Huh? TJ, Ric, ST,  Nick and Jon are still in the cupboard and arguably what this team will see as it;s leaders. ALl have been to the dance. Nice part is that every one of those kids can transition to a new system and role fairly easy with their skill sets and motivations. Probably more versatile and utility oriented than the players leaving this year.

Jon is the most limited but also has the summer to upgrade shooting and making plays off the dribble (that is intentionally singular). . The rest are guys who are athletic and can play and guard a couple of positions....whether it is an uptempo or half court offense.

I am interested also in how the summer gets treated by this coach. TOS always brought guys in early and then sent them home for a month before sept. JG had them up basically all summer . Time of building, conditioning and teaching. These young bigs are gonna need a solid summer experience to make the jump.

And how fast do you have to play to put up 112 with no 3 ball?

Akron remains winless in the NCAA, and now sets a record for the worst MAC loss ever. There's no way to spin that other than bad. OHIO must make sure that this doesn't happen again next year by winning the MAC Tournament! Go Bobcats!

I get a kick out of those who question why we didn't play Akron as VCU is tonight.  That is their system.  Smart recruits certain athletes specifically to play that way.  To think that any team could just turn that on, and do it anyway as well as VCU for just one specific game, is delusional.  The rotations, traps, and all their variations take a great deal of time to develop so that you aren't giving up easy ones at the other end.  DJ never would have been able to play the necessary minutes.  Reggie, in the back, never would have been able to cover the ground needed.  TJ would have fouled even more, though that is hard to imagine.

You are spot on about the "VCU System" and recruiting for the system. The VCU team conducts Navy Seal trainning during the offseason to meet the physical and mental demands of their system.

VCU is now ready to break ground on a new 10 million dollar practice facility.  The entire VCU campus has had a massive amout of growth and renovation since I moved to Richmond in 1988.  Much of this was during the time period when President McDavis was the provost and Dr. Eugene Trani was the president of the University.

I do not expect to see Smart leave VCU anytime soon.  Both Jeff Capel fired from Oklahoma and Anthony Grant (Alabama) have not fared well after leaving VCU.  Both have lost at VCU when they returned with their new team.  Richmond and Greater Richmond has a lot to offer in terms of recruiting and being a nice place to raise your children.  Within 90 miles of Washington DC, Virginia Beach / Outer Banks and the Blueridge mountains.  The Smarts have a new Baby and his wife is a very talented person and had two big wins last night with her alma mater Harvard winning. She also has a degree from Northwestern.

VCU didn't exactly seem to suffer not running a 6-man rotation.

Thought that EXACT thought the entire MAC Championship Game and thinking about it here tonight---

why didn't we hit Akron with a full-game, full court press?  If anything, I thought we pressured the ball even less than usual in the MACC Game.  We may not have the athletes VCU has, but you stick Ricardo, Smith, DJ, Walt, Stevie on these guys it may have done exactly what's happening here.  Pace is too fast and their bigs aren't getting the ball consistently and when they do, they play rushed.

We settled back, let them play at their pace, let them pound the ball down our throats and really let them play to their obvious strength.

I think there's something to be said for "play to your strengths, not to your opponents weaknesses." We are not a pressing team, we haven't been all year.  So press the whole MAC title game?  That's like telling a football team with the best passing offense in the league that you need to run the ball the whole game against an opponent because they struggle to stop it.  Don't get away from who and what you are when it got you all the way to the finals of the MAC tourney.

As for Akron...way to go, boys.  All respect we earned for the MAC in the NCAA tourney the last three years was out the window after 25 minutes of that debacle last night.  #ThinkBigger, as in biggest 12 seed loss to a 5 seed in the history of the tournament.

GraffZ06 and Borna--you're right on target.  For as smart and fundamentally sound as Nick appears, he and Reggie were most often burnt on D vs. Denver.  And yes, Nick had multiple career highs placed on him.  I credit Nick for attempting to add another dimension to his game this year by putting the ball on the floor more, but in a game such as VCU (more athletic teams) he's just not going to get it done.  And this is coming from a guy who will tell you Nick is their favorite Bobcat--me!

I really think OHIO needs a more athletic, versatile #2 SG with Nick/Travis as the designated zone busters--especially if we don't develop an inside game that requires teams to sag/help.  This year we were a perimeter team and when teams started to guard the 3 point line consistently, that pretty much took Nick out of the game.

