Ohio has to be the school to beat Ohio State in a major athletic event. Not only would it mean more to Ohio fans than anybody else, but it would matter nationally.

UC fans would disagree.

While I don't disagree with you saying that, I don't think it would mean more to them than it would to Ohio followers and also don't think it would mean as much nationally if UC beat Ohio State. Of course UC fans want to think that.

UC fans have a false sense of entitlement that was established back in the 50s-60s because of the Big O and because of the 90s with Huggs and because of their beloved two year BCS run with Brian Kelly to the BCS where they had "Buckeye State" t-shirts made using the Bearcat claw "C" to spell Buckeye. That doesn't make it any more of an accomplishment for them. What have they done since? X has owned that town in basketball. And Ohio State held a spring game in Cincinnati and filled Paul Brown Stadium just to rub it in their face on the football field. Ohio shares something else with Ohio State that UC doesn't.

Why would it matter nationally if Ohio beat OSU?  We aren't exactly Appalachian State.

You don't think those outside of Ohio who loathe Ohio State would love to jump all over that?

Jump all over what?  Did everyone outside of Pennsylvania that hates Penn State jump all over [whatever] when we beat them?

Which small school beat Florida this year?  Without looking, I don't even remember.

Nobody outside of Ohio fans would care after a few days.

Things big and small that O$U does with the name Ohio continue to cause material harm to our brand and institution. No other university in the country named after a state has to add a “U” before or after its name, but we still do after more than 200 years, lest we be confused with O$U. No other university with “state” in its name tries to shake the “state” moniker – most embrace it as a differentiator. Our unique situation sucks for branding and differentiation. From the time Ohio State was founded as Ohio A&M all the way up until the present, the school and its supporters have robbed us of our identity.

Every Ohio graduate has had to clarify where they went to school at some point, and that’s only partly due to athletic prominence. Anyone who cares about Ohio University should loathe Ohio State.

Ohio State was founded as Ohio A&M in 1870, 66 years after Ohio. Since Ohio State’s birth, it’s been ashamed of its name......Ohio State has long coveted Ohio University’s name. Before 1920, it tried to get the legislature to change its name to the University of Ohio while forcing Ohio University to change its name (an effort that was successfully thwarted). Their coveting, thievery and abuse of “Ohio” as it relates to athletics is ongoing. Ohio State even challenged Ohio University’s athletic trademark on “Ohio” in the 1990s and lost again.

So beautiful, almost brought a tear to my eye.  I think you even got thru to Oz a little bit.

Yeah, Oz's reasons for his A&M fandom are pretty brutal.

I also grew up rooting for A&M with my Dad. Chose to attend Ohio over a few other schools. Stopped watching A&M when I got to Athens but still slightly enjoyed when they won.

Saw the light around my sophomore year and faced the facts.

It's time to grow up and man up. Just because you attended your first game with your Dad doesn't mean you have to forever root for that team.

OZ stated "I didn't choose to attend Ohio because they had sports." I think this is a common flaw in the thinking of those who are Ohio alums but root for Ohio State... It isn't about the sports team. It is about the school. It is about Ohio University. I root for OHIO University, the school I chose to attend. The school I paid thousands of dollars to attend.

Screw the morals of who you root for... If you don't see how exclusive support of the school you paid thousands of dollars to attend is the only choice to make, I really don't feel I can have a reasonable conversation with you. We are talking about a thousand dollar investment in yourself.

JSF's signature nails it. When you chose to attend a college where you are going to live for a couple years of your life, you are making a statement about the type of person you are. The school will shape you in many ways. Support of something that influential on your life is the only logical choice.

Yeah, what kind of idiot chooses to attend a university because of their athletics? (aside from A&M and SEC students). Do Ohio grads who frontrun for A&M root for quality campus/dorm/academic upgrades for A&M, too? If so, that just doesn't make any sense.

Yes. It's either you get it, or you don't. I agree.

Ohio students/alum who root for A&M are the definition of fair weather fans.

+1  Correct history and well stated.

For the record, I've been alive for all five Ohio victories over Ohio State in basketball.  I especially remember the game at St. John's Arena that was the very first Ohio victory over the Evil Empire in 1969-70 by a 82-80 score.  And, I can tell you that after each and everyone of these victories Ohio State was taken down a peg and OHIO became better known.  It was so enjoyable each time to listen to the Cowtown media and hear all the excuses they would dream up trying to explain how an inferior OHIO team could have beaten the obviously superior Buckeyes.  This went on even in those cases where the Ohio State coaches and teams were magnanimous in their post game statements.  In all the world there is only one OHIO, and it's in Athens, Ohio -- not in Cowtown.

For that 1969-70 game I actually had a freshly minted A&M Master's Degree, having graduated in late August 1969.  I was, however, at that time safely back in Athens working on yet another degree from the real OHIO! And, for the record, when I was enrolled at the Big Farm, Ohio played a game there and I unabashedly rooted for the guys from Athens.  I also attended an OSU-Harvard basketball game that year and rooted for Harvard, because I had a close family friend who was playing for the Crimson.  I know all of this is borderline criminal in your book, but you'll just have love me the way I am.

I'm even more agitated about this whole OHIO/tO$U crap tonight. Thinking back to the game in Columbus. Why did we - so many Long Time members of the Bobcat Club, settle for the bull crap, couple rows from the top of that awful arena seats? Why did the OHIO ticket sales team not make it obviously apparent that the seats we were getting were TOTAL Crap? Make an issue of it. Two State of Ohio PUBLIC institutions. If they (tO$U) EVER come to the Convo again - then make sure it is CLEARLY stated to any tO$U supporter program that offers tickets - YOU WILL BE OVERPAYING FOR BULL CRAP SEATS IN THE RAFTERS OF THE CONVO - BUY THESE SEATS AND CHOOSE TO COME AT YOUR OWN RISK OF BEING SEVERELY DISAPPOINTED - YOU WOULD LIKELY MORE ENJOY WATCHING THE GAME ON TV MUCH MORE THAN BEING IN THE RAFTERS OF THE CONVO WISHING YOU HAD BINOCULARS.

Watching the Eastern Michigan game today I saw one guy in a Michigan hat and another guy in a Michigan State shirt. I guess Ohio is not the only state in which that happens.

To be fair, The Univ. of Michigan is literally down the street from Ypsilanti.  I think UM and EMU are only 8 miles apart.

Outstanding thread!   Up until I joined BA, I was always ambivalent towards OSU.  But over the last couple of years, and for the reasons so eloquently said by the posters, I despise OSU.

That being said, if someone such as Ozcat and others support OSU and Ohio, it's OK with me.  IMHO, it's none of my business.  I look at it this way, if anybody, even the man on the moon, is a fan of Ohio, they're a friend of mine, no matter who else they might support (except that freakin' institution in Oxford, OH!)

I know this is an old thread, but I thought my rant fit best here.  I live in metro Detroit.  Last Saturday I took my wife and kids to a Toledo Walleye hockey game (wore my "The Real O-H-I-O" t-shirt as I often do when traveling south of the state line).  I swear the P.A. played "Hang On Sloopy" half a dozen times during the game or between periods.  The worst part was, I didn't realize the A&M fans now do their "O... H... I... O" chant in time with the song, during the chorus (complete with Village People/YMCA-type arm jestures to spell the letters).  Is this something new?

The Toledo Rockets fight song was played zero times.

I shouldn't have been surprised, but it really reminded me of how ubiquitous the Wal-Mart alumni are down there.

They have been doing that spelling chant for years. Another great example of how the Goliath prospers at others expense.
