Interesting.  Not as crazy as some of the newer floor designs or as confusing/headache-causing as Oregon's, but interesting.

I like the look of it, but I'll have to say I agree with some of the naysaying reponses posted to the article.  Buffalo needs to consistently win on this court in order to get attention.

I think it would have been great to keep the state of Ohio outline on our court.

It's weird that the "New York" is the part that's stressed as opposed to Buffalo.

Who wouldn't want something like this at center court?

I meant the word New York, not the outline of the state of New York. It's odd that they chose to make the New York portion of State University of New York Buffalo large, rather than, you know, Buffalo.

I cannot wait for the MAC to be home to UMass, Ohio, New York State, Delaware and UConn.

UB is de-emphasizing the Buffalo part of their name and promoting the "New York" part more.

I dunno.  If you were to view the court from the opposite side, it looks a bit like a handgun with the hammer.  Violence is never the answer.  Never.

Emphasizing "New York" is the silliest thing ever. It's just like how Louisiana-Lafayette tries to be "Louisiana"...even though very few really call them that.

Buffalo cannot simply be NEW YORK. For one, there's lots of other schools (Stony Brook, Binghamton, Albany, etc.) in the SUNY system. And two, there already is a New York University.

What are they trying to do here??

And people around here (the city of Buffalo) are PISSED...well, the 3 people I know who have heard of it are PISSED, the other 99.9998% of the regional population hasn't heard anything about this, and won't find out about it until they go to a UB basketball game next year...

This is either genius or madness.

I'm not sure what emphasizing New York gets them.

This is exactly what Tom Boeh was trying to do when he began to insist on Ohio.

“As fans are watching our games in Alumni Arena, we want the message to serve as a reminder that UB is not just a great institution in the city of Buffalo, but it also ranks as the largest and most comprehensive public university in the state and the only Division I FBS program in the SUNY system. With an alumni base that reaches across New York, we felt it was time to capitalize on our status in the Empire State, similar to our peer AAU institutions that compete at the FBS level across the country.”

Bingo. Smart, smart, smart, in my opinion. They're the largest university in the SUNY system. Not to capitalize on that and brand yourself as such would be a horribly missed opportunity.

On a related note, I was talking to someone from  the business school at Rowan University (google it). We were talking about Rowan's new emphasis on branding themselves as the regional university of South Jersey. For example, the B school just produced shirts that say "We mean business in South Jersey." In my opinion it's genius. The area lacks higher education opportunities compared to the northern part of the state and the PA side of the river. Why not capitalize on being the only game in town and make a name for yourself by generating regional pride?

For anyone who hasn't seen Oregon's disaster:

Now, had they snuck in a sasquatch hiding in one corner, I might change my opinion on this.  As it stands, I hate it.

Maybe it's their way of saying they are sick of being the nail so watch out, they are now the hammer?  Or maybe that they are "gunnin'" for you?   We may lose on the court, but will always win in the parking lot?

And they are State University of New York (SUNY) Buffalo campus, not University of Buffalo.  The point is valid.  Their angle is the same as Boeh's.  How did UC - Berkley get to be Cal, when there are a half dozen others UC's, including UCLA?  My guess is they claimed it.

Dear Mr. Z,

We would like to contract  you to the sum of $1 million to re-record 'Empire State of Mind' in which you mention 1) UB, 2) Turner Battle and 3) how much you consider Buffalo to be integral to the state of New York (aka The Brooklyn of Western New York). We eagerly await your response.

Signed,

The State  University of New York
(which happens to be in Buffalo, which some have called the Brooklyn of Western New York)

P.S. We are willing to change our mascot to The Fighting Blue Ivy if this is any way helpful.

Notice they've also dumped the "at" from their name.  Instead of the "University at Buffalo," it's now "State University of New York Buffalo."  "At" was kind of confusing because everyone wanted to use "of."

This whole thing sort of goes along with what some of the bigger guys are doing.  Wisconsin is often referred to as "Wisconsin-Madison"; Texas goes by "Texas-Austin" sometimes.  Unless something extraordinary happens they're always going to be second banana to Syracuse for athletics, and the NYC area doesn't have a real D1 school -- Seton Hall and St. John's are after-thoughts unless they have a good year, and the other schools there are hit-and-miss -- so why not try to broaden their appeal.  They can't help it if their state is so oddly shaped (I always thought it looked like a TV picture tube).
