Why is it important?  I don't know.  James Kirk would get it.  Spock, not so much.  Community/regional/university pride I guess.  I could imagine a lot of positive town/gown mojo if Burrow and Watson are the real deal and helping football and basketball win.  It would be fun.  Hey, rest of the state, we are using some local boys to kick your arse type of fun.  Also, it just feels like we should have a leg up on a kid close to the university.  Seems like we lose out on some want-to-play-close-to-home kids.  Here's a few who can do that right here.  That's rare.  Hope we can take advantage of it.


How do you know they want to play close to home? Not all kids want to do that. Especially kids from small towns like Athens. There is such a thing as going out and seeing the rest of the world.

DC. Appreciate the personal story and the Zanesville input. I think it is safe to say I would love to see a HS game anywhere but now you have my interest piqued. Always looking for an inside tip on a good game.  Maybe stop on the way to Dusquene Dayton or run up from Lancaster. this weekend. What they got this weekend? I think if you tried to talk to TOS you had the wrong guy. Should have talked to Ku or an asst. More likely to get a friendly ear at the time. 

Humpty committing to Crackron just illustrates the desire to get away from home. IIRC correctly his pops passed away while he was there. I remember meeting him as he was making the haul on gamenights pretty far. 





 


Zanesville has a bye in the OHSAA tournament and won't play again until Feb. 26th @ 7pm.  Borna, you will be dissapointed at the atmosphere in the gym.  It is one of the cookie cutter new schools popping up in Ohio.  The program is not supported locally as it should be.  The Senior class just lost a regular season game for the first time in a calendar year in football or basketball.  They have a very deep program, but no one with any size.  The coach's son is the one that we really missed on.  He played three years at Albany and then took his post gratduate, free transfer season last year and played at Maryland.

Thank you for noting this MBC.  As for the actual argument in the thread,  I'd like Kretzer (or McAdams), or a guy like him on our team.  I'm in the "I don't care" where a kid comes from camp.  I just want them to fit the program's goals and be decent citizens.

Any old-timers remember local Steve Bruning on basketball team? If I remember, he had some sort of connection with the  university.

And if Zanesville is local, wouldn't Cambridge with the Ford brothers be considered local?

Agreed.  We've had this discussion on here from time to time and a lot of people feel that we should step up efforts to bring in the local kids (no one has seemed as bitter about it as Shaq though). It would be great if we could get some local kids that could star for the Bobcats but let's be honest. That list of players we "missed" on isn't all that impressive.  And how do you know this kid from Athens High right now wants to play for Ohio?  If he's like me I wanted to go someplace away from home.  And since one of our assistants had a son play with him I'm guessing we know all about him. 

In my mind I'm pretty happy about our recruiting.

Heck yeah.  My roommates were all radio/TV majors and they would broadcast a lot of the Athens High games so I got to see him play a ton.  He was a great high schooler and I thought we had hit a home run when he signed with us.  I learned the valuable lesson that I had wasn't going to make a living as a college scout.  Still he was fun to watch in high school.

Heck yeah.  My roommates were all radio/TV majors and they would broadcast a lot of the Athens High games so I got to see him play a ton.  He was a great high schooler and I thought we had hit a home run when he signed with us.  I learned the valuable lesson that I had wasn't going to make a living as a college scout.  Still he was fun to watch in high school.

Steve is a fabulous person and was a fabulous HS player. He graduated 2 years before me from AHS. 6'5" small forward with a feathery jump shot. His senior year he and Forest (Woody) Mayle were an awesome PF/SF combo and tons of fun to watch. Danny Knee brought him to the Bobcats but he injured an ankle badly in his freshman (or sophomore?) year and never seemed to fully recover.  He was all about the academics anyway, earning his Ph.D. and is now a Professor of Communications at Capital University and serves on and off as AD and also as Associate Provost when the school has needed his services.  His older brother Mike played ball too, and his old man, former OU Provost under Dr. Ping and a Professor of Psychology, was a regular at Sunday Grover ball for decades.  It wasn't too long ago that he showed up for a game at the Middle School where some of the former Grover crowd still play with the next generation.  Great family, usually in their seats in the lower bowl at the Convo.

