Provided we're in, is there any chance we could host a first round game?

No. If we get in it will be as a 6 or 7 seed. No chance we get a 4 seed which would be required to host a first round game. And, again, we will not get an automatic bid. Our RPI of 67 puts us right on the bubble for an at-large, depending on how many auto bids there are. Do the math. There are 100 teams in the NCAA and NIT. There are about 20 teams that get in the NCAA with an auto bid that would not otherwise get in. That is why, in general, you need an RPI in the 40's to get an NCAA bid. Now assume there are about 10 teams that get auto bids to the NIT that otherwise wouldn't, get in. That means, in general, you need to be in the top 70 of the RPI to get an NIT bid, especially if you are a mid-major.

If Borna is correct and we make the NIT with Arkansas in Fayetteville, get ready for when the entire arena "calls the hogs".  The first time I witnessed this in person I laughed my a$$ off.  It is one thing to see some Arkansas farmer call the hogs, it is quite another to see a good looking cheerleader doing the same.  Call it culture shock.

Brings back memories of Spring Break 1964, when a young coed from Arkansas taught me and my buddies how to do the Sooie cheer on the beach at Ft. Lauderdale! We thought it very strange at the time, but she was cute so we were attentive students.

I came across the "Calling the Hogs" Wikipedia page (yes, this has it's own Wikipedia page), and laughed for several minutes when I read this:

"Razorback purists[who?] recommend the Woo should last eight seconds."

I'm kind of interested in meeting these "Calling the Hogs" purists are.  Apparently, so is Wikipedia!

I listened to the postgame show on the ride home this morning, Russ & Rob said we were ensured a NIT bid since Akron is going to the NCAA Tournament.  Didn't sound like a maybe, but a for sure thing.  They also thought OHIO would play game one on the road.

I sent a note to Russ this morning to confirm. He said that was his assumption.

Even if we aren't guaranteed a spot it's a near certainty.  Our RPI is strong enough, we did win our conference regular season championship, and we have a marquee player.  I just have real hard time believing they will leave us out.

We posted 0 wins against TOP 100 teams...0-7.
I'm not expecting NIT either.

Just another reason to get the hell out of this conference!

Are you kidding me,only Akron with an Auto bid goes to one of the two older/better tourneys.  There is something seriously wrong if a team with a mid 70s RPI and 14-2 league record does not get into the NIT.  Did yo notice all the crappy teams (I guess with auto bids since they were league champs and tourney losers) in the NIT.

Still, there is something seriously wrong if he MAC can't get one team in this tourney!

I think too many low-major #1 seeds lost.  This seemed to me to be a really bad year for that.  So there are not as many NIT spots.  Also, you know the NIT is going to take schools like Florida State over us even if the resumes and rankings are pretty similar.  A week ago I would have expected NIT with a loss to Akron but I don't think so now.

Related OT:  With all these middle of the pack teams knocking off low-major #1s there are some really bad teams in the NCAA.  Western Kentucky is going to be the highest regarded of the 6 #16s by far and they have a ranking that would ordinarily be about the 2nd or 3rd worst in the NCAA.  There might not be dominant #1s this year but I would be stunned if this were the year a #16 broke through.  They are just too bad as a group.  Just to show the difference the team we played in the bracket buster last year, UNC-Ashville, was a #16 last year.  That's the sort of #16 that would eventually pull an upset with 50 chances.  But if enough #4 seeds from the bottom 12 or so leagues win their tournament it waters down both the NCAA and then in turn the NIT.

Just wondering what part of "Conference Champion who does not make the NCAA tournament" is so hard to understand.  Jeesh..................we will see I guess.

Does not apply to co-champions. Conference tiebreakers used to determine conference tournament seeding apply. Only Akron was guaranteed anything.

Below is taken directly from the NIT Manual off the NCAA website

NCAA Manual wrote:expand_more

Procedures for Selecting At-Large Teams

1. Prior to selection weekend, each committee member will receive a ballot listing all

eligible Division I teams in alphabetical order. On the ballot, each committee member

shall identify not more than 32 teams that should be invited to the tournament based

upon their successful play to date. Each committee member will submit the ballot at a

predetermined time after arrival for selection weekend.

