This program is in absolute shambles. Plagued with injuries, lack of motivation (on players part), and no will to win games. Players played out of position for the majority of the season. Something else worth noting: Semeka could not hold on to a consistent coaching staff. All of the assistants were gone after last season (including the DOBO). There are several players who have not contributed and have sat the bench their entire careers (some with injuries, some not). Semeka is not a good coach, and that is very evident by now. I did not go to one home game this year... watching the online broadcast was enough for me. I would stop watching when they got down by double digits. Just painful to watch.
When you look at programs like Bowling Green, it's very easy to tell why they have won so many games in the past decade. They (along with Curt Miller at the helm) established a program rich in winning tradition. They have 10 consecutive 20+ win seasons, including this season. BG's run to the sweet 16 in 2007 was magical and a cinderella story for sure, but much kudos goes to the fantastic coaching ability of Curt Miller, his staff, and their ability to recruit high quality, well-rounded players to BG. While they are in the middle of the pack for the MAC this year, they still have had great success this season in a top-heavy MAC.
Schaus originally said in 2008 when Semeka was hired that they had hit a half-court shot at the buzzer with hiring her. Wonder what he is thinking now? Probably that she shouldn't have been hired in the first place. Let's be honest here, just because you played under Pat Summitt and won a few national championships while playing for her does NOT mean you will be a good coach. Some people are meant to be known for their playing ability and not for coaching - they do not always coincide with one another. I'd like to see Schaus bring in someone with a proven head coaching record. Randall came in with no head coaching experience. While everyone deserves their shot at their first head coaching gig, I feel they could have chosen someone better.
Now it's time to attempt to right the ship and hope a new coach will do a better job. Ohio is lucky to have Baldwin and Black this year as freshmen - they helped with a good amount of the scoring this year. The talent level of this team is defniitely lower than the other MAC teams - without a doubt. Until Ohio can bring in higher quality recruits, you can't count them in for coming even close to a winning season.
Sidenote: It appears that they have cleaned house with the entire coaching staff - the coaches part is now empty on the Bobcats website. Not surprising, just thought I'd mention it.
