Would anyone argue that this UMass team might be better on the offensive end than O$U? Despite the defensive struggles for Ohio, I was impressed with the top 7 guys that UMass had offensively speaking. All were offense threats.
Hard to tell with all the fouls during the OSU game.

I would agree with this.

In the end, certain things didn't go our way, and we could have won, because we are a good team. But I was much more impressed with UMASS than tOSU. They were solid, top to bottom. #34 Putney had a shot like I've never seen. Whole team was great.

Agreed. But this makes me give UMASS more credit.

Anyone get a good look at Setty's intentional? (anyone besides you-know-who) What happened there?

I'd forgotten about that foul.  Was it intentional?  They never awarded free throws, just the ball, which confused me.  I never believed that officials could look at the monitor to award an intentional/flagrant unless they'd already awarded a foul to begin with.  I found it odd they stopped the game, awarded a foul, and no shots were taken.

From what Rob and Russ said, they originally called it intentional then after looking at the monitor took that call away and just made it a normal foul.

What did Setty do? I didn't see it.

Another thing we talking about were the "handles" that Chaz Williams has.  Went in between guys on a couple occasions and made it look pretty effortless.

Like I said in prior post - they were QUICK, and DECISIVE.

We have that capability - just need to execute that way more often.

In real time, it looked like the swung his arm into the midsection of the UMass player. I didn't see any replays, but obviously they reconsidered based on what the video showed, so it must not have been exactly what I thought I saw.

I think they got tangled up a bit running down the court and Treg shook him off a little too intensely.

we tied them on 1 pointers and 2 pointers, they hit four more 3 pointers and there you have it.

On to Richmond...

This game wasn't as close as the final score indicted. Umass maintained a 9-15 point lead pretty much though out. Ohio got yo with 6 at 53-47 with 16min left but UMass went on a 9-0 run after and it was all but over. Ohio drained  a few late min threes to make it closer on the scoreboard but anyone watching the game woudl have left knowing who the better team was from tip off to final buzzer.  Umass is a top flight team this year and Ohio should be happy they had them at home this year.

Ahhh yes, at home in the Convo...where the banners hanging in our rafters are actually recognized by the NCAA.

Country has a point here.  You really need 7 good and consistent offensive performers night in and night out. Right now once you get past 3/4 we are not good enough offensively every night to compete with a team like UMASS.  And, I also agree with others, watching the game, I never thought we had a chance.  They are a very good team.

I agree..from start to finish..never had the feeling we had a chance. When they were up 6..it still felt like 12. This team doesn't have enough scorers. Huge opportunity lost as Jim Christian still searches for a signature win as OHIO head coach....now 44 games in.  I'm not counting beating ranked Akron at home last year...we should always expect to beat Akron at home.

I'm not sure how the coach missed out on an opportunity for a "signature win". I watched the practices leading up to the game and the major points of emphasis weren't followed through on.  He wanted to value the ball on offense so it would not lead out to UMass fast breaks.  The 2nd possession Stevie jacks up a 25 footer off one pass.  He was shooting 15% at the time from 3.  Ridiculous.  Ric misses 4 FTs.  Campbell takes an absurd 3.  TJ and Kellogg missed open 3s.  Defensively, if you remember twice in a row off of OU scores they give up consecutive dunks because the players weren't all in the same defense.  An emphasis on ball screen defense was screwed up by Bean and others.  I know that ultimately in every sport the responsibility lies with the head coach, as it should, but the players need to stay with the game plan.  Nick Kellogg was awful defensively.  He almost never gets in the paint from the weakside...If the team wasn't prepared, I'd blame Christian, too.  That just wasn't the case this time.

That's okay, it took Groce 67 games to get his signature - 60 if you want to count Wright State in the Bracketbuster - but that was a home game and we should always expect to win that game at home.

Good post. That loss was thanks to a great UMass team and from missing both good and bad shots.

I like JC, and I think I know what he's up to when he plays freshmen a bunch of minutes and keeps tinkering with the PG position. My guess is that he's fine-tuning the team for MAC play and beyond, but it's frustrating as a fan. PG has been problematic and our freshmen have really looked like freshmen thus far. I hope the strategy pays off later, but it seems like our best possible five are not out there a lot of the time every game (even when accounting for foul trouble). The dual point guards feels like a quarterback controversy. The guy who's playing always seems tight because he's worried about being pulled after a bad play. For whatever reason, neither Bean nor ST have looked comfortable for most of the season, and Wednesday was no different. I don't have high hopes for Richmond, but I don't think we'll really know what we have in this team until MAC play is in full swing.

Not that I'm writing off this year, because I think we can have a very good year, but I was left wondering what this game would have been like with both Owens and N'dour out on the floor together.  That combo is going to give us size and length that we haven't had in a long time.  As a Cub fan, I'm used to saying "wait until next year," but I usually wait until the end of the current season!

GOt to love when the fans of a team that is OK every couple of decades get behind the wave of success and come trolling on other boards. Stay Classy UMASS bandwagoners.

We give you a home game vs a team coming off a Sweet 16 season and we get a game vs a team that hasn't danced since Lewinsky was an intern. UMass should be the happy one, not Ohio.

btw, "top flight" teams score more than 55 points against Florida State. Like UT-Martin, for example.

Face reality. U Mass beat us. Deal with it. Living in denial accomplishes nothing.

How many team does we, the MAC, send to NCAA each year?

The Atlantic 10 Conference saw a record five teams play in the NCAA tournament in 2013, with every single team advancing to at least the Round of 32.

Any more intelligent comments?????

In case you can't do the math UT-Martin lost by 28 points. Who cares how many points were scored by the LOSING team?

where did I deny the outcome?

You're absolutely right- UMass comes from a league that hands out multiple bids every year, including as many as 5 last year, and still they have not been to the dance in 15 YEARS. Why should I be impressed? Meanwhile the MAC is a 1 bid league and Ohio has gone 3 TIMES in that time frame. Thank you for proving my point.

I would ask if you had any more intelligent comments buts its obvious you're not up for the task.

Is this how I'm supposed to use gratuitous punctuation??????????

UMass is good.  We are better than we had a right to expect given all the losses from graduation and the new faces that we have.

Game was never much in doubt toward the end.  We gave up too many fast break opps, leading to straight on hoops for them or leaving us in 'scramble defense' mode.  We do need to get more All-MAC caliber players and we lack size.

But I like this team, this team's fight.

I'd rather root for a team that gets the most from its talent (hello Jon Smith) than one that doesn't appear to play up to its potential.
