I welcome him, but guess I am missing how this moves the needle as far as talent goes on this team. Wonder if we will see one more corresponding departure after all the PG playing time is now taken.
You don’t want a Big East caliber PG coming off the bench? Guard play wins in March. We’ve got great depth. Portal season isn’t over.
7.4 minutes a game after four years in the program and 1.8 pts per game. Again, welcome him, but lets lower our expectations a bit.

Count me in as all in on Mitchell. I think the bigger question now is what does this mean for Sheldon? It was quite obvious that he was nowhere near being ready as a freshman. This pretty much takes him out of the rotation in my opinion as a sophomore. Not sure if he redshirts or looks to go somewhere else at this point. Clearly the coaching staff felt like we needed better protection behind Hunter next year. And the answer wasn’t Sheldon.

Correct.

I mean if there was complete trust in Sheldon, Shereef isn’t a Bobcat. Now if we can land Myles Foster and a big in the middle…I think we’ll be happy.

I don’t think anyone’s expectations are unrealistic. We need post help and we added a P5 caliber PG off the bench. We’ll take it as a piece to the puzzle. Like I said, portal season isn’t over.

We shall see how this works out, but compared to previous transfers, not in the same league numbers wise. Just saying.

Comments I found from Creighton fans:

"I was hoping he would go with University of Nebraska Omaha so I could still catch some of his games. He’s great on defense and should improve offensively with an expanded role. Ohio landed a good one!"

"I hope he has a ton of success. Represents Omaha so well and his family is huge in the youth basketball scene in town. Easiest kid to cheer for"

"injuries were an issue for him never taking the starting spot. Then Nembhard got recruited over him"

"Good for Shareef. Tough player but a bit undersized. I.hope he gets the opportunities he is looking for."

"Go Reef. One of my favorite players ever at Creighton. Was so fun to watch because he gave so much energy and effort."

Devon Baker came here with 1300 points and ended up being "meh." Bean Willis had a big profile and we all know how he did. Let's wait and see how Reef does on the floor.

Expectations were higher for both Baker and Bean imo. I can’t speak for everyone; but I’m just glad to have an experienced/Big East caliber PG coming off the bench. I looked at Shereef’s game log last year. In 4 games where he played 15 or more minutes, he was averaging 6.5ppg. So, there’s some upside with more PT and I think we’d all take that from Jaylin’s backup.

I was wondering this a few pages back. Shereef was brought in, we offered Myles Che, and we were interested in that NAIA PG. The staff went into this portal season looking for a better backup PG than Sheldon. Not sure what happens to him because his minutes are going to Shereef next season.

Yes...expectations much higher for Baker and Bean. Agree...you can't compare those two to Shereef.

I've been saying this for awhile. In the world of college basketball, coaches can't sit and wait 2-3 years for a guy to develop...especially a HS recruit. The portal has changed everything. I hope Sheldon can still succeed here, but it seems clear to me it most likely won't happen for him in Athens moving forward.

This may come to a shock to some, but Creighton... different caliber of basketball. Big East... strength of schedule, slighty higher than the MAC.

UConn has bench players too. It doesn't mean they can't play.

Someone who has won almost 100 games, played in a Sweet 16, an Elite 8... like Wiglusz, they have different expectations, they've seen how elite teams practice and play. At worst, we just brought in senior leadership who has seen it all.

The former Nebraska player of the year didn't forget how to shoot a basketball. He's just been stuck behind Elite 8 rotations.

Baker is a good bench player, no need to put him down. He saved our bacon in several games this year.

Nobody is putting him down, but the guy was benched midway through the season and he had a great run over the last 14 days. Everything before that was..."meh". We can all safely say we were expecting more production out of Baker over a 32 game season than what we got.

While Shereef is a 6'0 PG, and we already have Hunter, I understand the immediate expectation of "backup PG". And that might be exactly true. But I'm also not discounting the possibility that he either starts alongside Hunter, or even as a bench guy gets significant (15-22) minutes per game.

Whether he's a backup or rotational guy, as a PG, and given this teams weaknesses/struggles - I'm not worried about his scoring average. What I want to see is a) His ability to run the offense and create open shots for others (Ast per 40) b) His ability not to turn it over (Ast:TO) c) His defense - something we SEVERELY lack, something he'll understand from playing at Creighton and against Big East every night, and one of his stated positives (DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE HOW IMPORTANT OF A DIFFERENCE THIS COULD MAKE) (Def Rating) and lastly d) His ability to rebound.

He's athletic enough that at the MAC level I think he can drive and create his own shot when needed as well.

We still need some freaking size to be sure, but I like the add nonetheless.

*Edit - started a specific thread for Mitchell on recruiting board as we continue other portal discussions here.

From what I'm reading here and elsewhere about Mitchell's defensive ability and his energy level, I'm wondering if he might be a Treg Setty 2.0. That is, a guy who comes in and immediately increases the intensity on the court. When Treg was in the game, every other player played with more intensity. There were times last year when we needed someone like that. I do think that Mitchell will probably get more total playing time than Treg and may have more overall talent, but he might be the same kind of catalyst type of player. Just one man's guess.

For several here, only March matters.
BAKER was a fantastic Bobcat when it counted most. Steals, mid range jumpers late in the clock and threes. If Zips would have had him for March, they, not Kent would have been dancing.

As for 'Reef. I get all giddy when the fans love his DEFENSE.

Here's what jump off the page to me about Mitchell.

His second season at Creighton, 36.4% from three, 74% FT line and 83 the next, 22 steals and 46 assists (not bad for a bench guy). His playing time was actually in the mid-teens his first three years.

Now, if he is friends with Mason Miller, the 6-8 forward at Creighton who is the son of former SEC player of the year and NBA veteran Mike Miller, that would be a great pickup of an under-used guy. And has 3 years of eligibility left.

Shereef Mitchell is a strong addition to the program. I understand Ohio already has a group of talented guards but he's going to see the court a bunch.

Mitchell didn't transfer to OU to play sparingly. I would venture to guess he'll see 20+ minutes a game and be a decent contributor on both sides of the court.

I don't care if he starts or is the first person off the bench. An addition like this allows Boals to play the hot hand and play four guard lineups if that's something he wants to explore.

Mitchell is a former top 250 recruit. We've seen guards with limited production at power programs come to the MAC and have great success. It's too early to project how he'll fit in but I'm excited about this addition.

I believe Ohio is going to be a Top 100 team next year with an even higher upside depending on the development of Brown/James and if they can land Myles Foster.
