If the fouls called were due to the new rules then they definitely forgot the rules when tOSU was on defense.  Actually a lot of fouls on OHIO were inside and not called on hand checks.  The announcers kept talking about total fouls late in the game and intimating that it had to do with getting used to new rules.  They failed to mention the discrepancy in fouls.

Their bigs played more sure of themselves early on and some of our early fouls were due to that, in my opinion.  Later on, however, when the game remained close tOSU got a lot of breaks at both ends of the floor.   Aaron Craft is really good and I would like him a lot more if he were on my team but he also gets a lot of leeway when going for steals.

All in all, this is what I expected to happen tonight.  That having been said my cats will probably not come out from under the bed all night after my many outburst of a certain and loud expletives.

tOSU made 36 free throws.  Ohio loses by 10.  That's life on the road.

This team impressed me tonight but I am  going to ask my doctor to up my beta blocker prescription so I don't get to excited to early

We're on the same level as they are (tonight.)  They didn't have a match for our intensity, but when you shoot two free throws on 60 percent of your possessions (rough guesstimate) and you're a good free throw team (props to State) you will usually win.  Blame it on the refs, blame it on the rules.  Both can be fair assessments, but I think we did make too many mistakes to win.  I have no doubt we could beat them.  In Athens, I would possibly expect it.

I am proud of this team; after the start we could have folded.  But we clawed back to be within five at one point.  This team is going to be dangerous.

We're going to be a force to be reckoned with this year.

Is Aaron Craft a nice guy?  If so I will be ashamed of the opinion I've formed of him.  For some reason he reminds me of every cocky, arrogant, obnoxious player I ever ran into (a million years ago when I was a mediocre high school athlete at best).

I've heard that Craft is actually a pretty nice guy.  He does seem like he would be pretty arrogant, but a friend of mine who went to Ohio State said he was nice.

It's probably due to the fact that he has rosy cheeks, draws invisible fouls, and acts like he has never committed a foul in his life....  Yea..Not my favorite player either.

Heh; I asked my girlfriend if she knew which brand of blush he wore.  I've always thought that was funny.

The new rules had a lot to do with it but there were a bunch of instances where we just couldn't buy a whistle.  Ndour should have been at the line about ten more times than he was.  And Setty completely baited their big guy into an offensive foul during a stoppage and he plowed right over him but no whistle.  And I'm sorry but if a guy is out of control and runs into a defender it shouldn't be a foul. They got bailed out four or five times on that one.

That being said they are pretty darn good.  Deep, big and fast.  This will be a good learning experience.  Not happy about the result but I'll say I'm encouraged.  We could have folded up the tents and gone away but we didn't.

Sad deal. Clearly a charge and add this one to the list. That is why I say we play this game in Athens or not at all. These refs probably have some tie to Columbus State. If not, they are feeding off the sidewalk alumni crowd noise.

I've seen this so many times in the past. However, you have to learn to live with it. I like what I see tonight from OUR BOBCATS (in hoops)!!

same refs we have had for years. work both conferences

They are mainly big ten guys but work Mac on a regular basis. YOu will see them in the Convo this year and at the MAC tourney. Bank it.

I do not think it had much to do with the new rules. We flat out got caought in bad rotations, going under screens and not sliding our feet. It has to do as much with accountability on defense and applying the working defensive philosophy. I do not know what is being preached in practice or what the scout said but clearly if they are not moving their feet they are gonna collect fouls. I do think the home team got some calls not only with regard to fouls but a couple fo missed/blown out of bounds calls. We clearly blew the scout on some of those inbounds plays

I was reading the "Battle of Ohio" thread on OSU's board and they complained about the officiating as much as we are.  Apparently, average Big Ten reffing isn't much better than ours.

I was proud that Ohio refused to rollover and show State our bellies!  I am referring to hoops because football did rollover and show BG State our bellies immediately.

No moral victories here, I'm upset we didn't win that game.  All the fouls (mostly our own doing but some of them were kind of garbage) combined with all the missed open look mid-range jumpers and it was frustrating.  We could've had that game easy.  I am a little surprised with how positive everyone is, but maybe it is people who thought we would struggle this year and are getting to where I already was, which is thinking we are a MAC championship caliber team.

I thought Ndour struggled a bit tonight but the talent showed again despite it, reminded me a little bit of Keely with the butterfingers.  Rico struggled with his jump shot tonight...and Hall/Setty/Smith, jeez...about a foul a minute.  TJ has always been extremely foul prone - He must improve this if he wants the playing time he was probably expecting.

What can you stay about Stevie and Nick, tremendous play all around.  2 games in and are starting/primary 5 is already taking a pretty defined shape.

I'm happier about how we played than the final score.  I'm bummed we didn't win too, but the excitement I have for the team is thinking about how high our ceiling is this season.  I don't think we're near our potential yet and we had a chance to knock off a nationally ranked team in their house.

We had a great opportunity in Columbus, where the ramifications of a win were pretty well documented on this board.  But unlike football, your biggest opportunity doesn't hinge on one non-conference game, no matter who it is against.

The game sort of reminded me of the UNC game.  Early on we didn't look like we belonged in the same gym as they did but we composed ourselves and made a game of it.

I am with Andrew Ruck...This was not a moral victory and I am still pissed we didn't win.  I am pleased that despite the discrepancy in fouls (I also agree that many-maybe most of our fouls were fouls...the problem was that many of the same actions by the other team were not called fouls) OHIO played like it could win.

I think some of you are a little too optimistic about how things would have gone if this hadn't been such a foul laden game.  We were able to play with rhythm when we made our run, tOSU had little rhythm due to going to the line so much.  The fouls took them out of their game, I'm not saying the game wouldn't have been closer and tougher if there had been less fouls.  I just think you give us alot of benefit if there was less fouls while forgetting the benefits that tOSU would have gained as well with less fouls.

I wish we could have seen them later on in the season.  I think that by late December we will be a  much better team than we are now.  Once everyone gets settled into their roles and we work out the kinks, we will be a nightmare for most of our opponents.

You have a good point here.  However, I would like to point out that when Ohio State was on defense, they really didn't look like anything special.  Sure, offense can be taken out of a game, but I think that had they shut us down on defense I would be more inclined toward your argument.

So you think that having to get two points at the line and having our best players forced to sit is worse than getting into an offensive rhythm and getting those two points from the floor?   They had one player with four fouls and he played 37 minutes.  We had five players foul out.  The fouling may have gotten them out of their rhythm a little but it was still a huge benefit to them overall. Huge benefit.

Unlike the UNC game, I never got the feeling we could win last night's game, even while we were coming back. But it was really good to see an Ohio team show some spirit in the face of adversity, something that's been lacking from the guys who play across Richland from the Convo.
