Saw this on espn.com.  Interesting if you read the whole story and go the video from 2010.  Certainly can't condone what Marcus Smart did but does a ticket to the game allow a fan to do what this fan appears to have done?

I agree Alan.  You certainly can't condone what he did, but sometimes fans deserve what they get.  Even if what he said wasn't racially motivated...what makes a 40-50 year old feel like they can verbally berate a teenager? I know the athletes are signing up for this when they take the court, but it still boggles my mind.  If a fan wouldn't say it to the guy at a bar, you shouldn't be yelling it to him at a game.  This guy had it coming plain and simple.

A ticket is a license that can be revoked at any time.  But I haven't seen any fan ejected or even be called for a T against the home team unless he was throwing stuff on the court or physically trying to go after a player.  Player baiting is probably expected, to a point.  But if he in fact yelled a racial slur at Smart, Tech needs to think about the risk of offending its own players, coaches, cheerleaders and fans -- and maybe causing unwanted government scrutiny -- if it doesn't do something.

At half time of the Miami game a ref and a Policeman were looking for a "fan" to talk to him or throw him out.  Anybody else observe this?

There was a fan ejection from the Convo during the TOS era for something that fan said. No physical altercation, no throwing stuff, just a statement. Others could explain better.

...

I have always been big on the "sticks and stones" saying. Cannot let the fans rattle you, no matter what they say. That said, I really don't blame Smart for shoving the guy. Heat of the moment, he was surely mad and he was in a competitive environment. He clearly shoved the guy hard but I think it is a little overblown. It isn't like he started beating the crap out of the guy a la Ron Artest.

3 game suspension seems fair.

I think the conference and Texas Tech  need to look into this fan and see if it is a good idea allowing him back into the arena, but at the same time I really don't think banning a guy for words, no matter how mean and terrible they were, is something that should be done. At the same time, this could look very bad for Texas Tech. They are gonna have some tough choices considering this guy has been said to be a positive booster by many with the program.

Remind anyone of the Akron game several years ago? Fans dished it out and then were incensed when their favorite target nailed a game winner and gave it back.

It was that player's grandma that was the real issue.

I would be extremely embarrassed if I were a fan of Texas Tech because of this clown but that still doesn't excuse Smart's actions.  Unless he threw something at Smart or made physical contact there is no excuse for going after him.   So what if he said something offensive?  Going after him is clearly not the way to handle it.  We are becoming a society of victims who are bending over backwards to be offended.  Why would Smart care what this arse-clown says or thinks.  Get over it.   That being said Texas Tech should boot his butt...but any punishment he is saddled with will only be temporary because if the coach and AD know who you are you are giving too much money to the school for them to give it up that easily.

Here is the video tape and audio of the incident.  You can hear Jeff Orr yell "Piece of Crap" at 18 seconds of the tape.

My point is that fans think that just because they buy a ticket to a game, they can run their mouths without any consequence.  If people had to actually look someone in the face and say the stuff they do during a game...they would never do it.

My seats in the Convo come with an extra obligation to be a good fan. I've always tried to be a good fan, but not cross the line with players or officials. One reason is exactly what happened at Texas Tech last night. Another is that I don't want my kids to think its appropriate to act like an ass clown just because we are so close to the action. I think the fans in the Convo are really good. I rarely see anyone doing something that I'd classify as an embarrassment to the university.

I sure hope this isn't the start of a trend for each team to have its own "player vs. fan" incident; November, after all, will mark 10 years since that Pistons-Pacers brawl...

The fan seems to be an idiot.  But a player's only reaction should be a smile and a point to the scoreboard.

Thanks for posting, but if you can figure out anything from this video you are a better man than i.  Perhaps I need to run it in slowmo or something.

There was a high school coach at the other night who was mad because a student section was yelling the name of one of the opposition's players. I think they just picked a guy at random, but the coach thought it was going too far. No altercations, though.

Here's part of the story I still don't understand:

Smart claims Orr used a racial slur. Orr denies it and audio/video apparently confirms Orr did not.

So, did Orr hear it from another fan? If so, I would think other fans would call that fan out for that.

Or was Orr trying to justify his reaction by making that claim?

No matter what happened, it's not good.

This is sorta from left field. IMO, it's possible that TTU doctored that video, possibly editing out a slur and adding "piece of crap." What incentive do they have in posting that video to their YT page?

Something seems weird. To confront a fan who only calls you a "piece of crap" seems real unlikely. Though, in the heat of a game, especially after taking a hard fall, anything is possible.

Smart should have ignored it. Gonna tell me what the Orr dude said was as bad or worse than any other in game opposing team trash talk? Some suspension likely inevitable.

If that Orr dude is just an outright jerk, yelling inappropriate or extreme comments, and consistently has been doing so for years as some have tweeted, then those around him should "man up" out of their own institutional pride and let him know to his face. Or, if necessary, get the TTech venue event staff involved. He might change his act if TTech or venue security stood next or near to him staring him down at every game.............

Well, I listened again and heard the phrase "piece of crap" but only because I was listening for those exact words.  This does not seem to me to be definitive of much of anything.  You can't tell who said those words or exactly what it was in reaction to.  Perhaps, a good audio technician could isolate those words and do voice recognition, assuming he had a sample of the likely perps voice.  But, I tend to think that this much ado over nothing.

I'm not at all condoning what the fan did; we may never really know what was said.  But Smart needs to grow up quite a bit if he wants to make it in the NBA.  First his chair-kicking and now this.  I know he's frustrated over what's happened the last six games, but for the vast majority of 20-year-olds, frustration is a full-time part of the NBA (except maybe for LeBron).  He should take at least another year to mature before moving on.

If "piece of crap" was the only thing said, I would agree. But a racial issue was brought into this.

If a racial slur was used or if there is an unsubstantiated claim of one being used -- in either case -- this cannot slide. Either Orr should be given a lifetime ban from games or Smart should be suspended longer for making a false claim like this.

So it doesn't matter if the slur was used, only if there was a claim it was used? Are you serious?

Certainly fan censure if there was a  racial slur.  Player censure no matter what was said; cannot have players going wordpeace on people.
