worst of all, vocalists who use this time to make a statement with their rendition of the song all bother me.

Alan: I will conceed that bowing heads may be a respectful time for some, just don't think it was the case here. I also don't like the vocalist giving their own rendition of the anthem. Strangely enough, while I won't name those who were disrespectful, our citizen from Senegal was not one that I had in mind in my original comment. In any event, just had to get it off my chest and do not want to take anything away from our come back victory with a loud Ohio contingent on hand that just made my day!

And speaking of respectful behavior, did anyone notice that the UNC Asheville team, coaches, staff and cheerleaders gathered at half court, faced their fans and sang their alma mater following the game.  Very cool and a good indication of a program that gets it.

In my road travels I have observed that there are a surprising number of schools that do this including Miami. No opinion on whether that means they get it.

And in my travels too to 28 states in the last 9 years, like you Tom I've seen the good, the bad and the ugly including Yale's Olympic Wall.  By "gets it" I simply meant to say that the kids that play realize the opportunity that they have been afforded.  My bet is that you and Tommy would agree to that and that's a very good thing.

I don't consider standing with head bowed to be disrespectful at all.

+1 Yeah, that seems fairly innocuous. Standing with a bowed head seems plenty respectful to me.

But I also have to side with Alan (a first? :) ) on the personal renditions. Just sing the song.

It seems that would be every time in your mind.

Direct from the US Flag Code as passed by Congress in the 1940's, proper ettiquette:

Title 36 United States Code: § 301. National Anthem.
(a) Designation. — The composition consisting of the words and music known as the Star-Spangled Banner is the national anthem.
(b) ConductDuringPlaying.—Duringarenditionofthenationalanthem—
(1) when the flag is displayed —
(A) all present except those in uniform should stand at attention facing the flag with the right hand over the heart;
(B) men not in uniform should remove their headdress with their right hand and hold the headdress at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart; and
(C) individuals in uniform should give the military salute at the first note of the anthem and maintain that position until the last note.
(2) When the flag is not displayed, all present should face toward the music and act in the same manner they would if the flag were displayed.

My son and I think there must be an actual running contest among the singers of the anthem in the Convo - who can do the longest version................

I like real military band versions - sharp, snappy, and quick.

I don't mind singers taking some liberties with it...most of the ones we have for basketball games in the Convo are (in my opinion) excellent.

This was maybe proper in the 1940s but I don't think has to be followed exactly. I'd also say all of these guidelines can be followed and someone still can be disrespectful. There are a lot of ways to show respect.

I'll be controversial: I think we overplay the Star Spangled Banner. Want people to show more respect during the anthem? Play it at events and moments of import. We've made it as ubiquitous and solemn as the 50-50 drawing and the air-powered t-shirt cannon.

(And that's how I made the National Anthem discussion sound like a millenia-old argument over how often communion should be received...)

Stellar rendition of the Anthem on a lone Trumpet prior to the Panthers game today. Nicely arrangement, jumped the octave and finished with style and panache. Crowd singing in the background. Stirring.
