I have no doubt DJ's #5 jersey will one day hang in the rafters. My question is this: are there other past athletes that deserve to have their jerseys retired? I've heard the name Caroline Mast thrown around here before. Is B-Hunt worthy? Personally, I feel that Ellen Herman's jersey should be honored. In my time following Ohio sports, I've never witnessed a player more dominant than Ellen.

I don't want to hijack the thread, because this should be about an outstanding season and (in the words of Reghi) an incomparable career, but do we have any football jerseys retired? I'm wondering if #4 will be looking at that in a couple of years, hopefully after a third bowl victory for the school.

Big congrats to DJ.  He really earned it.  Have to think his pro ball stock just went up.

In Coop We Trust. DJ Cooper is the man and deserves his jersey to be retired.

Looking at that list, I still can't believe Leon Williams didn't get one.
not talking about that.  not bringing up that anger again. ... must stay calm

It really is amazing that Leon or Jerome never won it.  It's TOS's fault for not getting us a top 3 seed, EVER.

Considering he was a Cardinal at a mid-major that's pretty impressive

Or Brandon Hunter.

I think that's why I'm so happy about DJ winning ... I felt we had some very deserving players in the past who were overlooked, I was worried that DJ would be too.

So now the College of Cardinals can refocus on qualifying for the NCAA tourney.  Lunardi has them on the bubble.

By the way, the folks at Wikipedia are on the ball.  Nice to see that Ohio leads the pack in POYs.

I don't think so, but it would be nice to start a ring of honor (or wall of honor in our case). I would also like to see the tradition started of giving our best RB the #5 jersey, ala Michigan #1 WRs. Brinker and McRae started it, let's see who else can do great things with it.

Agree about Ellen. Not only her, but other Ohio Volleyball players need to be recognized as well for their decade of dominance.

As for basketball, I wouldn't mind seeing Hunter's jersey someday. Or at least someone else who eptimized what Ohio basketball was all about.

Congrats to DJ. Kid deserves it. I was positive he'd get jobbed, so I'm pleasantly surprised.

The fact that BHunt never won one is a travesty though at least both his Jr and Sr seasons the MAC PoY was won by a future NBA player (McLeod from BG and Kaman from CMU respectively).

He joins an illustrious list of MAC Player of the Year winners from Ohio's Men's Basketball program:

1995 - Gary Trent
1994 - Gary Trent
1993 - Gary Trent
1992 - Lewis Geter
1990 - Dave Jamerson
1989 - Snoopy Graham
1984 - John Devereaux
1974 - Walter Luckett
1971 - Ken Kowall

Our first PoY since Trent in '95. That's crazy it's been that long.

Also good lord at OU from 89-95. 6 MAC PoY awards in 7 seasons. LOL. It's no wonder that's the era I started following OU hoops and became a fan for life. Fond memories of Snoop and Jamerson back when I was little tyke.

Congrats to DJ ! I have always followed OHIO basketball, but my interest has been so much stronger since the Bobcats took down Georgetown three years ago! I hate to see the past 4 years come to an end. Take OUr team deep in the NCAA DJ, after winning the MACC this weekend!

Not much grief about the choice over on zipsnation - I was expecting a riot of anti DJ/pro Zeke reaction. I thought it would be a closer vote and concerned it would lean Zeke. One of the most "credible" POY selections by the MAC in a few years. Basketball is a team sport - and what separates DJ is that he is one of the best at making his Team better in MAC basketball history!
