Certainly fan censure if there was a  racial slur.  Player censure no matter what was said; cannot have players going wordpeace on people.

This^

I hope we can all agree on the above. I do.

My question is whether or not Smart should receive a larger suspension after alleging a racial slur that apparently did not happen? Did Smart really hear something? If so, ban the fan who said it for life. But there's no evidence that it happened. Orr denied it. Video doesn't show it. I would think (hope) that if something ever happened like that in the Convo, the good Bobcat fans nearby would call out the perpetrator of the slur.

Did Smart use the allegation as an excuse to justify his actions? If so, that's a very serious allegation to levy on someone. Going into the crowd is one serious issue. Making false racial slur allegations is another serious one.

Why would he claim that? Either it happened or it didn't.

Unless they had him wired like NFL films that's going to be a tough thing to prove. In the end a three game suspension in the middle of conference play is pretty significant.  This wasn't a Ron Artest-type of explosion where he was throwing haymakers.  My guess is that he was frustrated by the play that had just happened and possibly in a little pain and Orr had been jazzing him all game and he just snapped.

I agree Alan.  You certainly can't condone what he did, but sometimes fans deserve what they get.  Even if what he said wasn't racially motivated...what makes a 40-50 year old feel like they can verbally berate a teenager? I know the athletes are signing up for this when they take the court, but it still boggles my mind.  If a fan wouldn't say it to the guy at a bar, you shouldn't be yelling it to him at a game.  This guy had it coming plain and simple.

I would be extremely embarrassed if I were a fan of Texas Tech because of this clown but that still doesn't excuse Smart's actions.  Unless he threw something at Smart or made physical contact there is no excuse for going after him.   So what if he said something offensive?  Going after him is clearly not the way to handle it.  We are becoming a society of victims who are bending over backwards to be offended.  Why would Smart care what this arse-clown says or thinks.  Get over it.   That being said Texas Tech should boot his butt...but any punishment he is saddled with will only be temporary because if the coach and AD know who you are you are giving too much money to the school for them to give it up that easily.

My point is that fans think that just because they buy a ticket to a game, they can run their mouths without any consequence.  If people had to actually look someone in the face and say the stuff they do during a game...they would never do it.

This sort of approach is generally my train of thought at games and on social media.  I won't say I've never slipped up, but I sure wish more people would take this approach to what they say at games, or type on social media.

This is why I have minimum high regard for those who post via an alias here.  This board is generally very high quality...but would be better if people put their name to it.

Especially certain person or persons on the football thread who quite appear to have a strong tie (personally or via relationship) to the University or Athletics but won't state whether or not that is so.

I could change my handle to a name - say Felinus Verdes. How would you know if that is real or not?

1)  The point is personal responsibility for honor.  So, I'd hope that someone would not stoop to such games, would just use their real name.

2) I kinda assume that the mods have a way of knowing everyone's real name.  But that may be a misapprehension.

3)  If anyone wants to forward their posts to me for vetting before those posts are put up

Thank you for allowing the department of incipient-only thoughts to engage.
