Time to expand the Convo?

Seriously though, I can't wait to watch these guys steamroll through the MAC regular season in two years.

I haven't looked into it but I'd be dumbfounded if Christian pulled in this much talent at Kent, heck even TCU.

It seems like we finally have a coach interested in the long haul that can make the big-time recruits feel as lucky as pretty much all of us alums feel about attending OHIO.

I think Christian is pleased to finally be in a situation where his employer is putting him in a position to succeed. At Kent, yeah, there was a winning tradition and all, but how many recruits are excited about playing in the MAC Center? TCU, I would love to see their football budget lined side by side with their basketball budget. He had to know what was ahead of him with the move to the Big XII. He even said our exhibition crowd was bigger than most of the regular season crowds he had in Ft. Worth.

We had over 4,000 for our exhibition crowd. I can't wait to see our team for the 2014-2015 season.

The exciting part is we still have 4, count em FOUR, scholarships to give out for that season.  If even 2 of them end up being somewhat high profile, it will be an incredibly exciting group of newcomers.

It is hard for me to get upset about losing a great senior class when we are spending $1,000,000 more than anyone else in the MAC, have the largest arena in the MAC, the best fanbase in the MAC and are recruiting on an entire different level than the rest of the MAC.

Any team can be beat on any given day, but I fully expect domination of MAC men's hoops by Ohio the next couple years. There isn't one reason to think Christian cannot build something very special here. He has every resource imaginable.

Optimist...don't forget about Akron.  They seem to be doing a great job with their program in every phase, including recruiting.  I wouldn't say that Ohio is doing better than the Zips program.  The two programs are pretty even.  I think they will be running neck and neck with us the next several years.  And as defending champions, they are on top until we unseat them again.

I believe we are recruiting on a different level than Akron.  Two years from now, we will have 3 players on our roster who were top 100 recruits coming out of high school. How many will Akron have? Guys who had offers from Miami of Florida, Kansas, Cincinnati, Temple, Arizona, VCU...  That is not to say Akron is not recruiting well. They are recruiting on a different level than everyone else in the MAC

We are spending more than 1,000,000 more annually than Akron on basketball. It is of my personal opinion that the Convo is superior to the Jar.  We have how many NCAA tournament wins the last 5 years? Akron has zero in their program history.  I expect Akron to be near the top of the MAC every year in men's hoops the next 5 years, but I stand by my original post.

Akron's b-ball facility is going to be increasingly limiting for their program, IMO.  And it looks like the university is entering a phase of significant financial instability, so building a new bball arena is doubtful.  (Also, the university is bleeding cash from their football stadium, which was supposed to "pay for itself" through increased attendance, parking fees, etc.)

I've been saying for years that Akron's business model - huge construction projects, enroll lots of kids who aren't college material, then teach them with low-paid adjunct faculty rather than tenured professors - would come back to bite them.  Now that the state's funding model will be based in part on student success/graduation rates, Akron has been forced to raise admissions standards (or actually have standards).  As a result, their enrollment dropped 3 percent last year and is now projected to decline another 7 percent next year. Turning that around is going to be very difficult without eliminating admissions standards again.  They are so cash strapped that they have announced that all students have to pay for parking stickers, even if they don't drive cars to school.  They are imposing several other new fees that could cause students to go to Kent or elsewhere.  In addition, as the economy improves, fewer students are going to have to "stay home" to go to Akron.  The university is projecting large budget deficits, they've canceled scheduled raises for employees and their adjunct faculty have threatened to unionize and strike.  Good times at Akron U!

I'm not ready to declare Mission Accomplished when it comes to Ohio v Akron. I'm excited to have a couple of Rivals top 100 4 star players join the team in 2014 but that's a long time from now and a lot can change between now and then.

Let's not forget that Akron landed a 4 star top 100 recruit 4 years before we did so they are capable of doing it too. And  that 4 star recruit left after 4 years with career numbers of 9.2ppg and 5.3rebs so lets also remember that not all highly rated recruits live up to their rating.

Zips had some freshman this year that played very well against us and they have some more good prospects coming in this fall, we have some advantages but Akron isn't going to just fade away.

So, I think  it's safe to say we won't be complaining about rebounding margins around here anymore.

SBH, is this an actual strategy or business model employed by Akron?  Or is this just something they resorted to?  (How do you like the preposition on the end?)

Agreed.

Optimist, you make a good point about the fact that Ohio has 3 NCAA tourney wins compared to zero to Akron.  But overall, I really do believe the two programs are pretty even right now.

I believe it's best to be conservative in assessing the future.  Better to be conservative in your assessment and overachieve than to anticipate domination and be disappointed.

If I did this I'd need to change my username.

Hopefully Mr. Owens will sign on the dotted line come national signing day.  I think moving forward from this last class the signing of Adams and the verbal from Owens is a very positive step in moving forward.
