If he wins ten games this year and is within two games of a .500 MAC record, I will purchase season tickets for as long as he is in Athens #markitdown

I will purchase season tickets if they make it to the Elite Eight. I will use those tickets personally if they make the Final Four.

Amazing that Ohio was able to hire away a coach from the Horizon, since schools with FCS football obviously spend so much more money on basketball than MAC schools.

I'm still waiting for anybody on the revenue thing? I'll just throw out the attendance for the final game of the year , at home, against Miami-363 people. How many we're actually there? How many were students, parents, etc. bad team or not, that is not many for a revenue sport.

I don't know the numbers but by revenue generating I mean one that charges money.  If you are talking about making a profit, we don't have one sport male or female that makes a profit.

OK, now I understand what you mean. Not being near campus, I had no idea what sports they charge admission to. What other sports charge admission? Being a self employed business person, I have no problem knowing that profit and revenue are not the same. I just think of having some kind of threshhold amount to be considered a revenue sport versus a non-revenue sport. My bad.

That 364 attendance figure sounds like one from EMU!

It was sort of funny, but when I pulled into the parking garage at the Denver/Ohio baskerball game last week , I asked the attendent how much it was. He said, oh you don't pay anything, hockey is our revenue sport, basketball isn't . It's funny how different people look at this topic.

2009-10 - 0-30 (they never lost by less than 10...Buffalo beat them by 54)

2010-11 (1st year) - 6-24
2011-12 (2nd year) - 10-20
2012-13 (3rd year) - 23-10 with a 1st round win in the NIT

Amazing turnaround, and with only 2-3 years of his own recruits.  Experience and success taking an awful program and making it relevant - Perfect hire...despite his male organs.

YSU had been awful for 10 years before him as well, 1999-2000 was their last above .500 year before last year. Half of those were sub-10 win seasons.

I don't know if the traditional use of "revenue sports" implies simply those that charge admission. I think most only use "revenue sports" to describe football and men's basketball.

Regardless, I'm sure the actual revenue generated from women's basketball at Ohio (or any school, save a few of the national powers) is exceeding minimal...

This discussion of what is/is not a revenue sport (and specifically whether or not women's basketball/volleyball generate net income) got me curious. I tried to look into it from work yesterday on a break, but I couldn't find any hard numbers on sport-by-sport expenditures and revenues. Anyone have any suggestions?

As an old curmudgeon I don't like it.  I think women should coach women's teams and the same for the other gender.  I know there are some very successful cases of men coaching women's teams, but I still prefer that teams have coaches that can totally share the locker room with their proteges.

Another old curmudgeon will share his dilemma.  I have the same concern about men coaching women, but for different reasons. If the gender thing was fair and even, I would have no problem with a man coaching a women’s team. But there are no women coaching men in NCAA Division 1 basketball, while the number of men coaching women continues to grow. Men can seek and find jobs coaching womens' teams  but the opposite is not going to happen in the foreseeable future.

Let me shift gears and congratulate Coach Boldon and wish him the best.  I will certainly continue to follow the team. His experience, past records and other things suggest a very good outcome here.   If he’s as successful as I think he might be, in 3+ years, OHIO could make a some noise in the MAC and perhaps beyond.  At that point we’d probably run up against some big boys and would likely lose him. But you never know.

Back to gender briefly.  My dilemma is would I have hired him if he was clearly the best available coach out there, putting my beliefs up against my competitive spirit. I guess even pondering the question indicates I wouldn't be  a good AD.

stub,  I understand where you are coming from, and I agree with those concerns as well.  Like you, I'll continue to root for the Ohio women's team.  I was just expressing my preference for hiring members of the female gender to coach women's teams.  I root for Ohio VB, so this is not a deal breaker with me, it's just a very strong preference for a number of reasons.  The ones that both of us mentioned being the major ones.

Ridiculous logic in my eyes. It may make perfect sense to you but it seems like the same forward thinking employed to keep civil rights at bay for many years.

Ball State limited their sports for years because they refused to even look at males to coach collegiate females. THe first group of women who grew up playing ball since 3rd grade ....just like the boys.....is currently making their mark.

I have always been a proponent of hiring the best coach for the job. I find the logic that you have to hire a black coach on a white coaching staff or that you have to hire a white coach on an all black staff equally as preposterous yet it is an unwritten rule in college ball. In my eyes you Hire the best coach. This is the same thing that leads to the CHicago Public League as a whole  laughing when Groce was hired , saying he does not relate to blacks and will never get their kids. Coaches are coaches and they should not have gender, color or any other barriers.

I would love to see a female coaching men;'s bball... to the point where I advanced Carolyn Peck as a liketly candidate a long time ago on  another message board. Listening to her talk hoops I am always taken aback. She knows the game better than most has a great command of motivation.

Bernadette Locke-Mattox was Pitino's assistant at UK from 90 to 94 before taking a head women's job. WOmen can coach men with no problem. But, once again....this is the first gen of women who came up playing the game. C.Vivian Stringer had older brothers that taught her the game from an early age and made her compete regardless of gender. As one of college hoops older gen of coaches she is still watching the girls who grew up playing for coaches who played the game mature and cut their teeth. If anyone here remembers what womens basketball looked like prior to the 90; s you will know what I am talking about.

I always thought Ball St AD Andrea Seger was sadly mistaken holding to her "no men" mantra while having Curt Miller hand her her ass on a yearly basis.

Amazing to me that there are still folks out there thinking this .......

Saying only men should coach men and only women should coach women is, I think most of us agree, sexist. But stub's point that women are not getting opportunities to break into coaching men is a very salient one. I would like to think we're close to that barrier being broken, but I'd be very surprised if we see one in the next decade. Are there even any women assistants in D-I?

If I misinterpreted what stub said, I apologize. But I only attributed one person's words in my post. If you're accusing me of twisting your words, I apologize for nothing. You did not even come close to saying something not blatantly sexist.

I noticed a woman on Eastern's bench during the MAC Tournament.  Looks like shes the Director of Basketball Operations though.
