Who on here said Ike was a swing and a miss? The guy has played three games. I said a week ago it’s going to take him the entire non conference schedule to gain confidence.

Seriously?!!!!

What made you compare Gabe to the Zipmeister, Tree? Emotionally becoming unhinged? Power moves in the paint? Making hard fouls and getting away with them from the refs?

Two quick things about the broadcast. Did anyone hear Russ say that he’s not going to the Bahamas because he’s doing the Akron/Ohio football game next Friday? That has to absolutely suck. With that said, I’m assuming Marty is going to the Bahamas to do the radio games next week solo?

Also, I like how the production is involving different student sideline reporters for each game. I thought the kid who did it today really work hard and did his research and did a really nice job.

In the past, there have been tournaments where other teams in the tournament broadcasters have call our games when they aren't playing. That may be the case.

There was a post in the previous game thread that he looks like a bust. Have to love how he played today. 12 points, 4 rebounds, and a block in 19 mins.

Gabe plays a solid game and you blame refs for not calling fouls on him. Root for another team.

Speaking for myself (from last game) ... [QUOTE=OUcat] Between Wiz and Cornish (so far) it makes you wonder what these recruiting sites are looking at when they give these guys 3-4-5 stars. Reserving a bit of judgement on Cornish as it's clear he needs a redshirt to fill out and mature.

Still, that would make him a 3-star at best (coming out of high school) with 'upside' to a 4-5-star as he matured. His best days are ahead of him, hopefully.

I stand by that re: fill out and mature ... but there is talent there.

It's a bummer Rob and Russ can't get a good vacation. We may have to have a secret Santa on their behalf. Mercy has opened up on the road as usual for them in the past. I like to see players finding their roles. I see progress in that. I could list a few examples. We got a victory, and hopefully there can be some "team bonding" time next week. Without a (real) big, lol. I have been pleased with Clayton hustling. He was one of a few that had a good TEAM game. I forgot to ask if anyone is informed about Miles? I hope it's nothing terrible. He has become a great floor leader.

This was a game where our depth was on full display. AJ Brown and Elmore James combined for 12 points on 4-19 shooting and Ohio still won by 19 against a team they were supposed to handle.

Strong game of Clayton. Hunter was solid. Liked what I saw from Ike Cornish off the bench, has some slashing ability. Hadaway, Wiznitzer and Sheldon didn't look lost when in the game.

Detroit isn't good but I'm encouraged by this team early on.

Ole Miss hung on vs. Detroit Mercy by one point who hadn't won vs an SEC team in 65 years, had lost their first two games by a combined ~70 points, was missing two guys...

Not a good look for Ole Miss.
Ha, we'll be fine.

I remember your post and there’s a big difference in thinking somebody is a swing and a miss compared to wanting somebody to redshirt. I just knew that nobody on here would call Cornish a swing and a miss after only three games. That would have been ridiculously premature .

It wasn’t your comment (which was rational). It was this one -

Cornish is a second swing and miss, it seems like.

I don't understand the approach at all. If a guy can't contribute at all at Maryland or a very bad Louisville team, what's the likelihood he's a contributor in the MAC. There's just no way that the 10th guy in a P5 rotation is magically a difference maker for us. The gap just isn't that substantial between a good MAC team and a bad P5 team.

I hope I jumped the gun. But I think the track record of non-contributors at the P5 level being difference makers in the MAC isn't great. I just don't think the gap is that big between the bottom/mid P5 teams and the top of the MAC.

What's irrational about that?

Honestly, I thought this was sarcasm.

12 pts, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 block in 19 minutes in his 3rd game is a swing and miss?

These posts are a swing and miss. It's clear he needs more PT.

Aren't you busy over on the football board, or is your three week meltdown calling for firings over a potential 10 win team over?

Like I said, I hope I'm wrong about Cornish. But the track record and early signs aren't great. A few things:

1. Every season Boals starts with a big rotation and shortens the bench substantially once the season goes on. Cornish only cracked 10 minutes per game in a blowout win. Not a lot of guys I can remember that went from end of the rotation guys to big contributors during the course of the year under Boals. His minutes aren't encouraging.

2. When he plays, he's been a high volume, low efficiency player. He's only shooting 41% from the field, 20% from three, and turns the ball over 12% of the time he touches it. He's basically last on the team in winshares and winshares per 40. Only Estis and Corna behind him.

Happy to be wrong, and hope it's just a sample size thing. Those advanced stats are trending in the right direction from his time at Maryland (and his assist rate is way, way up -- he managed to never record an assist in 100 minutes at Maryland), so that's promising.

But I'd like to see the data on the number of guys who had such low rate stats across 100 minutes in a major conference, and turned out to be above average in a lower conference. I suspect it's not a very long list.

I thought it was irrational to refer to a guy as a swing and a miss after less than 20 mins of playing time. Kenny Kaminski and Walter Offutt both say hi. MSU and OSU are consistently better than Maryland, but neither contributed at the P5 level and were pillars for us.

Kaminski averaged more minutes at MSU as a freshman than Cornish is averaging for us through three games. His rate stats were very good, including 49% from three, a TS% of 69%, in over 300 minutes. A lot more there than Cornish.

Offut wasn't very good at OSU, you're right. Hopefully Cornish ends up like him. But I don't see much that projects great from his rate stats. He seems like a hh volume shooting wing who can't shoot threes.

What's he bring the team that nobody else does? Between Elmore, AJ, Hunter, Shareef, Hadaway, and Sheldon, whose minutes is he taking?

I'm just not a huge fan of wings who can't shoot in today's game, and suspect it's a scholarship spot we're using without a very high ceiling. The goal of the portal should be vets that contribute immediately. The best case for Cornish is, what, our #5 perimeter guy?

Dude, Cornish has taken five 3PT attempts this season and you’re going to cherry pick that he basically sucks from 3PT range and he can’t contribute immediately? All in a game where no one is was hitting a 3. He was 3-3 at the line, had a beautiful slash the basket for a three-point play with 12 points overall. Grabbed 4 rebounds and even had a block when he saw an uptick in minutes.

Yea I think we need to let this one play out more.
