I'm a Marquette fan going back to the Al McGuire days (remember OHIO transfer Ulice Payne as their irreplaceable sixth man in the 1977 national championship season? How did Al steal him from Jim Snider???), but they were the worst shooting three-point team in the tourney. A little luck goes a long way in the NCAAs.
It wasn't Snyder; Dale Bandy lost him along with a nice little PG called Larry Slappy. That was part of the significant slide under Bandy that wasn't fixed until Danny Nee came in.
So Snyder retires and assistant Dale Bandy takes over and Bandy lost them? Would the duo have stayed if Snyder had remained in the saddle? Lots of freshman leave after one year, placing their moving on to the shoulders of Bandy is a stretch. The program's direction under Bandy is on the mark though.
The thing about teams in the MAC is the depth issue. Scaggs and Joyce were really swell players but no big and no guards means failure. Looking at Miami, Buffalo and BG this season and you can see 2-3 guys on each that would have been fantastic with DJ and Reg. It is when five to 7 guys fall in line when the teams excell. That's why Kent and Akron have been towards the top and hopefully Ohio will reload as those teams have to keep Ohio near the top in years to come.
