They had a least four cameras -- at least two above and two on the floor -- so I think they brought their own.

The brightness can be a matter of how the techies adjust the cameras.  Go to the Ohio portal and compare the BSU broadcast with the Akron broadcast.  The Akron video is a bit brighter, with some glare at center court.  Could be different directors or it could be that they thought the Akron video was too bright so they toned it down a bit for BSU.

I'm no expert, but I do know a little about lighting for camera work. The key metric is the amount of light at the floor level, regardless of the type of fixtures hanging from the ceiling. The room itself, distance from fixtures to the floor, number of fixtures, etc, all play a role.

From a pure impression standpoint, I have thought Ohio basketball games were "dimmer" than Tennessee basketball games, which are also now impacted by all black seating around the court coupled with much dimmer seat lighting. I'm not sure what, if any, impact that has on focusing the available light onto the floor. Maybe the floor just seems brighter. But the end result on TV appears much brighter than Ohio.

if you have someone on the floor pregame and do a white balance the camera should be fine if my friend the videographer and producer taught me correctly. I used to stand down on the floor as he zoomed each camera in on the 2 x 3 white card I was holding. I understand the contrast with the seats but IIRC correctly by white balancing at the floor level you should be ok. From still photography using black and white taking a meter reading off the floor and shooting at that exposure up top translates .....I do not know how the auto iris on the video gear compares to the slr cameras.

OTOH what many of us are talking about is the opaque screen that seemed to be over the picture as if they were shooting through a set of sheer curtains.  I do not know why that showed up both on the stretch internet and the firstrow feeds.

It was never present with the feeds until that time and from what I gather was not present on the espn3 feed.

still looking for answers.

I agree the camera will be fine using a white balance, but my point is in regards to the available contrast. Yes, the cameras when properly set up will deliver a good picture. My question is, does the Convo lighting provide adequate contrast for high-quality, high-definition TV?

In re your OTOH, if this is a one-time thing you are seeing, then we're probably talking about two different things. I have always noticed the Convo appears "dimmer" on TV broadcasts.

I don't know what the standard is for hi def 1080 type broadcast is or if there is a standardized measurement of lux or some similar scale that is present in the industry.

When the lights go down it is dim for a bit while they come back up there...if anyone has been there following the introductions (not sure what year we started that but it is pretty cool) they know how long it takes to come back up to bright.  On the floor walking around I find the COnvo as bright as any arena in the MAC that i can think of off the top of my head, the JAR and Savage being the closest.

In that past years we have been many places, Tulsa, Delaware, Maryland, Peoria,Ill State that come to mind that I do not think are much different on the floor with regard to brightness but see lots of TV action comparatively. Xavier may seem a bit brighter down low but they also have a better temp and much newer lighting that may be balanced for tv specifically. I do not think Dayton is appreciably different having been in that arena since it was built but they seem to do many games there with not problem. Ass Hall in Bloomington has always seemed dark on TV while Mich St has always seemed very bright in 2 arenas that I see often on TV. IN your contrast example...the new floor at Oregon has to give video guys absolute fits.

I know when Muncie Central and Milan met on the 50th anniversary  commemoration of the game that inspired the movie Hoosiers,  ESPN came in and replaced the lighting in the fieldhouse as it was much too dim for the telecast. The floor really pops out from the stadium that is illustrated quite well in this pic of a girls game on a very snowy night.

EDIT fixed link

Thanks for the link. Very nice arena, and lights make a huge difference. Agree there is probably some LUX standard. Would be interesting to know if the lights at the Convo are up to par.
