This very board says consistently nastier things about the MAC than their board did.

I enjoy most of your contributions, but your reaction to a little confidence on their board still doesn't make much sense to me.

greetings all.

I am the notorious poster from umasshoops who attended your beautiful ohio university for my freshman and sophomore year, and lived in the convo year one (to this day remains the best year of my life).

To explain a little... I was born and raised about ten minutes from umass campus, my parents bought season tickets every year for the whole family, and the first year I can clearly remember in entirety was the camby/calipari final four year.  I was 8 years old and impressionable at the time, what can I say, they got me young.

re my comment about living in the convo and still not going to games.. it's unfortunately true, but I do know OU has a great student fan-base and I believe another poster acknowledged you do one of the greatest winning-team losing-team chants in D-1.  I didn't mean to discount the whole fan base but I honestly didn't expect any OU fans to be scouring the board that deeply and if I offended you I apologize.

Also, our fans as a whole are taking the game very seriously and look at it as one of our toughest road games of the year.  As fans of an undefeated team we are confident (how can you not be?) but by no means are we considering it a pushover.

I did indeed transfer back to umass after my sophomore year but it was for family reasons, not any displeasure with OU education wise or socially wise.  The two years I spent in Athens are to this day probably the most fun I will ever have.  I root for the bobcats every game besides this one and was jumping up and down in my living room when you made the sweet 16.

And to everyone hating on skippers.. or what used to be skippers... im a bit older now and was thinking of a place to get some good food as well as some drinks, not the rowdy bars on the main drag that might be too much for my 30-something co-posters.  Alas i guess skippers is closed.  I recall they used to play F***k her gently every night at closing time which I thought was a nice touch.

So in sum, I hope you all arent too sour towards me.  I really do wish you the best of luck in every game outside of this one and athens will always have a soft place in my heart.  I still have a crush on a girl I met in the convo that magical year.  cheers!

thought the exaggerated use of #%#%# would indicate the spirit with which my rant was to be intended.

Skipper's sucked, but the good news is that you can return to the very spot you misremember so fondly. It's been replaced by Jackie O's, one of the best microbreweries in the state. They have an excellent, broad and creative beer selection and very good food (I recommend the pizza or the locally raised dry-aged beef, available both in burgers and steaks). I'll be there before the game and I'm guessing a number of other posters on here will be as well. It's also one of the closest bars to the Convo, but that's just a bonus.

And don't forget the cheese curds/blobs. Awesome. And the pizza (and beer of course) are fantastic too. I guess I've (mostly) graduated from BW3...

Since we are discussing establishments on Union St. I am curious what happened to the Sundry after Paul passed away? I lived on top of it a long time ago.

Not sure. Pauls brother Ray was my fraternity Advisor when I was in school. I think its just vacant but im not 100% on that. There is also the Union right there which is a real cheap place to get a drink

Here is the stats view of the game. There is also a compare feature.
minutemenreport.com/massachusetts-basketball/game-preview/no-22-massachusetts-9-0-vs-ohio-7-2

StatSmack! Massachusetts is better than Ohio
  • Property crime happens more often per capita in Athens so you better protect your valuables if you visit (when compared to Amherst -- according to the FBI).
  • Massachusetts has more wins against the RPI Top 50 than Ohio this season (two vs. zero).
  • Massachusetts has a stronger schedule than Ohio this season (SOS Rank: No. 81 vs. No. 151).
  • The Massachusetts scoring leader (Chaz Williams, 510 points) has more points than the Ohio scoring leader (D.J Cooper, 480 points).

You guys are pretty quite. Must all be tucked in or hen picked.

OK, if you got your degree from UMass, you are rooting for the correct team.  I incorrectly assumed you disowned your alma mater.  My only beef with you now is that you didn't go to the games while there despite being a college basketball fan.  That literally blows my mind.

I dont understand the last post about DJ. Coop was a 2000 point scorer, and he graduated. Is this referring to the total number of points scored last year?

you know what, @$#% UMass and their ignorant fans. Spot on in comparing their delusional arrogance to Temple. Who do they think they are??

They're in a multi-bid league and haven't danced in 15 years and we're in a 1 bid league and have danced 3 times since then and have been to a Sweet 16?! Sorry losers, but Marcus Camby left the building a looong time ago. Your conference handed out FIVE bids last year and you couldn't earn one? #$%@ you.

I'm amazed at how uninformed and down right ignorant their fan base is.

And its not just that many of them sound like a bunch of arrogant pricks, they do, its how uninformed they are in their arrogance. They have some things to be excited about, sure, good for them, but get over yourselves talking about us like that.

I need to hold the shift key down and punch a bunch of numbers and them I'm through for now.

@#@#%##@^*^%$%$%# UMass.

Also, Ohio finished 73rd in attendance (out of 351)throughout all of Division 1 last year with an average of 6932. Massachusetts? Not even in the top 100. Game over

Hear you about Cooper. We all know that attendance is a trailing indicator. You went to the sweet sixteen 2 years ago and we haven't in 15 years. Any how do not look at the stats too often, first time this year. General look how big a team is for match-ups and style of play. Should be a good game. Hopefully we don't crash the streaming feed.  Take Care.

