Minus his outburst postgame, I thought Hardaway…
???
I haven't seen anyone give the full breakdown, and I watched the entire thing unfold, so I'll bite. Right after the buzzer, as Miami started celebrating their undefeated regular season and what should be an at-large bid clinched, Hadaway grabbed the ball, threw it at the team as hard as he could, and charged. Some of the guys on the team were initially able to hold him back, but then he got loose and charged again. Fortunately, his teammates finally got a hold of him, and he was escorted into the locker room without a handshake line. I thought he played well yesterday outside of the usual whining and complaining about obvious fouls he got called for, but long-term, the after-game antics are what I'll remember.
Miami had every right to celebrate the way they did. It's a rivalry game with so much more than usual on the line, especially with Travis Steele getting hit by trash thrown on the floor, the many chants, and the general hostility the entire game. The atmosphere was electric, and I personally have no issue with the celebration. If the roles were reversed and OU were finishing the season at Miami with a perfect season on the line, they would have done the same thing.
On a more positive note, it was so much fun to watch this team play the way we all thought they were capable of before the season. Simmons has been awesome for the last month after a rocky start, and he carried them in multiple games where Pav struggled. Last night, both of them showed up in a big way, and it was the first time I can remember that happening. If they play like that, and Dior and Sheldon are making shots, anything can happen in Cleveland. I also view the 6-seed as a blessing in disguise, as I want nothing to do with playing a Toledo team and the guard tandem that they have. I would rather play Kent any day over a team that hot, and one that we've only beaten once in the Boals era.
Last thought: I was devastated that Pav didn't have one of those two shots bounce his way. Nobody on this team deserved that moment more than he did, and it really sucks that he was so close. He showed up in Athens with what looked to be broken confidence, and game by game, you could watch it come back. All of this culminated in the performances he's had this year and a massive one last night. Yes, he is a flawed defensive player, but he plays hard every game and you almost never see him complaining. It's already been said on this board, but I don't want to know what this season would have looked like without him.
