Silly (but perhaps honest) question: Is this the most no-name Division I team to step foot in the Convo?

I consider myself knowledgeable about academia as well as sports. But I had not heard of this school or knew where they were from.

FYI, it's located in Farmville, Virginia. Which does indeed sound like something made up for a movie.

North Carolina A & T would get my vote. At least Longwood spit out Jerome Kersey.also former OHIO assist during the Gary Trent years Jayson Gee is their coach.

5-8, but only one win against a DI school (TCU). They've played two DII schools, an NAIA DII school and a USCAA (?) school.

How did we find these guys? Did we have someone drop off the schedule late and added them at the last minute?

Hey guys, for those of you that know me, you remember that I am from bum-ass Virginia. Over half of my graduating class got in to Longwood, and I can give a very good breakdown of the team and how they're doing.

Longwood is located in Farmville, VA, not too far outside of Richmond. They play in the Big South, and last year made some noise in the conference tournament after having a terrible season. Earlier this season they had their first winning record in basketball ever when they started 2-1. They have a win away over TCU, so take from that what you will. Their mascot is the Lancer, and they are having a dispute with Liberty University over who gets to call themselves "LU". They play a very undisciplined style of ball, from what I saw earlier this season. Only one or two actual offensive ideas, but very much like Morgan State in the was that they play very individualistic ball. There's no one that really poses a threat, IMO.

I'm going to be confident. We should blow these guys out of the water by a fairly large margin. However, if we let them get confidence early, they can do to us what they did to TCU.

I have a friend from high school who is a manager for their basketball team, so I'll see if I can get him on here.

Looking at their stats the one thing that jumped out at me was not only four players averaging double figures, but they have a guy (Jeylani Dublin) who gets 11.6 pts a game on less than 20 minutes/game.  He's a 6-6, 225 forward who's their #3 scorer and #3 rebounder (4.8/game).  He leads the team with 33 offensive rebs.  They go small -- no one over 6-6 goes more than 15 minutes a game and the tallest guy with any playing time at all is only 6-7.  They have good FG (47%) and 3-pt (38%) percentages, but that could be a product of playing so many non-D1 teams.

Not only that, Liberty used to have a giant stone LU on a hill overlooking their campus: http://www.blackchristiannews.com/news/lu.jpg

After Longwood's complaints, it was switched to say "Liberty University".

Guys, I can give you a bit of history on Longwood too.  It's more like an Ashland or Findlay in that it was D2 until about 5-8 years ago.  However, academically it is probably better than the two above schools.  Very high on the list as a Southern Regional Public Institution.

Athletically, my sons played soccer there in the early 2000s.  They were in transition mode when they graduated. Other interesting fact is that it was an all women's institution until the late 70s (I believe that date is correct).  As stated before their most famous athletic grad is Kersey.  There was also a baseball player who was pretty good (played in the Olympics and for the Reds for a couple of seasons, an outfielder).  But I forget his name:)

Bottom line, we should kill them,. Their RPI is in the 300s.  If we don't beat 'em bad my son will have a field day at my expense!

Still, we will be there.  I'll be in green.  He'll be in blue!

Up until reading this thread, I had myself convinced Longwood was from California.  Not sure why and not sure why I was so sure in that I didn't inquire, it just sounded like a team from CA.  Just doesn't sound like a team from Virginia for some reason.

One thing good about being an Ohio fan, you really get educated on obscure college names and locations.  We play a ton of them each season that up until the point they get listed on our schedules, I've never heard of them. (not sure that's a good thing)

I can see this. IN a dark room huddled around a computer screen.....RP showing them how a real university broadcasts a game while OUr crack announcers make the call....the interwebs are incapable of showing how big the smile on my face is right now envisioning this. Make sure you get a second computer going and sign into the chat room.

1. Chat room?

2. One of the guys I went to high school with (Who will be viewing with us) is the Longwood radio announcer. They didn't have enough scratch to send them there. :D

Monday's weather will be perfect for this game, partly cloudy with a high just around freezing and absolutely no chance of precipitation. If it were March, we'd be harvesting maple sap and spending countless hours in Pappy's sugar shack refining seemingly useless sticky water into a golden nectar that a bald man from the Northeast once called "better than Mrs. Butterworth." I thought that was a bit tacky to take it to the gutter like that.

A lot of you kids don't know who Jayson Gee is. In 1993, Jayson came to Athens as an assistant to Larry Hunter and helped the Bobcats get over the hump and win a MAC championship. He left OU to be head coach at Charleston and did nothing but win there. He spent time at St. Bonaventure getting that deal turned around. Then Gary Waters hired him at Cleveland State because he needed a body double for local TV commercials. Jayson Gee could be coaching an Athletes In Action team and they'd win 20 games a year.

I'd say the head coach being a former standout at Ohio is the obvious reason.

The smallest and maybe the best gift I received for Christmas was Chromecast which will allow me to stream the games on my 65" TV instead of watching on my office computer.   Giggity!!!
