With all the so called holiday tournaments, why don't we play in one? Seems like a fair amount of good press and a reward for the players.

We kinda did, just not really advertised that much, but we have been participating in the Ohio Classic which featured us as host, along with Mercer, Valpo, and Evansville all playing round robin games with a few D3 schools in there for good measure.

What this meant is that we get 3 extra regular season games and to have all of them be home games is a great move.  Though, it would be better to get some exposure in one of the known tournaments and get some experience playing in a neutral court.  But, until we start getting invited to the real tournaments we'll just have to make do.

[edit: By the way, here is a link to the crazy list of all the tournaments]

Pittsburgh is a fun town to hang around a few days/nights and not too far for Bobcat Fans along I-77 and east.

IMO it would be neat to have a showcase there every year over a holiday.  Group Bobby Mo, Duquesne, Pitt, WVU, Youngstown State, OHIO, Penn State and perhaps St. Bonaventure and a Maryland team and some lower mid majors to rotate in once in a while. I realize some of the teams wouldn't want to play each other at that time so there wouldn't be a single winner--just a showcase.

Two gyms nearly across the street from each other in Duquesne and the Consul Center could host the event--perhaps 3 games in 5 day type set-up.  Fans have gambling, hockey, museums and lots of cultural things to do on their stay.  Close proximity so travel costs are low and these teams would have some nice OOC scheduling automatically each year.

I'm sorry, but what we're playing in cannot qualify for a real holiday toury IMHO. You know what I mean.

These holiday tournaments are scheduled one to two years ahead of time.  Coaches need to have a feel for what they will have before they commit to them.  I am guessing you will be pleased with what they have planned in the future.

Your HO is trumped by the NCAA, which says it's a proper tournament and thus gives us extra games to play. That's all that matters, anyway.

that's not all that matters, the prestige in playing in a real holiday tourney matters. All the folks that talk about all the TV exposure must be underground on this one.

They are also a lot of fun for the fans.  What we just played in, and have played in for a few seasons, is good for scheduling but I'd be willing to bet a large percentage of our fans didn't even know we were in a tournament.

Back in the day, with quarters, we used to go to one or two holiday tourneys in December.  One that comes to mind was the Carrier Classic in Syracuse.  I think we did well but can't remember.  There were lots of others too!  Anybody have a better memory than me?

We did do well and won it.  I believe we were the first team other than Syracuse to win it.  I might be mixing up players but I believe Donny Marshall was ejected for elbowing Jeff Boals in the head or something like that.

Just did some research and we did win it but I was off on when.  We won it in December, 1998 which was well after Donny Marshall and Jeff Boals were gone. That and Donny Marshall was on UConn. DOH! We then beat UIC in the championship game.  We did beat UConn as well but that was obviously a different tournament.

Edit:  The UConn win was in a December, 1993 tournament. We went on to win that one as well with a victory over LaSalle.

Thanks, that's what I was thinking after my brain fart but I couldn't be totally sure.  I also remember we won a tournament with Stanford involved some time in the 90s as well.

I seem to remember going to Anchorage one year to watch the Bobcats play in the Great Alaska Shootout. Maybe '95? I could be mistaken. (I'm old.)

Ohio plays in a Holiday Tournament and it sacrifices home games. That is all there is to it. If you want to do something for the fans a 1 for 1 series with Dayton would be a start instead of Heidelberg.

Hedelberg was on the schedule because Cal Poly pulled out of this tourney.

good point. I'm wondering if we play some of these guys on the road next year to repay for our home games this year. Anybody know?

I doubt the Maui Invitational called us and we said no. There's like 5 tournaments worth participating in. Otherwise, take the home games.

I don't think so. Two years ago, the game against Louisville was part of one of these kinds of tournaments. Ohio got all the other games at home but we haven't returned any of the other games (Tennessee-Martin and Lamar were two of the teams Ohio had at home).

I think Ohio got a pretty good deal this year to host one of these tournaments (getting all of the games at home) and the quality of the teams involved was actually pretty decent. Most of the teams have few losses outside of the games they played against each other.

I thought I read on here that Dayton wasn't willing to do a 1 for 1 series with us.

Yes and only the 10 Miami basketball fans that are out there tout hearing summer recaps as a highlight. P.S. Coach Cooper of Miami traveled to Europe recently.

Of course not - just like Cincy and X. Wonder if Heidelberg is bitchin' that we won't do 1 for 1 w/them......................

ONLY way this changes folks is if the questions come from the reverse - and ONLY way that changes is WINNING MORE BIG GAMES - In the Convo and IN AWAY BIG FOE GYMS!  All else is just WHINING.....................
