There are some who have compared a trip to DeKalb, Illinois – home to Northern Illinois University – to the migration of the monarch butterfly. This is a fallacy, as a surprising majority of those who attempt the trip to DeKalb will live to see its end. Also, the monarch butterfly is not subject to tolls as it attempts to meander through the Land of Lincoln.

The trip this weekend may get a bit hairy. Cold weather will again take firm grip and a couple inches of snow may fall over the region. It will not keep you from getting there, but it will make a long drive even longer. There are benefits to this when considering you are traveling to a part of the country that absolutely revolves around food. It’s just not fair to contain a trip to Northern Illinois to a single day’s meal plan. When heading to a place steeped in deep dish pizza, hot dogs with vegetables on them, and seasoned beef sandwiches, you can’t cover it all with just a lunch and pre-game dinner. One must either have King Solomon’s wisdom or a hotel reservation in Naperville. When I think about a trip to NIU, I count myself fortunate to possess a high metabolic rate and a Diner’s Club card.

Mark Montgomery is ever so gradually improving the NIU program. Standing at 7-8 overall, he’s already improved on the pair of five-win seasons he started his tenure with. Kent State needed a 30-foot bomb in the last minute of regulation to force overtime in their Convocation Center on Wednesday night; otherwise the Huskies would be more than halfway to their previous MAC win totals as well.

NIU does it with defense. They are holding opponents to 64.6 points per game, including the sick 36 Bowling Green managed last weekend. They have only one player averaging double figures, and that’s Dontel Highsmith, who’s been lost for the season with a torn ACL. They have struggled to find their offensive identity since then. Darrell Bowie is going to crash the glass; he leads the team with 7.5 rebounds per game. They’re not going to shoot a lot from the perimeter; they are going to go at the basket and get to the line (43 foul shots taken against Kent). And that should be the biggest concern given the Bobcat tendency to foul.

Nice job, Fake Jeff.  Two additions:

You should mention that it's a long, boring drive.  Flat land and prairie all the way.

Also, I think Dekalb is the only major conference college town named after a brand of seed corn.

I like the windmills. Have been taking 74 out of Indy then up 39 lately to make this trip. I had planed on being in Rosemont on Friday and Saturday but willwait for tomorrow to see if I 69 and 65 are even open. those along with 70 were closed most of the day today with jack knifed semis on all 3. Additional bonus of going 74 is the opportunity to stop and see the entire OHIO staff in Champaign......and though you may find the drive boring....it is much nicer when it is done at close to or above triple digits speeds out there on the prarie. Not many gumballs on I 39.

If I get to go tomorrow ... I plan on finishing up my work..... avoiding Dekalb and getting back home to see the game on the couch with the better half.

I went to a football game in Champaign back in '08.  Having never been there, I thought it was a cool college town.  It seemed like never ending corn fields, then Champaign.  I enjoyed that trip.

Summertime isn't bad.  When the fields are full and green it's pretty nice.

But in the winter, when the fields are empty and all you see is miles and miles of white (or brown) miles and miles, it's a bit like Siberia.

Saw a post on the NIU board hoping they have 1,000 tomorrow. Apparently listed attendance Wednesday was 651.

There has never been much of a following for their BB program.
Therefore we won't have to be concerned about a roudy crowd taunting our boys.
Those of us watching on TV, computers will probably be able to hear a pin drop during the game.

During my year at NIU I lived across the feild from CHick Evans.....did not make many games....at tthat time I preferred to hit the local and Chicago/Aurora area games to walking across the feild

I do not know why heading over to the field house was not part of the culture (besides the fact that almost 80% of the student body heads home for the weekend). but now with the Convo way out on the west end of campus where it is the first structure the wind hits coming from somewhere in Iowa it makes it realy unpleasant for students to get to the game. I daresay the walk to the bars downtown is infinitely. more pleasurable in the winter.

It's not listed for ESPN 3 so mac-sports or the NIU website seem to be the places to go.

The seed is named after the town.

i saw on their message board that they haven't been streaming their games lately, but no one seemed to know why. They said the link on the MAC page was dead the last few games.

I think that Northern's defense will pack it in the lane and dare us to shoot perimeter shots. If so, we need to hit a few. We don't have to be red hot, but we can't go 3 for 20 IMO.

nine turnovers. we also gave up two offensive rebounds on missed free throws. Bobcats are a sleep a the wheel tonite.  Disgraceful effort by Ohio in that first half. No way to sugarcoat. Bobcats look like crap. Wake up taylor your the starting point its time you start playing like one. Willis is even worse. Hall please learn not to step out of bounds and not to travel. stupid errors a senior should not be making.

It looks like he was successful in the head from ass removal process.
