Why do my friends (who are AVID OHIO fans) still root for the Buckeyes?

Of course, they're from Ohio. I can confirm that their parents did not attend OSU. 

I have no idea why they are OSU fans. I grew up a big Ohio State fan. (Relevant side story: My father went to OSU for Law School, so I had no choice. To add another layer, the only reason I'm alive is because both my Mom & Dad went to Miami. They are a "Miami Merger" - because they met there and eventually got married). Luckily, my father's three sisters all attended OHIO.

Obviously, I made the correct choice to come to OHIO, leaving OSU & many other schools behind in the dust. So, of course, I became a fully devout OHIO Bobcat fan. Nothing else.

And nowadays, I've converted my Mom & Dad -- they're complete Bobcat fans. My Dad watches almost every Bobcat game while texting me his happy reactions and pissed off opinions on the game. 

Guess who will be attending the Northern Illinois/OHIO game on January 18th? Not me. But..... Yep, without a doubt my parents will be there clad in OHIO gear cheering on our Bobcats.   

Why do my friends at OHIO still root for the Buckeyes? I honestly have no idea. It makes no sense to me.

I grew up in Illinois. Should I still be rooting for Illinois/Northwestern? Am I missing out on something? 

Why do OHIO students still root for the Buckeyes? It makes no sense to me. If we want to really build an outstanding athletic program, we need to eliminate these Ohio kids who still root for the Buckeyes.

Ah - you grew up elsewhere like me. So you were not brainwashed.

That's all there is to it. This state just brainwashes kids on the greatness if TOSU.

And, there is no competition in terms of history and $ and media. There are a few other states like this. Tennessee and Kentucky come to mind.

I was raised in Ohio and was brainwashed for a while.  I did watch OSU football and went to quite a few games.  I never did loose any sleep over what happened but rooted for OSU.  Also watched a lot of OSU basketball...mainly because it was on TV.  I always went to a lot of other college games because I really like basketball.

The big change for me was when Ohio played OSU in the late 90's.  My daughter was a cheerleader for OHIO.  I have many friends who are total OSU fans with the tailgating and whole 9 yards.  We joined them for festivities before and after the game and that was fine.  What was not fine was the treatment the cheerleaders and other Ohio people got from OSU (not fans but officials).  It was condescending and rude, for the most part.  That just turned me off completely and now I am not even a casual fan.  (incidentally, I was on TV that day as OHIO scored to take the lead-I stood up in all my OHIO glory and raised my arms to the sky while the TV cameras were focused on me, what fun!)

What did stand out after that game and after the most recent football game with OSU is that many people were surprised that I REALLY WANTED OHIO TO WIN.  They actually thought that I would be happy with a good showing and that "How could I root for OHIO to win when OSU would loose its chance at a National Championship if OHIO would win?"  

That is the mentality that drives me nuts and sometimes makes my blood boil.  OH-IO, my ass!

I now complete that obnoxious OH-IO with my own BOBCATS!! finish whenever and where ever I hear that cheer.  I love to photo bomb the O-H-I-O hands things with my own U.  It is clear that I am not one of them because I do not own anything scarlet clothing.

Things that annoy me to no end:

5 - People who say cheese coneys are "gross."
4 - Government regulations.
3 - People who crusade against GMO crops.
2 - People who don't like baseball.
1 - Ohio alumni that root for Ohio State.

More specifically, the alumni that spend so much time and energy rooting for Ohio State.  I can stomach (barely) the OU alum who casually still hopes OSU does well, but there is no questioning where their true loyalty lies.  I can even stomach the non-sports fan who doesn't actually care at all about sports and so they are sucked into the social aspect of Ohio State sports.  But the sports fan that went/goes to Ohio, and spends more time, focus and money on OSU....ohhh boy do I have trouble enjoying that person's company.  And honestly, if I was an Ohio State alum, this type of fan would annoying the living crap out of me!  I would scream at them to stop rooting for my school and go root for theirs.