GoCats -- I don't know if they want to play locally.  I won't hold any ill will towards these kids at all for playing elsewhere.  None at all.  But, that won't stop me from being bummed out.

I'm a total homer fan on this.  If the best prospect in the state if from Akron, I'd love him to come to OHIO and blow off Akron.  So... you know, this ain't exactly a logical thing we are talking about.

My arbitrary version of local is 30-40 miles from Athens (if that sneaks in Parkersburg).  And my version of regional is a wobbly triangle of anything inside the Ohio River (with the addition of Parkersburg) from Wheeling to Columbus to Ironton.

Steve's sister Kathy was also a pretty good athlete.  In fact, Jim and Marlene Bruning are the only area parents who have all three of their kids in the Athens High Hall of Fame.  As for Steve, I thought it was his back that was the nagging injury that limited his play at OU.  And one last thing, the guy had great jumping ability.  If I'm not mistaken, he won the SEOAL high jump championship one year.

You may be right about his back, Alan.  I think he completely rolled an ankle early in his freshman year, maybe even in pre-season practice, that initially limited his playing time for awhile and then the back issue became the major problem over his career.  I just remember being so excited to see him suit up for the 'Cats and him not being able to go.  As to his jumping ability, I just remember him throwing down dunks in 8th grade (I was a 6th grader, in those days AMS was 6-7-8) and being MESMERIZED.

This is just the thread that comes up every couple of years and angers me each time. GET THE BEST PLAYERS. I don't care if they are from Athens or Senegal, let's get good players and win games.

I also never understand the people who think we should put so much focus on local players. Have you ever seen a High level HS basketball game in Cincy, Cleveland, Chicago? The dudes that are their 8th men would have scored 20 a game in the TVC when I was in school. If we have an outlier great player from Athens, AWESOME, recruit him. Don't talk to me like we missed out on pistol pete just because humpty hitchens didn't come here.

Athens got manhandled tonight by Warren Local (Jeff and Fake Jeff are proud alumni). Is it time for a thread drift to demand Ohio start heavily recruiting Evan French? He lit up Watson and Burrows.

You won't get much town/gown mojo by recruiting AHS kids. The people that attend/follow Athens games are pretty much all the same ones that are our best fans and season ticket holders. Heck, at the game tonight it seemed like 1/2 the crowd was in OU gear. If we think by recruiting local it wins new fans (at least in the case of Athens or the other county schools)...I don't think it does much. Most of these high school fans are coming to our games anyway.

I've seen a lot of Ibi Watson. I seriously question if he's D1 material. Tonight's game REALLY brought that to light against better competition. French meanwhile is headed to West Liberty (Division 2).

Also, after watching the game tonight, I'm not so sure I want Burrows as a QB. The more I see him, the more I realize that his body language and leadership skills are atrocious. He lacked any energy or competitive spirit it seemed...just acted like he'd rather be somewhere else. This is not unusual for him. The kid (Burrow) is 17 years old - and it is unusual for him to look or act like that. I have seen him play every game of his high school career (both football and basketball). He's just a competitor and is too hard on himself when he's not performing. (hence the body language) ... But to say you don't want him at OU is absolutely ridiculous. How often does OU have a chance to get a QB that already has official offers from big time BCS schools?

When his career is over, he will have at least climbed to No. 4 on the all time passing list in the state of Ohio. 4th all time in the history of the state!

To say you wouldn't want him is absurd.

But it won't matter anyways - he's off to a BCS school like WVU or Maryland ... And I believe his last offer came from Yale.

As for Watson. He is a young sophomore - just turned 16 a few weeks back. You will see him mature and grow physically into a legit D1 player.

Why don't these athletes count? There are OU athletes all over OUr rosters from Athens, Nelsonville, Gallipolis, Warren, Chillicothe, Lancaster, etc.
Every player you mentioned had to WALK ON at OU.

p.s. $10.00 bucks says I smoked you at time or another inside Grover Center! :)
