Huggins was talking about it a couple of years ago at one point. I doubt the offer is still on the table. My point with the scheduling is that I would be fine with playing NC State on the road for a pay day if it can get us a 1 for 1 with them in basketball. When I mean 1 for 1 schools in Peden Stadium I'm talking here schools like Wake Forest or Boston College. The Kansas series in 2016-17 picks up right where Marshall series leaves off, a road game in Lawrence followed by a home game in Athens. Are we also getting a road basketball game out of it? What value does a basketball series bring with Marshall outside of proximity? If we want the program to pull a Memphis and upgrade to 4 star recruits we have to be serious about scheduling. Whoa I didn't realize that. This means Rio will be playing against his old team in Kansas, right?

No, those are dates for the football team. A home-and-home with Kansas. There's also a home-and-home with Cincinnati for different years. Both were announced last summer, I believe.

I think it's at Cincy in 2016 and then in Athens in 2018 for that home-and-home

Wow, I hate to see the Marshall game dropped! But I have to imagine this was a genuine scheduling issue. My bet is the series will be resuming with the Bobcats heading on the road next season.

We need this series. I would argue that it's in the top 3 non-conference games we get in basketball these days, at least for the past five (5) seasons that I've been paying attention (considering both competition and environment). I'd also put playing Marshall in basketball just behind Akron and Kent.

My perception is, relative to other MAC teams, Marshall ranks number one overall (all sports) in the "worth my time category". If they're not back on the schedule next season I will be seriously pissed. We play such an unenjoyable home schedule in general that the loss of Marshall will put me close to the edge. The Herd is a common sense match-up. Let's not over-think this.

This is inexplicable to me.  Play Marshall every year in every sport possible.

Uhg.....

I would agree with The Situation.  Our OOC football and basketball slates are so darn blah, that Marshall is often times one of the few (if any) OOC games you can get evenly midly excited about in regards to looking forward to playing the opposition.  I can name most other OOC teams I'd rather drop instead of Marshall.

At our Caravan stop, Christian mentioned that Ohio was in the middle of a lot of 4-year contracts and that the schedule would be pretty much the same as last year. Add in the 2 extra MAC games and the OSU game and their hands may have been tied. I'm not a journalist but shouldn't have Landon tried to get a response from Ohio for his article? What if Schaus says that they didn't want to buy out any contracts this year but hopes the Marshall series resumes next year and continues for many years to come?

Isn't there a good chance that the Marshall contract (assuming that there was one in place and it had not expired) was easier to get out of than the others and that is why this game was dropped and not another?

If he had done that, he wouldn't have had a topic for his column.  That's the level of journalistic talent we're dealing with here.

it would have taken too much too much time by snail mail since they don't have phones or emails down there. Just kidding, I think.

I obviously missed something that appears in this thread.  How and why is MAC basketball increasing the scheduled league games by 2?  Sorry if I am asking for redundancy but I can't seem to find earlier reference to this and the MAC site didn't help me much..

THANKS for the help

The how is, well, they decided to do it.

The why, ostensibly, is to make scheduling easier. As the season continues to grow, schools have had a harder time finding D-I schools to fill out the non-conference schedule. Taking two games out of the equation ought to make it easier.

  • Thanks JSF.  I kind of gather that from what was said but it sure seems to muddle the tourney seeding picture every year.  I would assume that it will mean adding two non division games and not messing with the in-division home-away arrangement.  Oh well, it will give us with nothing better to do a chance to figure out all the different scenarios of tie breakers.  The problem with it , IMHO, is that the league has put a big premium on the seeding and a quirk of scheduling could conceivably make a huge difference in the bye factor.  For example drawing Toledo twice would generally not be advantageous.

What if the Marshall game was dropped to make room for the OSU game?  That would be hard to argue against, something has to give.

Correct. The two extra interdivision opponents will change every year. So you'd only play Toledo twice every three years, for instance.

But yeah, it adds a little more luck of the draw to things.
