCAA again" and sometimes its guys that actually played and played well. They have virtually no free time and look at the regular students sometimes with more envy than people realize. I dont agree he should have quit like that but not knowing whats going on in that mans life who am I to say LOFL. If I quit my job you think I want people on a message board who never/never will pay ONE of my bills contemplating if I am a good person. GTFOH. Thanks Jon Smith for the 99.9 percent you gave Ohio basketball and the enjoyment of my eyeballs to see you jump around dunking and swatting the heck out of the ball. Plus he never got arrest.

This may actually help Ohio anyways because Campbell and Wadley will get good PT.

From what I am seeing no one is getting "good P.T."

name one school where you've said "that's a pretty good program" and someone has replied "you would think so, but as it turns out, they played in the CIT one year so they're actually not good. what a shame, they could have been something."

This may be the oddest post I have seen on this site.

I'd take one Alex Abreau over Jon Smith's empty locker

Any PT is good for Campbell and Wadley at this juncture. They are trying to build for the future and if I recall JS is a senior.

My point is if he had the choice Abreau would be playing whenever possible

Right because when Evansville came to Athens this year with a 5-1 record you were saying how awful they were because they made it to the CIT semifinals the year before. Is that what we're supposed to believe? c'mon.

For all those who want to throw Jon under the bus ...... Did you think that maybe he's burnt out? Maybe he put everything he had into the 34 games he played this year. Maybe he felt let down to not make the NCAA. Maybe he felt he'd not be his best. Maybe he felt he'd not carry his normal load. After all ... this is a game and there are bigger things in life. I was disappointed too but he's an adult who made a decision. He may be a guy who got as much out of his ability than anyone I can recall in quite a while .. just a hard nosed blue collar type player who I felt gave us 3 good years. Last, none of us know everything that went into his decision. there may be other factors of a personal or family nature.

Overheard a WBB player say that Smith's knees hurt so bad that he could barely get up in the morning. It seems he was physically beat up. And based on his frame, it's not hard to believe.

Still, quitting and giving up on your team in the postseason is selfish and not what we do.

Being a tall man myself (6'6") roughly the same build (210) and same age (20), I can tell you that having aching knees and a back is something you deal with if you play sports. I have a messed up knee, messed up shoulder, messed up wrists, a bad ankle, and have all that back and knee pain if I do a lot of physical work in one day.  If that's true it sucks but it's something you have to deal with a lot of the time when you're tall. I only play soccer seriously anymore and struggle to walk after a couple hours of slide tackles and collisions

That being said, the adrenaline takes over when it's time to play