And it is so commonplace (at least in Columbus), that it seems to be the norm.  It usually starts with a "did you go to OU?...Me too!" in reference to some Ohio attire and ends with me just shaking my head.  Calling them out on it is a hobby of mine, and probably damages the potential for any type of pleasant relationship going forward, but you hear so many assanine responses that belittle their alma mater that it disgusts me.  It usually involves them saying OU just isn't "big time" in sports and ends with me telling them maybe that's because they don't have the support of their very own alumni.

No amount of success, recognition and media coverage from another school could make me turn my back on my beloved alma mater.  I want to win tomorrow not to stick it to OSU fans, but to stick it to our own alumni who have disowned us.

The washing is huge thing. I guess I don't understand it. Tennessee & Kentucky definitely do it too.

This story takes the cake. My wife's cousin was married a few years ago in Columbus. He and his wife are both Ohio graduates. At the wedding reception, all the favors were scarlet and grey. They played "Hang On Sloopy" and chanted and even played the OSU fight song. When they had their first child, the Christmas card photo had them all wearing OSU gear.

All I can say is that it must be some psychotic herd mentality if you live in Columbus, with a dash of inferiority complex.

 I can attribute my love of sports to my grandfather.  He actually had 2 TVs (and wanted a third) in his living room when I was growing up so he could watch multiple games at once.  (A skill I picked up from him that drives my wife crazy).  Anyway, he was a huge Ohio State fan.  So growing up, that's what I watched and rooted for.  It's a bond I shared with him.

When I got to Ohio, they went right to the top of my list.  I don't think anyone who knows me will question the pride I have in my alma matter.  I still root for Ohio State when they aren't playing Ohio.  I have a hierarchy of teams I root for.  Ohio is, and always will be, on top.  Ohio is also second and third on the list.  Then there's a mix of Ohio State, Dayton, other MAC teams, and who ever is playing Miami (OH) of Ohio.

I guess what I'm saying is I don't see a problem rooting for both Ohio and Ohio State, as long as they aren't playing each other.  Although I agree if you root for Ohio State over the school you actually went to, thats a problem.  I realize that's not a popular opinion around here, and some people may look down on it, but oh well.  Either way, I'll be in Columbus Tuesday night deck out in Green and white.

Yeah, that's really strange and unfortunate. Their Ohio degrees should be taken away from them. 

I agree with the inferiority complex point. It's definitely true.

This is by far the most frustrating thing on campus. I'll walk up to people on campus who wear OSU shirts and ask them. "why are you wearing that you go to OU" and they reply "I still like Ohio State" Fair enough I can understand that. I grew up a Michigan fan and still cheer them on when they're on TV. Now do I wear Michigan stuff around campus... no but that's besides the point. So after they answer I'll then ask them "If Ohio was playing Ohio State who would you root for" I'd say 50% would say "Ohio State" or "that's a hard choice. It depends on if OSU is having a good year or not"

That is the most frustrating thing I have ever heard. You go to OU why would you not root for Ohio in that situation. Just typing this gets me angry. I'm at a complete loss of words. How can you justify that, anyone have ideas?

It's still something that baffles me. The people I referenced are Ohio first (at least for now) but for some reason it seems really weird/annoying that they still watch & root for tOSU. What happens when people like this graduate from OU? Methinks the Ohio bond lessens (unless we have some big success) and the OSU "bond" strengthens.

There are always going to be people like this.  I have alumni that I've met in Columbus that are like this.  Never come out for OU related events, but always talk about OSU football on their Facebook/Twitter.  I've given up on inviting them to things related to OU.

 

My only argument that I allow for in favor of someone rooting for another school that isn't their alma mater is if there is another personal connection.  Using myself as the example in this case, I'm a big UC Bearcats basketball fan.  I grew up in a pro-UC household, and my Dad graduated from UC.  It's something my Dad and I share all through the winter.  We also talk OU hoops all winter.   You won't see me wearing Bearcats stuff every weekend like I do my OU, but I still watch/listen to plenty of Bearcats basketball.  While I do root for  and follow UC, I don't watch them on TV over being in Athens in person for a game.