We have always had big attendance, especially compared to our MAC bretheren. I wish this could be a regular series, these are fairly evenly matched programs and I want more quality opponents in Athens. Its always an uphill battle to get anyone to come here, especially since the quote unquote "big boys" (Ohio State, UC) dont travel much within the state. If this game was played with students in town we would be close to a sell out with this (Convo seats 13k). The only other "name" opponent on our home schedule so far was Northern Iowa and we got roughly 11,500 or so for that game. It should still be a pretty good atmosphere, Im looking forward to going to the game for sure.

I'd like to see UMass and Ohio partner up for an annual rivalry weekend. Schedule a football game and a men's bball game between the two schools in the same town on a Saturday in November, play the football game from 1-4, have a friendly battle of the bands in the basketball arena between the two best bands in the MAC and two of the best bands in the country, from 5-6, then play the bball game from 7-9.

Arrange it so both football teams attend the game, the visiting team would then have 75 football players and 225 band members in the visitors section- that would be a rowdy basketball game. Would take a lot of work to coordinate but could be a fun day.

Personally, I think this would be a fantastic idea for November basketball in general.

Glad to see some UMass fans on our board.  Good luck this season except for tonight.

You guys have a good program and a foundation to really be a contender in a strong A-10 league for years to come.

This will only be UMass' second true road game of the year.  In their first one (EMU) they struggled before pulling away late.

One key IMO tonight will be controlling Chaz Williams.  A lot will depend on how the refs are calling the game.  If they don't reward players for driving and jumping into defenders we might be okay.  If they call it like they did the OSU game we could be in big trouble because Williams will be at the line all day long and our bigs will be sitting on the bench.  The turn on that is that the Minutemen only use a 7 man rotation typically so if they are calling it tight then we might get them in trouble if Stevie, Bean, Ric and Nic decide to take it to the hole.

The other key will be keeping them off the offensive boards.  Easier said than done though.   After struggling in that area earlier in the year we've done a much better job of late but UMass really crashes the offensive boards.  Cady Lalanne along is averaging 5 offensive rebounds a game.

Agree with OUVan re:  stopping dribble penetration, especially by Chaz Williams.  If he's effective and gets a lot of calls his way, it will make things really tough on the Bobcats.

UMass has a decided height advantage.  Although UMass's big guys can run well, I still think that a key will be for Ohio to get out in transition and get some easy baskets off steals and turnovers.  I think it will be hard to grind it out in the half court on this team.

UMass's stat sheet is impressive across the board.  Remember that this comes against a pretty tough schedule. It honestly is hard to find any vulnerabilities with UMass.  Ohio just has to play a darn good ball game to win this one.

I expect a decent but not large crowd due to time of year.  I hope those in attendance actually make some noise.

Good Morning Ohio,

Very excited for the challenge tonight.  Most knowledgeable UMass fans have had this one down all season as among the toughest games we'll play, and we have a pretty strong schedule this year.

What you'll see from us is a pretty short rotation - but we have 7 guys capable of leading us on a  given night.

Chaz is exactly what you expect - a very dynamic player who pushes tempo whenever possible.  He is creative in the open court, throws a lot of lobs to Putney and Esho on the break, can get to the hoop at will with these new rules, and hit the three.  He is prone to turnovers as he plays too fast and forces things occasionally, though there has been less of that this year.

Cady Lalanne is big and skilled, though still improving.  He was injured for a couple of years and is breaking out this year after a healthy offseason.  As you've mentioned, he is strong on the offensive boards, and uses his size well.  He is a decent shot blocker as well.  He is foul prone at times, especially against quicker bigs.

Sampson Carter is a fifth year senior, also healthy for the first time in a few years,  Not terribly athletic, but very skilled for a PF.  Can shoot the open three and take bigger guys off the dribble.

Putney is the wildcard on UMass.  He is a unique player.  He is tall, about 6'9", but extremely thin.  He is a streaky three point shooter, and if he's on it's difficult to stop because he shoots it from so high and has great range.  He is dangerous in the open floor as well, with many highlight reel plays over the years.  He is inconsistent however.  Not a great defender (though his length is effective), rebounder, or passer, and somewhat fragile mentally.  Many UMass fans will tell you that when he has a good game, we are very, very tough to beat because the other guys are pretty consistent in what they bring.

Derek Gordon is a glue-guy, does lots of little things.  Expect him to try to keep Kellogg under control.  He is a very solid defender, rebounds well for his size, and is aggressive getting to the rim.  Not a great finisher or free throw shooter, though.

On the bench, Maxie Esho is a great sixth man, another unique player.  Very athletic and active, strong defender and rebounder, developing mid range game.  Looks awkward at times but is a very effective guy off the bench.

Trey Davis gets decent minutes, spelling Chaz or playing to one and pushing Chaz to the two.  Above average backup PG in my opinion.  A threat to score and solid all around.

We also play Tyler Bergantino, a big body who plays defense and rebounds, sets picks.  Not much else there, he is what he is and is decent.

We have 3 freshmen who haven't really cracked the rotation yet, though one guy, Clyde Santee, put up 13 points in 5 minutes during the blow out of UNI.

Chaz and Cady get a lot of attention, but we are a balanced team, mentally strong and experienced.  We prefer to play fast, press, and get into a frenetic paced game, but we can win in other ways, as we did at EMU and over Clemson in Charleston.  Turnovers and foul trouble are our Achilles Heel.

Hoping for an entertaining game, and a big road win for UMass at a difficult place to play!
