The Wiz is underappreciated
It's amazing to me how much people have gotten into The Wiz. I think this was a case where people thought he'd come in and average a double-double. Dude was playing his first real college minutes this year and Boals still has time to develop him. He will be just fine. Will he ever be a dominating center? Probably not. But he's definitely salvagable for 10 to 15 minutes per game. I think by the time he graduates he can be an 8 and 5 or 8 and 6 kind of guy. I'm ok with that.
Agree with this. He's not going to be a DW3 but he can play good minutes if needed. Yes he was rough to start the year but the dude only played 41 minutes combined in two years at Louisville, which can lead to some rust. I saw the guy completely lock down Freeman and frustrate the hell out of him - I'm remaining hopeful that this year is a pass and with a summer of work he will be just fine next year.
I'd love to see it. Nothing makes me happier from a personnel perspective than seeing a kid grow and develop into a stronger player. In this transfer portal era, programs like ours will need to do that to keep continuity. Boals doesn't have proven track record of doing this either (maybe except for Miles Brown?).
But...
The dude was lost on the court for most of the season. The rare times when he'd play with some gusto, he'd make a big mistake. Otherwise, he was the most timid player on the floor. I've never seen a coach more demonstrative towards their own player during a game than Boals was towards Gabe.
He never strung 2 decent games together and actually regressed as the season went on.

As my grandmother would say, woof.