To the point of the original post though, I don't understand the mindset of not having pride in one's Alma Mater.  To me that includes more than just athletics.  For the folks that think Ohio isn't "big time" enough, ask them to consult with some Michigan or Georgetown fans and ask if when we beat them in the Tournament, if we were big time enough to win.

I don't hold any ill will towards the suckeye teams themselves, but wow do I despise a large portion of the fan base.  I cannot stomach the arrogance.   I do not own one red piece of clothing for fear of wearing it and being mistaken for one of their fans.  I've heard about all the comments above and each makes my skin crawl.  Particulalry, the astonishment of people can't believe we really want Ohio to beat OSU.  That blows my mind.  I have friends who went to OSU and I have no issues hanging out with them watching a game as they do the same with me occasionally.  The non-alumni are the ones that I cannot deal with.  Once I've detected a poser or someone I know didn't go to school there I usually ask what year they graduated or what they majored in at OSU.  That generally ruffles their feathers at least a little bit.

Here's one for ya, within the last month I saw a picture of one of our former scholarship athletes wearing a script Ohio shirt and tailgating for a suckeye game. GAG.  Reeked of wanting to fit in with the "cool" crowd.  Said individual is an out of state athlete so there was no initial alliance to OSU.  Seriously you got a FREE education at Ohio, and supposedly worked your ass off for 4 years wearing the jersey.  I find that incredibly disrespectful.

We all have horror stories about meeting an alum that is a $tate fan.  I know for me personally, is when I act the most immature.  I say something inappropriate and walk away or I act totally confused that $tate is an actual university.  I say things like, "Oh they compete in the NCAA?"  My personal favorite was when we were in the GMAC Bowl and they had a bowl game the next day.  I had a run in with some traitor Ohio Alumni at the Sports Page in Kihei.  They asked if I was excited for the big game on the 8th? ($ vs. Florida).  I kept insisting the game was on the 7th (US vs. So. Miss).  Finally they broke and said they meant $tate.  I responded, "I had no idea they were in a bowl game.  I am only concerned with Ohio athletics."  I went back to watching my Ohio basketball game and didn't speak to them again.

I think people in general are front-runners, especially during childhood when we are most impressionable.

Ohio State is the only consistently winning athletic team in the state of Ohio.  For whatever reason, everyone in the state feels like they can identify with the school and team(s).  Even if they live nowhere near Columbus...

I lived in Columbus for 2 and a half years and showed extreme apathy towards OSU sports, I might as well have been the biggest Michigan fan on the planet the way people reacted to my disinterest.

I grew up in Ohio and grew up an Ohio fan, not tOSU. Sometimes in my younger years I'd get picked on a little for it, but hey, when we beat Georgetown my sophomore year of high school I made $100 on a bet with some guys in my gym class, so I got the last laugh

Here is my take:

- I have no problem if someone wants to root for Ohio State.  If they were raised an Ohio State fan, that is a good reason to be a fan.  If you are loyal you will stick by your team.  Some will say 'Well then why didn't you go there"... Your education shouldn't be dictated by how much you like the sports team.
- With that being said, they should still be a fan of the Bobcats.  There is really no excuse to come here as a big Ohio State fan and not even remotely root for OU.
- The tough spot is people that root for both teams, and who they would root for if they played.  I wasn't an OU fan when I came to school here, but that quickly changed.  However, I can see how someone rooting for OSU for 15 years would have trouble rooting against them in such a small time frame.  

Overall, I think it would be foolish to rip on all the half OSU Half OU fans.  Those OSU fans are exactly the type that we need to start turning into diehard OU fans.  OU and OSU are not on the same level on the field...I wish we were and I hope we win, but realistically we are not.  There is no reason we can't have diehard OSU fans also be die hard OU fans.  It would be like a Toledo Mud Hens fan not being allowed to root for the Indians.....