Unless WInfield develops into this type of player (and I've never seen him play a minute) I don't see anyone on the current roster who's going to step into being an effective scorer/slasher/distributor like we'd like to have at the #2 position.

Wingfield is that type of player. He's an athletic guard who can handle the ball and play D.

This is exactly what I mean:

Wingfield...

Signed with Ohio . Offers from Ohio, St. Bonaventure, Ball St., Kent St., Akron, Toledo, BG, Stony Brook and St. Francis.

He is typical of the guy everyone in the MAC is after.  I don't see any Big 10 or Big East offers.  I guess the Bonnies would be his "top" offer??

Also noted that for the year VCU goes 8 deep (over 10 minutes).

Wingfield is hindered by the system he plays in. They run three small guards, Wingfield as a point-forward type player and then the big man Johnson down low. Could be a reason why he wasn't noticed earlier. But as others have said, he would have gotten a lot of late interest if he hadn't signed with us.

I hate Akron's mismatched shoes.

Among other things.

Rafferty called them Crossing Guard Shoes. I loved that.

Referred to Gilliam's shoes as "highlighter shoes".  And points were made about how Treadwell wasn't allow to wear mismatched socks and/or shoes.

Dear NCAA:

Your rules permit attention-grabbing mismatched neon yellow shoes, but disallow attention-grabbing Wizard of Oz socks. This is why we hate you.

Sincerely,

My understanding is we signed him before the bigger schools got to offering him. People will correct me if I'm wrong.

That's right according to this article from cincinnati.com: cincinnati.com/blogs/recruiting/2013/03/20/d-j-wingfields-court-vision-brings-added-dimension-to-walnut-hills-basketball-team/

"Wingfield signed with Ohio University last fall and Hill said there had been talk that if Wingfield waited he could’ve been a high major college commitment this spring. He had over 20 offers at the time of his verbal commitment last week."

As for N'Dour, he was offered from Cincinnati, St. Johns, and Providence with interest from Pitt as well.

The jury is always out on recruits. Stevie Taylor may have been seen as a "stud" from his offers...but so far there's been little to back up the hype.

Just give me some guys with heart who can play. The ratings don't mean much.

I do agree with your overall point, but I do have to say that it has been tough for Stevie to show much of anything while backing up DJ and only getting spot minutes.  I actually thought he was a spark off the bench against Denver, but was only played for 6 minutes the entire game.

The NCAA is pretty much a stickler about that. I remember buying Tommy 2 dozen pairs of the under armour socks he likes and having him sent back to the locker room pregame to change because they had logos on both sides. At the time a sock could only have one logo on it.

Agreed.  We are in now way being left with a bare cupboard.  Are we losing a great senior class?  Yes.  But we have 5 guys that have been on campus for at least 3 years coming back.  We also have Green (4th year in college) and Stetty(3rd year in college).  Wilkins will be a senior as well.  We will have some growing pains as player figure out their new roles but we have enough experience that someone will step up.

I wouldn't root for a MAC team to lose in the tourney since it sorta reflects on us....but if it had to happen, it happened (and, man, did it happen!) to the right team.

Last night's loss doesn't diminish us.  We are OHIO.

Kudos to borna for using 'assiduously.'  I doubt you get that kinda good stuff on other boards.

Athletes is athletes.  We should've been able to bring some pressure on 'kron even though that's not our normal style.  Guys like Stevie, DJ, TJ, Ricardo, Ivo, Smitty, Walt, etc--we coulda done some.

Are we eligible for a pre-season overseas trip this year?  Can't teams do that something like once every four years.  That would be a big help for next year with a lot of our minutes played not returning next year.

You guys are right on second thought, it's not a bare cupboard.  I failed to consider how these supporting cast members might do when provided the opportunity to play greater roles, along with another off-season of growth.  STILL, I think when you lose as many points, minutes and leadership as we did, help from this incoming class is crucial.  I still consider Willis and Setty part of the incoming class since the casual fan has no idea what they bring to the table.  To be a contender for the MAC, we will obviously need a lot of current members to step it up in their new roles + some new guys filling some big shoes in a short amount of time as I don't think what we have coming back with out some significant help is going to be enough to get it done.
