How long do we go on pretending the OP isn't an Oxford troll?

I suspect he's EDDIE from HawkTalk.

Alan: He's started multiple threads with the sole purpose of slagging Russ. Maybe you've missed them.

I'm reminded of Louis CK's thoughts on people who complain about their cell phone provider.

"Hate Verizon? Then make your own then. You go make one. Make your own network. Get some hubcaps and climb some trees. See how close yours is to perfect. Why would it be perfect? It is as good as it is. Why do we expect it to be f****** perfect all the f******** time? We are not contributing. We are not helping it to be perfect.  We don't even know what it is that's being involved. You have any idea what is involved taking your s*** that you said that no one ever needs to hear ever?"

sure i'd be happy to explain .... Danny Nee .... He served as head coach of the Ohio Bobcats men's basketball team for seven years (1980–1986), where he helped rebuild the program which had suffered through several losing seasons, and helped lead the team to two MAC Tournament titles (1983 and 1985), two NCAA Tournament appearances (1983 and 1985), and one National Invitation Tournament appearance (1986).

Let me get this straight:

#1: We might have a radio announcer who likes to hear the sound of his own voice?

#2: We might have a radio announcer who announces games and recaps of games?

#3: We might have a radio announcer who seems to be motivated to use attention getting/individual personality stamps of identity (i.e. unique and attention getting clothing choices) while promoting his/OUr employer institution?

Much ado about NADA!

The only question I have is this:

Did Russ get his lift in today?

On page 20 of the UMASSHOOPS thread regarding the OHIO/UMASS game, you see a post from a guy named Boston Bert.  That dude is Marc Bertrand, who is one of the personalities on the #1 rated afternoon drive time radio broadcast, a sports talk show that is simulcast on Comcast SportsNet Boston due to its success, and their radio station broadcasts the Celtics, Pats and Bruins.  He is also a regular contributor to Comcast's version of SportsCenter.  He is a UMASS alumnus and a broadcast professional in one of the top markets in the US.

Marc specifically comes on the thread to exclusively and specifically state how "terrific" he feels Russ is, and he had no prior knowledge of or relationship with Russ.  His comments are echoed by poster after poster in that thread stating how they all loved Russ' style and feel that he is a first class broadcaster.

Any one person can certainly choose to grind their own ax against anyone, but when you see a line of positive and unsolicited feedback like that, it tells me we are pretty damn lucky to have "The Voice."

I can form my own opinions, but it never hurts to have independent corroboration of what I thought I already believed.

After reading through all the comments I think it's important to note that what Danny's Knee is saying is actually a compliment. Personally, I think the best broadcasters have to possess some sort of 'quirkiness' to set them apart. Russ has some great pipes, there is no denying that - but so do a lot of broadcasters in the business. His vernacular is superb, which gives him an edge, but others have that too. But that hint of narcissism (which Danny's knee sort of suggested) - or perhaps you can call it arrogance - is something that can't be learned, taught or mimicked. It just comes natural and I too can hear it during some of his broadcasts of Bobcat games. BUT ... that is what makes him good, that is what sets him apart from others, and that is what makes him interesting. I will find myself listening to the game - but at the same time listening to what he will say next - and that my friends is what's called being entertained. Not sure you could ask for anything else from a sportscaster, who is already good at the 'play-by-play' aspect of his/her job.

I DON'T UNDERSTAND ALL THE OBJECTIONS TO RECAPS.  DOESN'T EVERY OTHER TEAM DO RECAPS HOW DO YOU FEED THE MEDIA BEAST AND KEEP THE FAN HAPPY WITHOUT THE RECAPS.  WHEN GUTENBERG INVENTED THE FREE PRESS DIDN'T HE USE EXCLUSIVELY RECAPS AND AREN'T RECAPS NECESSARY FOR THE ABILITY TO EDIT AND INHERENTLY SAFER AS A BUFFER AGAINST MALWARE AND TURNOVERS.
