Only those with green-tinted glasses and opponents will be excited about Boals' next season. Feels like Phillips 2.0.

I think this team just didn't gel like they could've. There was very small flashes of them being the best team in the MAC but they just couldn't put it all together. If I were Boals, lets get a couple guys from the portal and go from there.

I'm willing to give Jeff one more year, but it's about time to move on. Poor recruiting, poor development of players, poor roster management, questionable in game coaching. His ability to retain players year to year seems to be good, so maybe the program culture is ok. Although I wonder that we don't lose players to the portal because this is the highest level most of them can play at, and they don't want to transfer down.

I imagine coach shivered down his spine when he saw the tourney bracket featured a round 1 matchup with his kryptonite.

Boals' teams have finished in fifth place in four of his six seasons. No reason to think this will change in season seven. The lone championship was a fluke.

I still think we should have given Saul one more year due to some of the injuries. So, I'm not yet on the Fire Boals bandwagon.

I agree. We need more regular season championship banners hanging in the Convo. Nobody gives a rip about no stinking fluke NCAA tournament trip and win. If Boals can't bring home championships in February then get him outta here!

Oh wait, they don't hang those, do they?

Ohio hangs banners for being a two seed and having the same record as Akron. Ask Jim Christian? They hung one when he was coach. The last outright regular season championship was when Hunter was coach.

Alumni of Northern State are saying the same thing right now.

Of course at Ohio, they also secretly give contract extensions for coaches who have not had a winning record in four seasons. And two of those four seasons are six win seasons! Just blows my mind that the administration can renew the womens Coach after that kind of record. I realize at one time several seasons ago the womens program was good. Bobby Knight was good at one time also, but those days are long gone. And for the record Boals shouldn’t be let go but he is overpaid compared to his peers. He is the highest paid coach in the MAC.

After a mediocre season and poor tourney showing, is Boals job safe?

Yea, it’s safe because of the injuries and would likely take a losing season after this one before his seat gets warm imo.

If we look at that last 3 seasons where Boals no longer has any Saul holdovers, he’s still 53-43 and 33-21 in MAC play. Not great, not bad. Just average. I said in a thread earlier this season that this might just be as good as gets with him — average.

It’s very apparent he needs to make some changes, however.

As Ohio Head Basketball Coach through 3-13-2025:

Ohio 85
Toledo 90 (OT)

2025 MAC Tournament Quarterfinals

Sadly Tod K is Jeff B’s Daddy. Mind-numbing stat against Toledo.

Akron 5-8
Kent State 6-7
Toledo 1-11

Career record: 12-26

Afraid we're stuck with Boals and his awful system for three more years.

While I'm not calling it, I do remember my shock when Hunter was fired, and also when Brian Burke was fired in football. In each case, I thought that the program was in relatively good shape despite recent setbacks. I guess I don't think like an AD. But, Old Freak Nasty for Burke was not the smartest move in collegiate football history.

If you get rid of Boals who do you hire without having big NIL money in place? If the problem is NIL shouldn't that be addressed first? Division 1 is in such flux right now might wait to see what the industry looks like in a few years then hire a coach to fit the new order.

Perhaps Boals' mediocre record has folks reluctant to contribute NIL money!

Are you crazy? This administration just paid Boals and made him the highest paid coach in the league. They aren’t getting rid of Boals. More like giving him
A secret renewal for finishing no better than a three seed yearly.

Groce touts that 100% of his transfer players have ended up playing at least one year professionally, a tribute to his ability to develop players. Boals will never be able to say that to a prospective transfer.

Boals after the game said Reef and Clayton are going to be great pros. I am sure they will find teams overseas, but saying they will be “great” is a big stretch.

I actually sort of think Clayton may have a better pro career than college career. In the pros, he'll be asked to do a lot less, and won't play so many minutes out of position. He's got a fast, high release from three and is mobile enough to play passable defense. Think he can be a solid stretch 4 in Europe somewhere. Not a top league, but he can have a career if he wants one.

We just renewed the women’s coach. Boals should be inline for an extension at those levels of expectations.

I would agree with this.
