Football is having no issues.

I would think that losing a very good kicker to another college like we did is a pretty big "issue".

Also, rereading the "transfer portal" thread we did take some other "hits".

It's money, pure and simple. It's a seller's market for big men and we got outbid by UAB for the kid out of Belmont, who by all accounts wanted to come to Athens...as long as we were in the ballpark financially.

This is what college sports has become.
With NIL's ,bidding for players is legal now.

But the more I read about the whole NIL situation ,it feels eerily familiar
with the 1994 movie " Blue Chips "
I'm not ready to call the process broken, because we are getting recruits. Football is having no issues. Perhaps we need to re-think our pitch. Even take a sort of "Last Chance U" type of angle. This may not be your forever home, but let us help you get to where you want to be.

We can't get your dad a tractor for his rural Indiana farm. We can't get your mom a house in Chicago, but we CAN get you to the NBA. We CAN get you to the SEC. We CAN get you to the ACC. We CAN get you to Europe if thats where you want to go. We CAN offer you stability in the coaching staff (maybe).

Western Michigan is offering you $15,000 in a duffle bag, but will you ever be heard from again?
If WMU is able to offer recruits $15000 and we aren't we probably wont be the better path to the NBA for much longer. Obviously, though, we have had what it took to get some other good transfers out of the portal so I don't know if that's a permanent issue with respect to other MAC schools. Someone would have to tell me.

If the process turns out to be bad for us and better for others I don't think that alone defines the process as broken.
Food for thought; let’s say WMU did offer $15K and we only offered $10K since we already allocated amounts to Ike and Shereef. WMU might also have a much smaller pool to pull from and “overpaid” to land someone like Javonte out of desperation and we chose not to match, so we can have the funds for internal players like EJ4/AJB long term.

Boals is a basically a GM playing in free agency now. Like professional teams, puts different values on different players.

Whatever this is, it ain't college athletics anymore. It's sort of semi-pro ball with a loose college affiliation. Academics seem even more optional than they used to be for student-athletes. The next step is to make our teams the Bobcats at Ohio University, rather the OHIO University Bobcats. just not sure for how long this paradigm will be operational.

Face it guys, our new big next year may just be Wiznitzer 2.0.

Please pass a little green Kool-Aid to FearLeon, otherwise his head just might explode! ;-)
I’m not panicking yet OCF, but check back with me on June 15th if we don’t have our big man signed. I might need some serious support if The Whiz is getting more than 4 minutes a game next season.
Got your back, FL!
Thank you OCF...I appreciate it.
Pray for The Whiz.
Pray for me.

We "keep" the entire starting offense and this guy is "talking" about the kicker.

Tremendous.

WR1 is from the "transfer portal" as well as WR2, and WR4/5, and TE3.

We lose 1 LB to the NAIA and a 6th year player to Illinois, while adding a half-dozen P5 transfers and you're talking about "hits".

Funny, when the news first broke, people on BA were just a bit
concerned.

Kickers can win or cost you games.

Is losing a kicker the end of the world ?

Not if they get a good replacement.

They don't ,and it is an issue, especially if you need a long FG at the
end of a game.

That was all about NIL money, but if you are a freshman and wanting money over every down players in a program with limited resources, we’ll probably better go elsewhere

Man, I wonder if the staff is confident in having GWiz step into a higher role, or somehow just not getting commits. It kind of boggles my mind how Javonte Brown chose Western Michigan over us. NIL reasons? Playing time?

I think it was the big NIL money from nearby Battle Creek to advertise Post Grape Nuts as the new "breakfast of champions"! ;-)

Javonte to WMU feels like a financial compensation situation but who knows. There are still guys left but we’re cutting it close.

We're definitely getting close as far as time with the team goes, wasn't the spain trip around July time last year?

Is there an *actual* deadline? Ideally before tip-off in November?

Maybe the biggest factor that we can't see because of the year off and not being in practice is IJ. Let's be real, we don't need a big man to necessarily do what Dwight did last year. We're going to be a guard/perimeter heavy team with Hunter, Brown, Brown, James, even AJ Clayton, etc... IJ is a big body and if he can stay on the floor (out of foul trouble), maybe he's all we really need with Wiz as his backup.

And maybe I'm trying to convince myself not to worry too much?

Who was the latest signing we've had in recent memory that turned out to be a stud? I know it's been mentioned several times. I wanna say Tillman was a late sign.

IJ averaged 1.6ppg; 1.2 boards a game; 47% FT shooter

What has he shown that would indicate being a starter at even an NAIA school?

Size, athleticism, rebounding and defense.

NAIA? Let's not be silly. He may not ever turn into a starter or world-beater here, but in limited minutes as a freshman he looked like he belonged.

Well, he kinda sorta "looks" like a D-1 basketball player.

Back in reality: 0.1 steals/game....0.3 blocks/game

Is that the super-mega defense? Lots of NAIA players have the "look."

People on here used to act like Ellis Dozier was the next incarnation of Kevin Durant. You see how that turned out.

Isaiah Carr to Denver and we’re not in Brandon Walker’s top 3. Without knowing who the third visitor was a a few weeks back, I’m not sure who else we’re connected to now besides the Cal Poly kid.

So in his 6 minutes/game as a true freshman off the bench you've diagnosed his entire career path? Nice.

Devaughn Washington averaged less than 1 PPG his freshman year. 15 years later, he's still playing pro ball.

I think there’s a few of us on this board that need to learn to be more patient with the development of players. Not every incoming recruit is going to be great or even good right away, especially big men who can sometimes take 2-3 years to prosper.

None of us have a clue how IJ will look this season because it’s been over a year since any of us have watched him play. He could be much improved or he could still struggle but there’s no point making definitive proclamations about his game right now.

I was optimistic that Ezuma had some upside as a freshman but we’ll see. We all want Boals to add another talented big man to the rotation but I think it’s time to accept that regardless of who we’ll eventually add, it’s likely that Wiz and Ezuma will be part of their plan unless they add a solid forward that we’re currently unaware that they’re targeting.

GWiz and IJ...I'm very worried about that. I mean they both have some similar qualities.

I remember when "bull in a china shop" was used on this board to describe IJ's game...
