Love the overall discussion but as it relates to IJ — I was told earlier he’s academically ineligible (not shocking, with him in steer clothes). So, who knows if and when we’ll see him at this rate.
If true, I have no words. Dude sits out an entire year with a redshirt which should also help with academics. So best case scenario now....we don't see him at the earliest until after last day of fall classes....December 9th. I'm not holding my breath.
Has he not had ample time by Dec. 9th to get caught up on his schoolwork?
Eligibility is figured off of the last semester. So no, he would be in this situation until the end of semester and new grades are posted. It is either a GPA or Hours issue.
I just cannot fathom an athlete not being able to maintain eligibility. I doubt my guy is majoring in advanced chemistry. There are so many avenues in which to learn, cheat, etc. Chegg? They have the homework answers online. Do that. You have a paper due? Have AI do it. Then re-write it in your own words. Showing up to class is half the battle. You have a team of advisors; you literally have a team in which to get help. They have progress reports. You can see yourself about to fail - and then get help. That is a knucklehead. No place for someone who can't be bothered to go to class.

*edit* unless they average 20-10, in which case, these athletes have it tough, there are many pressures we don't see which impede them from doing homework.
Agree...with all the academic resources these scholarship athletes have...to not be able to maintain eligibility is inexcusable. Completely letting your team down. I have very little patience here as well with Ezuma. Injury is one thing...academics is another. It's not hard to go to class and pass.

I'd also add that the men's hoops team gets even more attention from academic resources than other sports. I had several classes with basketball players back in my day and they had dedicated staff take attendance as the kids walked into class.

In every 1 on 1 meeting I had with my coaching staff, academics was the first topic brought up. He would literally pull up my grades and attendance records and address any issues before even getting into athletic performance topics.

I put some of this on Boals potentially not getting out in front of this and by the time it was addressed, it was too late.

I've said it in other threads and I'll say it again... if not NOW, WHEN?

He squandered an opportunity to potentially start or get major minutes if he worked hard. Back in my day assistants had a group of kids that they stayed on top of... getting to class, practice, grades, etc... the resources are vast, and they were squandered. You aint gotta go home, but you gotta get the hell up outta here.

I honestly can't say it any better. I mean you nailed it as have others discussing all of the academic resources at the disposal to these student-athletes. I have no sympathy here and if he never plays for Ohio again....so be it. He should not be allowed to go to the Bahamas and use that time instead to focus on his academics.

THAT... and don't forget we are not talking about Hakeem Olajuwon here.

When he actually did play, he averaged 1.6ppg and 1.2 boards per game.

I wouldn't go so far as to say he should stay home for the Bahamas trip if the suspension is based on academic performance in the previous term. If it is, going on the trip should be earned based on immaculate class attendance and effort and reasonable performance throughout this entire fall semester.

Are we being a little judgmental in the absence of all the facts. In addition he might be the answer to our dreams if his bio is to be believed.

I think he's simply saying that there may be more to this story than our speculating and trying to set terms for his traveling with the team. It is an impressive bio. I still trust that Boals knows what he's is doing here.

To be clear I have read the thread. My point is that there doesn’t seem to be much in the way of verifiable facts. Lots of heresay and some harsh judgement. I’m not too interested in denigrating someone’s character without real facts.

Because there’s no media to ask one simple question to Boals during the week or after a game. The simple question is this…why is IJ not dressed. Is he hurt or is it an academic reason?

Follow up….If it’s academics, when will he be eligible to play and do you anticipate him back this season?

It’s not hard to ask that question, but it’s going to have to come from a student media member because we don’t have any media that covers this basketball team. So there is the problem. We are left to only guess on our part from what little we know on this board.

It’s ridiculous that we know nothing about the Izuma issue. If he played for Kansas, do you not think we would already know what the problem is? Zero media to ask a basic question to Boals. It’s pathetic.

He hasn't played since March of 2022. If it's not injury related, what exactly is the plan? Is he using a scholarship? I get that these are human beings but if academics are this big of an issue, why don't we bring in somebody else?
If he is on scholarship, and any portion of that is taxpayer funded, why does the public not have a right to know his status?

Because of laws! Every student in public schools is tax payer funded. You don't have a right to see their grades.

You have no right to know his status, especially if it is of a personal nature. If you feel you have a right, file a FOI request and let us know how that works for you.

I hope the state of Ohio starts emailing ohiocatfan1 every single time any student on an academic scholarship has a tummy ache.

It's his right to know, after all.

Did you get up on the wrong side of the bed? How about the media just asking Coach Boals the question until he answers it. Is he hurt? Is it a personal matter? It's not that difficult.

Ok genius. You obviously can't read or just choose not to. Coach can simply say it's a personal matter, if that's the case, and move on.

What you posted is a far cry from "the media can ask". You said "If he is on scholarship, and any portion of that is taxpayer funded, why does the public not have a right to know his status?"

As if his scholarship entitles us to know what's going on with him.
