Where does Northern Iowa rank in terms of OOC opponents in the Convo over the last 2 decades?

Thinking back, the only ones comparable from a program standpoint would be:

Temple
Virginia
DePaul
Wisconsin
West Virginia
Rhode Island
Xavier

And you could argue UNI ahead of a few of those. Thoughts?

Kentucky
George Washington
George Mason

A buy game to get Kentucky into the Convo would be nice.

I hope we aren't looking at the back of a tuba all game long.

Video Feed: the video feed is up early and looks clear.  looks like the graphics for the team names and scores as been updated slightly.

BUT, the camera is placed below the tops of the Tubas so when the tubas move around the entire court is blocked from view. I hope this gets fixed before the tip off.

Stevie, Ric and Mo definitely the big stars of the first half.   Setty looks intriguing as well. He's a lot quicker than I expected.

What a game. 20 points for N'dour, 16 for Kellogg, 14 for Ricardo, and 10 points with 8 asissts for Stevie.

By the end of the year, that could look like a very good win. Northern Iowa was picked 3rd in the MVC.

That's a solid win against a good team.  Nick was huge down the stretch.  How the heck is Mo not starting for a Big 6 program?

It sure will.  We should feel lucky that we played them early on because they have a lot of good talent out there that is going to take some time to mesh. (Of course, you could say the same thing about us)   We did a very good job scouting because we really made them work for their buckets.  We were great against Tuttle who is a tremendous player.  Washpun and Mitchell are both extremely quick and will give a lot of teams problems.

For a first game out, very impressed with how the team played as a unit. Few turnovers, quality defense, and contributions from a lot of guys.

Ndour really impressed me, especially in the first half. If he's going inside and out, that really presents a heck of a tough matchup for the opposition, to say nothing of the shot blocking he and Jon were up to. Kellogg with a huge finish - love seeing him drive as well as spot up. Taylor had a few really nice splits of the D in the first half, too - to say nothing of the assists. I feel like he grew a lot running the show from last season.

Obviously some things to work on and clean up, but it's the first game out, and I'm really happy. Also pleased that we were able to play D without a ton of hand check calls - hope that is called relatively consistently between crews this season. I was surprised that it seemed the charge/block emphasis was a bigger story in this one than the hand checks, to be honest.

D'Nour was impressive today. If he is able to play this well night in and night out then we made a great find.

Well then. I didn't expect a whole new cast of players to gel that quickly. A really nice win.

- Stevie Taylor no longer has to be in D.J. Cooper's shadow. He can just be himself. And that looks like a really solid point guard. There will be games where Bean Willis' size will play better, other games where Taylor does the trick. Could be a good duo. I think Willis plays better than today going forward. Seemed a tad overeager.

- MAC: Good luck finding a guy to guard Ndour.

- Jon Smith has quietly been really good for two-plus years now. I get the feeling he's going to get a lot more of a spotlight this MAC season for just how much better he makes the Bobcats when he's out on the floor.

-The finish to Nick Kellogg's 2012-2013 season is just going to look like some weird shooting aberration when we look back at his time in Athens.

Excellent win against a really quality opponent.  I hope we put together a quality performance on Tuesday, no matter the result.

I thought that was a pretty good Northern Iowa squad, making that performance all the more impressive. For as well as we played, we let them stick around. Would have liked to see us pull away a bit more, but again that was a good team. I thought we played a little sloppy as well. Excited to see this team after they get some more playing-time together.

Really good win today, I was very impressed with Mo, but also Ricardo and Stevie, and Jon Smith was Jon Smith and Nick was awesome down the stretch.  Love seeing him shoot with confidence and also go to the basket.

BUT, man we have to be better at blocking out down low, putting bodies on guys around the bucket.  UNI had way to many offensive rebounds and second chance points.  This has to get under JC's skin and hopefully it will be corrected.  UNI is a really good team and I was thinking we were getting out-coached there for awhile early in the second half when whatever they were doing on defense was taking us completely out of our offense and we seemed to have no idea what to do.  Bean forced a few trying to bail us out.

Great crowd, band was fantastic, but I missed the "flags of the world" hanging above, anybody know what's up with that?  Really makes the place look bland without them.

I saw that the flags were down last spring when I came through. Thought it might be temprorary but have my doubts. I always like the international flavor we had and celebrated.

I waslked out with the UNI team. They had good things to say about the atmosphere and asked about the guys who graduated while recalling the game out there..... but the first question they asked was "is that band always that loud?" They were impressed by this team and the crowd/Convo.

Nice win. Ndour is a sweet player. Vets were awful good today. Bean has to go into attack mode. SLow recovering on screens, defensive faux pas and bouncing the ball directing traffic was not what I expected. I suspect he is a lot better than we saw to day but it made Stevie who looked really really good just seem that much better. Mompremier has some skills but is going to work to get into the system while Setty looked very much at home right out of the box. Came right in and got a great bucket in transition. RIc is kickin it while TJ is solid . Nick is very good defensively this year but UNI obviously ran him off the 3 line today. Even with what they did with the scout on him he handled it and was very effective.   .

Great start.

We only turned it over 6 times and held NIU to 39% shooting--that'll play.

First thing I checked was assists to turnovers 16/6 I think they were 11/13...that number will kill you on the road. We did a great job with the ball and turning them over on D.

I really like this team, they are fun to watch and a group of guys that are easy to root for. Should be an exciting season.

Nice win.  Nice game all around.

I thought NIU had a couple of guards that will be as quick as we might see through the season.  Early on NIU #1 took it to the ball towards the hole almost every time against Stevie (this is not a bitch but an observation) who could not keep up with him.  However, Stevie did maintain poise and let help happen without panicking.  Willis was quicker but still had had trouble with this guy. All in all it seemed like the defensive game plan allowed for this and counted on shutting most everyone else down.  Worked pretty well I think.

I thought the offense movement was, generally, pretty good.  There was a very obvious pattern at times with all 4 guys without the ball moving in good rotation to create continuous possible options.  The times the offense broke down was pretty hard to watch though.  Long periods of standing around and then the dreaded last second prayer.  Later on when running down the clock I was encouraged that there was an actual effort to try to get a good look through a couple different options as the clock ran down.

last week in the exhibition game there was a time when a forward actually rolled after a screen on top.  Today there were actual passes made on the roll. WooHoo, made an old man smile.

Defense was intense the whole game.  A few too many second chance shots for my liking but most of the time that seemed like it came from having to help when #1 and #11 were able to penetrate. That problem will not be as bad in too many games I don't think.

Realize it is only one game but the coaching staff as a whole seemed really into the game.

Just a few random observations from an old time basketball plan.  I liked what I saw and heard today.

If I had a dime for every person that called them NIU today I'd be eating steak dinner at the OU Inn tonight. It's UNI!!

Heck, even the PA announcer called them Northern Illinois TWICE!
