Grantland.com is currently running a bracket where you can vote for the most hated players in College Basketball over the last 30 years.  (Laettner, Redick, Noah, Hansbrough, etc.)  This got me to thinking about the MAC players I disliked most (for one reason or another) over the same time period.  My MAC knowledge extends back just about 30 years, so I came up with 5 man squads (and coach) over 2 time periods.  1983--1998 and 1998--present.  I limited myself to no more than one player from each school per team.  As we all know, the list of disliked Akron, Kent and Miami players would be voluminous.  So here are my choices; I'm sure I've left out some of yours:

1983--1998                                                     1998--2013

1st Team:                                                        1st Team:                                                     Anyone Named Hipsher:
Paris McCurdy  BSU                                      Dru Joyce  Akron                                              Men
Landon Hackim  Miami                                 Michael Bramos Miami                                  Women
Shane Kline-Ruminski BGSU                     JR Van Hoose Marshall                                 Children
Dan Majerle  CMU  (loved him in NBA)      David Kool  WMU                                             Pets
Lorenzo Neely EMU                                       Nate Gerwig  KSU

Coach:  Ben Braun  EMU                              Coach:  Keith Dambrot

2nd Team:                                                       2nd Team:
Bonzi Wells  BSU                                           Romeo Travis  Akron
Devin Davis  Miami                                       Jason Grunkemeyer  Miami
Jay Larranaga  BGSU                                   Haminn Quaintance  KSU
Earl Boykins  EMU                                         Yassin Idbihi  Buffalo
Jim Havrilla  WMU                                         Chris Kaman  CMU

Coach:  Jim Larranaga                                Coach:  Stan Heath

Were the Hipsher clan given the lifetime achievement award and therefore deemed not eligible?

I am pretty sure an OHIO player or two would make that list if your poll wasn't biased ;)

Are you suggesting that Bubba, DJ, Jerome, Boals, Snoopy, Baron, etc. weren't loved by all MAC schools?

I'm guessing that D.J. would be at the head of the list.

I think Devin Davis has to be a first teamer, and other than being pretty good, Bonzi Wells and Earl Boykins weren't really hatable to my recollection.. I also don't know what Ben Braun ever did to you; Dick Hunsacker was a hatable twit. And crooked!

Leaving the Hipshers, including Grandma, off this list is simply unacceptable and can not be tolerated. Steve Hawkins is also a jerk.

Currently, Matt Kamieniecki from Ball State and Shayne Whittington from Western Michigan are pretty loathsome.

And that BGSU assistant coach.

I agree with Pete on pretty much all counts.

Also ... where's the car thief from OSU/Akron? Jamie Bosley. He belongs in there somewhere ... maybe in place of Earl Boykins.

I am surprised Bonzi is so high on theat list. He did not turn into a miscreant till he joined the Jail Blazers.

Paris was a pretty hard nosed player but not a bad guy by any means. I would have thought Palumbizio would have been in there from the stories I have heard from guys who played against him.

I saw a similar thread on a Big Tenfinity board and was amazed at the guys who were hated on there.

I have a hard time hating most players. Only ones I do not like are the ones who do not respect the game or play without respect for the opposition. Punching guys on screens, grabbing nuts on rebounds, all the little things that piss you off and degrade the game are what get me a bit lathered up.

Baron is a funny one. He probably pissed off more opposing players than most. Just sitting and listening to him tell stories I can't imagine playing against him but sure would love to play on the same team. Seems like he knows every ref and all their families names too.

Easy to dislike DJ for what he does if you are an opposing player but hard to really step back and look at what he brings to the game and really not like him as a player.

Missing the Hipshers is almost criminal!

Also, I'm sure DJ would be on a few lists himself if this were circulated around the league, but I still love him.

Amen. I totally forgot about him until I looked at the 2005 MAC Tournament box scores. I just knew there HAD to be someone from Kent State we hated. Sure enough, Gerwig was.

Nate Gerwig was most disliked POTY status. Also it seems like he was in Kent for about 12 years given all of his injuries, so he probably qualifies for multiple teams.

Based upon feedback, I have corrected my obvious oversight of not including the Hipsher family.  I have also replaced Trevor Huffman w/ Nate Gerwig.
Thanks for the feedback.

What about Dan Palombizio from Ball State......I recall him trash talking big time with Ron Harper after Harper was named player of the  year and then getting lit up by Harper in tourney game.

I can honestly say that I don't hate most of the players on your list and, in fact, I liked most of them.  It looks like you hate the guys that beat the Bobcats, which I can understand, but I don't feel that way.  Hate losing but have to respect the guys that played the game well. What you should do is change the category to "What the MAC is Missing" but include the same guys you have above (except Romeo Travis and Nate Gerwig).

Edit:  Throw Grunkemeyer into that group as well.

I'll second the motion to put Jamie "Rogaine" Bosley on the list...

Also, I couldn't stand Nate "Ginger" Schindewolf...both just happen to be from cr'Akron

From our side, I don't think people liked Esterkamp too much.

Maybe Paris was way different on court than he was in person.

Anyone remember Mike DiNunno from Northern Illinois? He and the O Zone did not get along. He only played there two years before transferring to EKU or else I suspect he would be higher on these lists.

I agree about Bosley.

Also, I don't care if you leave the Hipshers off. This whole list should be called the Hipsher Hall of Fame. It's like Cy Young never winning a Cy Young. Who cares. It's just gotta be named after them.