2. A member should not vote for a team that has earned automatic qualification to the

NCAA tournament, or is a conference’s regular season champion.

3. Any team receiving all but one of the eligible votes on the ballot shall be moved into the

tournament as an at-large selection.

4. The committee will form a "nomination board" consisting of an alphabetical listing of all

teams that:

a. Received more than one vote in the initial ballot but did not receive

enough votes on the ballot to the selection board, or

b. Did not receive more than one vote in the initial balloting, but

subsequently was recommended by more than one member prior to

closing initial nominations.

5. The process for creating the initial "nomination board" will be closed. However, once

closed, a team may be added to the nomination board only if it receives more than two

eligible votes. A team may be removed from the nomination board if it receives all but

two of the eligible votes. Verbal nominations are permitted.

Remaining Ballots

1. The committee will begin evaluating those teams on the nomination board.

2. Each committee member will submit a listing of the best eight teams from the

nomination board to be added to the field.

3. Those teams receiving the most votes will comprise a pool of eight teams for the next

ballot.

4. Committee members rank the eight teams on the ballot using a cross-country scoring

system (i.e., the best team is valued at one point).

5. The four teams receiving the fewest points shall be added to the at-large field. The

remaining four teams will be held for the next cross-country ballot.

6. Steps No. 2, 3, 4 and 5 will be repeated until all probable berths are filled.

NATIONAL INVITATION TOURNAMENT TEAM MANUAL

January 17, 2013 34

7. If a team fails to be included among the four teams receiving the fewest points (Step

No.5) for two consecutive ballots, it shall be returned to the nomination board.

8. A team may be removed from the at-large field by a vote of all but two of the eligible

voters. Such a team would be returned to the nomination board.

9. At any time during the process of selecting the teams, the committee may elect to begin

seeding the teams.

10. At any time during the process, the chair may suggest that the committee begin

considering teams that should be eliminated from the nomination board. The same

voting procedures will be used.

11. At any time during the process, the chair may call for a cross-country vote of the teams

remaining.

12. The chair has the option to revise from four to two the number of teams to be moved

into berths per Procedure No. 5

According to Joe Lunardi, these are the NIT automatic qualifiers:

NIT automatic qualifiers

• Charleston Southern/BIG SOUTH
• Long Beach State/BIG WEST
• Louisiana Tech/WAC
• Mercer/ATLANTIC SUN
• Middle Tennessee/SUN BELT*
• Niagara/MAAC
• Norfolk State/MEAC
• Northeastern/COLONIAL
• Robert Morris/NEC
• Stephen F. Austin/SOUTHLAND
• Stony Brook/AMERICA EAST
* if no NCAA at-large bid

http://insider.espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/9061920/bracketology-latest-s-curve-updates-selection-sunday-college-basketball

I'm pretty sure as others have said on this board that only one team per conference gets an automatic spot. Co-champions like Ohio don't. But I do think the Bobcats are likely to get into the NIT, but it's not a certainty.

Who said we weren't a "Bubble Team?"--well, it's the NIT Bubble but at least we get to play along and pretend like we are a real part of today's excitement.

Gumbel called Akron the "first team out of the MAC" on the selection show. Don't tease me like that, Greg.

Exposure wise, playing at Kentucky in round 1 NIT would be as good as making the tournament.

I will never forget being a student and watching us play in 1986 at the Convo against Ohio State (Danny Nee and Eldon Miller's last season) The atmosphere was electric. We had the Buckeyes on the ropes. It was also the same year that women made a run and we had two tournaments games at the Convo in a matter of days. If we could play a UK or a Xavier that would help to bring Ohio fans to the game, since it would be a reasonable road trip.

I was at that game as well.  65-62 Ohio State.  We did have them on the ropes.  Ohio State went on to win the NIT that year.  The Convo was rocking!  I remember seeing the banner at St John's back in 2008 when Ohio played Ohio State in football.

The Ohio women played the Illini.  It was pretty kool as well.  Great time to be a basketball fan in Athens in that era.  A lot of winning was going on.

For non-Twitter folks, The Ohio Men's basketball Twitter just said to watch the NIT selection show at 9. I have to believe they know something by now. I think it means we're in.
