I have said it before… Seems like everybody on this team wants the ball in their hands so they can dribble. None of them want to play defense. And, Four times the first person to touch the ball, dribbles the length of the court and tries a lay up under pressure. Not one pass. Just way too many poor possessions.

And going 98 MPH to the rim every time down the length of the court to the hoop and the shots flying off backboards. This is just horrible to watch.

Shareef has been reading our messages on the sideline.

Anyone have a clue who is sitting next to AJB on the bench?
White guy with shaggy hair is Nicol.

Corn rows with the ipad? Pretty sure that's a student manager.

One thing I've noticed is we absolutely don't sell the plays.

I've watched numerous times, we set a slow pick and roll and Wiz doesn't even look back for the ball. Sheldon just did it also... he set a "pick" and rolled to the hoop and there wasn't a human within 42 feet of him. I could've had the worlds easiest two. Hunter didn't seem to even look to him anyway and just passed it around the perimeter. I'm guessing the play was just that - pass it around the perimeter until someone gets open for 3... Hadaway. Miss.

Edit*

I’m not advocating for more Wiz shots… but it would be nice if he even looked like a decoy. Same with Sheldon. Saw Hadaway run through a pick down low and not even look up. We really have zero inside presence. Our starting 4/5 had 4 rebounds combined and went 3/8 from 3. Teams can tell who is a threat and who is not.

Maybe if we ran these plays with a little more gusto, a little better sell job and actually looked to score and looked for the ball rather than simply running the play for X we would win a couple more games.

Ha ha, the game is easier when you’re making shots.

Well… at least we know we’re not at the bottom of the MAC.

Nice to see the guards pick up the rebounding slack.

Hunter and Mitchell both with 6 assists…

Solid effort. Just wish we had *anyone* down low to be a threat to score. I’m not mad at AJC, he finds ways to score, but like I said earlier teams aren’t even pretending to play defense inside because we’re not even pretending to want to score.

Have to start somewhere, but keep in mind, NIU was missing two of its best players. I need to see if Jaylin can finally get back to where he was last two months of last season. Baby steps.

Can Cornish get in the weight room and put on some upper body?

His % from three is over 35 now, not a disaster.

7.5 favorites.

Make it make sense.

Ohio is 3-8 against the spread.

It’s like Vegas hasn’t caught up yet on what is going on in Athens.
The metrics still like Ohio compared to the majority of the MAC. Vegas uses those to come up with their lines. It's not that the oddsmakers think OU is good. It's that they think the rest of the conference is awful.

To put into perspective, we're the 4th ranked team in the MAC in KenPom at 168. The next closest team is Bowling Green and they're 220th.

What's even scarier is that we have the 3rd ranked offensive efficiency in the MAC and are ranked 109th in the country out of 362 teams. Akron, Toledo and Kent are the only teams in the MAC in the top 125. NIU is the next highest offensive efficiency team at 192.

If we could shoot, we would be dangerous. Is it confidence or lack of technique? Whatever we won’t start winning until our opponents stop outshooting us.
I’m beginning to feel superstitious. Whenever I make a pronouncement, these guys turn around and make me look silly. The second half wasn’t a work of art but we definitely made more shots and improved our game percentage a lot. The next thing we need is consistency.

Decen1t first half, much better second half. Finally dishing some dimes -- 19 assists on 28 FGs, over 60%. 51% from the field, 41% from three, 81% FTs and a 35-32 rebounding edge. Just eight turnovers to NIU's nine. This was against the #6 NAC team in NET rankings (235); Ohio is #5 at 221. Still don't have the impression that someone on the floor is taking command. Seems like there's a lot of dribbling and passing with hopes that somebody gets open. Next up we're at #4 BG (188). We'll probably need similar stats but I'm not sure we can get them without a floor general.

Yes, I said, Sheldon is starting to grow on me offensively. Nine points today was a nice outing. However, I still question how many points the guy he was guarding got. The whole idea in basketball is for you to score more than the guy you’re guarding. When you do that you win. Would love to see his metric of points scored versus points given up to the opponent he guards. I got to believe the staff does this?

I would do the same with Wiz. My gut feeling with him is his metric would not be favorable.

This is close to a +/- as I could find. According to this he is +2, but it looks like it's approximate.

Wiz is -3.1 after -8 last season.

AJ Clayton is a top tier big man in the MAC. Get used to it. Man I wish he had 2 more seasons after this not one. He just keeps getting better. He keeps refining those skills in the paint and watch out.

Someone tell Hadaway to get off the perimeter, stop shooting 3s and go use those rebounding skills.

EJ goes for 36 minutes...Boals most trusted scorer right now?

Best game by far from Jaylin, much more like last year. If we get anywhere close to that from him in conference play we will be top 4 for sure.

Sheldon is a scorer, really played his way into more minutes. At least the Brown Bros injury struggles have brought Sheldon into the light. He can really shoot it. And i think his free throw troubles are an aberration, he will work thru it.

Reef some nice assists but still too many shots. I see him more as an elite defender and someone where the offense can comfortably run thru but not end with too much.

13 for 16 from the line, finally a non-cringey performance there.

NIU may have been missing 2 scorers but they still shot 43% from 3 and drained 12 threes.

BG is another big one early. I imagine line will be near 0. A win there helps wipe out the home loss to Toledo and set us up for a potentially big start with the directional Michigans to follow.

I also can't help but think in today's world, what Trent would have made to transfer after his freshman year. I would say minimum 1.5 million...hell..maybe more. For the younger generation here...there will never, ever be a player like Trent come through this program again. He makes Enrique Freeman look average.
In 1993 Tom Izzo, then an assistant at Michigan State, offered a cash payment to Trent to transfer. Trent told Larry Hunter, who told Charles Ping, who called the president at MSU and told him his next call would be to the NCAA if they didn't back off. That cash payment was a whopping $10K.
