I agree with LongDistance as to why you have Bean in there at the end.  Bean hasn't shown much thus far, especially stat-wise...but something about him makes me trust him.  I'm not saying I prefer him to Stevie, I am just happy to have both.

Some other thoughts:
  • Ndour is awesome.  I'm sad we only get 2 years.  I'm all aboard the hype train here.
  • Kellogg is elevating his game...Spot up shooter no more.  I believe borna touched on this being a product of the previous regime, it looks like JC doesn't discourage him moving with the ball and driving more.  I could see him nabbing 1st team all MAC this year.
  • Jon Smith and Ricardo Johnson are both much more controlled than their younger years.  More sure-handed and assertive.  They're in for good senior seasons along with Nick.
  • I mentioned it in another thread, but TJ has always been prone to foul trouble and it seems to have gotten worse.
  • Mark my words - Treg will be one of if not the most hated player in the MAC by his senior year.  Happy to have him on the Bobcats, but he will rub opposing fan bases the wrong way on the court.
  • The 25-8 run in 7 minutes by Valpo was excruciaitng, but much of it was them hitting tough shots.
  • The blocking call on Nick midway thru the 2nd half was the worst call I have seen since the 4 yard line safety.
  • Great lock down defense with 12 steals, this team brings the intensity on D.
  • Right or wrong, I get the vibe we won't be anywhere near the top of the nation in assists like we were last year.
  • Still not ready to say this team is better than last year's, but am ready to say this is no rebuilding year (but I said that from the beginning).
Morgan State will be a good test.  Without sounding too much like McKinney, they won't be easy to beat on the road despite their struggles.

Well said.  I might add, if the blocking call on Kellogg was the worst call ever, the continuation call for an and-1 late in the second half was right behind it at #2.  I'm blanking on who was called for the hand check, might have been Stevie, but the foul was near the free throw line and they counted the layup.  This isn't the NBA.

With regards to Bean being in those last two minutes, it seemed to me that Stevie was being beaten off the dribble a lot by their guard, Dority I think was his name.  #4 for Valpo.  Bean seemed to do a much better job keeping him in front of him.  Stevie had a big steal and layup in the 2nd half, but he got beat several times and had an all-around lackluster game.  Especially compared to his play in the first two games and exhibition.  Hopefully it was an aberration.  Kellogg was huge again.

Great recap Andrew.  Love the way Nick has stepped up.   We need to get Bean more involved and get his confidence going.  Right now he's refusing to drive to the hoop and the offense just comes to a complete halt when he's in there.  Stevie had his worst game of the year yesterday but the offense ran ten times better when he was in there.

Completely agree about Setty and I think he'll be extremely valuable with his energy.

I'd also add that the new emphasis on hand checks on the perimeter combined with the change in the charging rule is making for a game that I'm not enjoying watching.  I'm hoping this changes but right now about 50% of possessions end up with a player driving to the hoop and getting fouled.  IMO, they have to stop calling every bit of contact on drives.  There is literally no way to defend a player that drives right now.  All he has to do is beat his man down the lane and then jump into the help defender and he's getting the call.  I'm fine eliminating the hand checking and arm bars but if the help defender does not initiate contact and just puts his arms in the air you can't call a foul on him.

I agree.  But, this doesn't seem to be happening in games I'm watching on TV -- excepting the OSU game at the end of which Craft could get a whistle simply by asking for it.  I don't see nearly the same amount of foul calls so far.  Although I've just watched 2-3 games at this point.  So, either Ohio is doing something wrong, or our perceived struggle with refereeing continues.

You and I must be watching different games then. It has happened in nearly every game that I've seen so far particularly in the second halves.  I watched the Oregon State-Maryland game last night and Maryland kept getting back into the game but they couldn't get a defensive stop because once a guy started to drive there was no way to stop him. There were about four or five instances where what had been considered good defense in the past was whistled for a foul.

Anybody else watch the Belmont upset of UNC? Belmont had like 8 guys with 4 fouls, but luckily for them a UNC player was 2-14 from the line and the 3 ball was going down all night for them.  The refs tried their hardest to give UNC the win, but the 3 ball saved it for Belmont

The one thing that OHIO needs to improve on the most -- FOUL SHOOTING!  This game would not have been close at the end if we had shot a decent percentage of our foul shots throughout the game.

I love the analysis of the game starting with LongDistance's post about Bean being in the last 2 minutes.  I agree with all that has been said and remain definitely on the UP side of the potential for this team this year.

I hope that Bean gets a confidence boost from being in there when it mattered the most.  It was a good call by the coaching staff because Valpo had Stevie's number on the drives to the bucket.

I thought TJ played with more confidence as the game went on.  He has had foul trouble as have John Smith and Ricardo Johnson in the past but so far this year they have played "like they have been there before" and that makes a difference because they are not tentative in their actions.  It is often the tentativeness that magnifies a reach in type foul.. Setty has some of the same issues.  He is often just a half-step slow and does not get the benefit of the doubt...He will also improve and gives OHIO good minutes.

I think the assist thing has a bit to do with the discussion about Kellogg moving WITH the ball.  If you think about the games so far in this short time there are a lot more attempts at penetration by most players.  Ndour with a turn-around or step or two before shooting, Smith and Ricardo driving and the aforementioned Kellogg. There are just as many passes to the shooters but the shooter makes a move with the ball more.. I would be concerned if it were just dribble, dribble, dribble SHOOT all the time but there is good movement without and with the ball (except at times when we are running the clock down and get mired in ugly standaroundness (obviously a made up word)

This is just my observation but in 3 games JC seems to be much more animated and "into" the game than he did at times last year.  Some real intensity yesterday and nice interaction with the players (both encouraging and when taking advantage of a "coaching opportunity")

So far I like what I have seen more than what I don't like and remain cautiously optimistic.
