UMass snuck in at #24 today.

When's the last time we played a ranked opponent in the Convo?

Using the Records section of ohiobobcats.com as a guide, 12-30-1997 when Kentucky came in.

Unless I'm missing something, Akron was #25 last February when they came to Athens.  Right?

We have 3 games before this as does UMass. I would say 2/3 for each are tough but very winnable.

If we both manage to win all heading in...

We probably will be favored in all three but each of them is a very tough game.  Mercer is a very good team and Evansville just handled them with ease. Oakland has had a rough start but whomever drew up their schedule should write a treatise on how to crush a team's spirit out of the gate.  They have yet to play a home game. Our game against them on the 7th will their first real home game of the year. This stretch of games will tell us a lot about the team.

Barring an unexpected stumble, I think they'll easily be higher than that.

I like our schedule this year.  Mercer is a very good team...glad to play them tonight.  As others have said, we have some others, like Evansville and UMass coming in to the Convo.

Despite the fact that some say it isn't exciting, I like the schedule as well.  If you're a knowledgeable basketball fan at all, you understand that UMass, UNI, and even Mercer and Evansville are good games.  Wish I could make tonight's game, but I'll be at the Evansville and UMass games.

I thought so too, so I checked the web page... of course now I notice thats only through the 2011-2012 season.

If EMU upsets a top 25 team in Ypsilanti but no one is there to see it, does it happen?

The more I look at our schedule the more annoyed I 'am with it. The students won't be in Athens for a game until. correct me if I'm wrong. Jan 12 vs Akron. That's ridiculous. I love the teams we have on our schedule but we need to schedule these games when the home court advantage will actually be a factor. We have 3 huge games against Mercer, Evansville, and Umass that most students will miss.

ESPN says they were #24 in the Coaches Poll on 2/25/13, two days before coming to the Convo.  They were just out of the top 25 in the AP poll.

So do we root for EMU to rep the conference, or UMass to pump up their ranking and presence before they arrive in the Convo?

Definitely EMU....Since UMASS considers their bball program above MAC level, it'd be nice if the MAC could pull off the wins.  They can then go out and win all their other games.

Kind of hard with league play taking up the majority of the 2nd half of the season. Semesters are way better for home games while students are in town. On Quarters they'd already be gone and not back until after the 1st.

Not only does UMass consider themselves above the MAC, they are above the MAC.

Its a shame the conference has neglected men's basketball to the point that programs like Temple and UMass have no interest in joining.

I usually root for the MAC in all cases, but in this case I'm leaning towards rooting for UMass.  I just think having a ranked opponent come to the convo and knocking them off would do more for the program and the current year resume.

Under the Quarters system students would have missed the following home games-

11/26 Mercer
11/30 Evansville
12/18 UMass
12/30 Longwood

Under the Semester system students will miss the following home games-

11/26 Mercer
11/30 Evansville
12/18 UMass
12/30 Longwood

That's only 4 home games in five weeks. By comparison, Ohio State will play 9 home games while the students are on break, including games vs Maryland, Notre Dame, and Nebraska. Their biggest OOC home game this year while the students are at school is against a MAC team.

Students not being around in Dec. is an issue all schools deal with.

I do to but I have to admit that I was rooting against Akron when I watched them play Middle Tennessee.  I know it's against our best interest but I just couldn't bring myself to do it.

[start rant] Well, if we had a real semester system rather then this "cheating, fake semester system," students would be in Athens until a few days before Christmas and then return at the beginning of the first full week of January.  That was the semester system (then called the "fast semester system" because it started in late August) that I taught under at two different institutions.  It was 16 weeks long, excluding finals. What the higher education bureaucracy in the State of Ohio has concocted is a 14-week system (exclusive of finals) that supposedly has the same number of hours by extending the length of each class period by several minutes.  I submit that this is really cheating the students, the faculty and the General Assembly, which provides funds based on class hours. [/end rant]

By the way, for you fine folks that run our site here, the schedule page for this game is indicating 12-17, and I'm fairly sure that it's 12-18 for the UMass game.
