May as well start this now, because in days someone will want someone's job over something. May as well start it now.

I'm slightly sure you're referencing me. Do you not agree that DJ's # should be retired?

It's different, but look at the Packers & Colts. Do the Packers have #4 on their roster? Do the Colts have a #18?

The answer is no.

In the grand scheme of things, it's not a big deal. But I think we owe it to DJ. We should commemorate his success, ASAP. I wish we were able to do it right away, but I've learned that there's rules/regulations in place that makes the process more elongated.

If you were referencing me - feel free to just use my username instead of making a thread trying to possibly belittle other Bobcat fans & I.

Also, I'm not really sure who you want to fire here.

Do you want to fire fellow Bobcat fans & I who disagree with you about DJ's number?

Do you really want to fire a out-of-state student who chose OHIO over the likes of Ohio $tate, Indiana, etc etc?

If OHIO wants to be a relevant athletics program, we need to draw students from out of state - for tuition and exposure purposes. You really want to fire me?

Be on the board long enough, you will see that after a lot of games people post random thoughts on firing this person or that (follow football). Figure I'd help save space and create the coverall thread!

As for DJ's number being retired, no, it should not be. Should the number and name be honored someday? Yes, but not immediately, there are reasons that most all organizations have time limits on honors. And As per university rules, the HOF has even more requirements.

Yes - I recognize the thread title. Good call giving this thread a headstart, I'm sure the crazies will be calling for someones head soon. I've been on the board just as long as you have been.

Why just honor the number and name? What does that even mean? Should retire DJ's number. I will admit I am a huge DJ fan and really want him to be honored in the best way. He gave a lot to OHIO.

Back to your thread title choice. Do you really think I should be fired? Why make a thread to specifically call out a fellow Bobcat Attack member? Seems a little inconsiderate to me - but, hey, we're all just talking Bobcat basketball.

Because we don't retire jersey numbers. 4 players have their jersey hanging in the rafters- Frank Baumholtz, Walter Luckett, Dave Jamerson and Gary Trent. Baumholtz is the only number that is retired. The other 3 are the 3 highest NBA draft picks from Ohio, Cooper wasn't even drafted.  Jamerson and Trent are 1st and 3rd in career points, DJ is 4th.

I'm a big DJ fan too but I was a student during the Trent years and there just wasn't anything like him. 3 time MAC MVP. Scored more points than DJ and played in 50 fewer games. Think about that. Averaged a double-double in his career, 22.7/11.3. Insane numbers. And we're not retiring his number either.

Think about all of the great players that have come and gone though this proud program over the decades, and in all that time we've only put 4 jerseys in the rafters. That is a HUGE honor. And if it happens for DJ one day then he should be very grateful. But we don't retire numbers at Ohio, that's not what we do. And to hear DJ whine about it is very disappointing.

Did not know  that - thanks for posting. Good info for all OHIO fans to know. Gary Trent day at OHIO is now a very confusing and drunken day for me.

DJ certainly should have handled this better.

To be fair, I recall people on this board whining about Gary Trent's number not being in the rafters a couple years ago. Call it whatever you want, I expect DJ up there one day.

Gary waited 18 years, DJ wants his now, he needs some perspective.

I expect it will be up there. Based upon individual stats and the 2 NCAA Tournament appearances (something Dave and Gary didn't have)...he's earned it.

But I think the rule in place is something like you have to wait 10 years. So it'll be a while. Disappointed that he decided to lash out about this.

He really deserves it. Hopefully someday.

I hope DJ doesn't wait 18 years. That is a bit too long, unless there are factors at play with our requirements (degree etc)

I think we should wait at least 5 years but over 15 is too much. 10 years would be a nice target, IMO.

Thread hijack!

And while we're honoring people, we should find a way to honor other key contributors from the 2000's. Brandon Hunter, Leon Williams, Jerome Tillman, Sonny Troutman, Mychal Green, Ken Otrrix, etc. (Ok, maybe my list is a  bit longer than needed, but you get the idea).

Should all of their numbers being hanging in the rafters? No, almost certainly not, but if athletics is looking for another fun, nostalgic promotion, coming up with a way to honor some of those guys who were on multiple All-MAC first teams in the 00's would seem appropriate.

Count me on the "get DJ's number in the rafters" train. I don't have a problem with it taking some seasons to do, but he was one of a handful of the very best players to wear the green and white, ever, and the program experienced unprecedented success with him leading the charge on the floor.

Not to speak for Liquid, but it sounds kind of like "retire his number" is just a euphemism for giving him the "Gary Trent Day" type treatment. Though I didn't read the initial thread.

This was a big part of the delay for Gary.

One of the big reasons they wait, is  they want to see how the person lives their life after leaving Ohio.  They want to be sure to the player's character is representative and worthy of the honor after their playing days.

The biggest reason for the delay w/Trent was finishing his degree - which he did at another institution - nobody on this thread remembers that? And the 10 yr policy has been in effect for a LONG TIME.

Did DJ graduate?

And we have had a few members of our HoF who earned their degrees from another institution, the most famous of which would be Moe Banton who is actually an Akron graduate.

Switching sports in this tweener season when basketball and football overlap, but where are the banners in Peden honoring the Sun Bowl and Tangerine Bowl appearances?  The more recent bowls are all represented.

They all ought to be higher up and more easily visible, though.  Maybe hanging off the new scoreboard!
