I imagine we will, but I also imagine they'll have to think about it a bit. Not playing in a third-tier tournament might be a good idea. Not because of prestige or anything like that, but simply because our team is so injured it might not help to roll some of these guys out for a (let's face it) meaningless game.

Or, if we accept, should we bench all our injured guys?

I don't think any postseason game is a meaningless game.

I really don't.

Even if it is a lower level tournament. It's post-season basketball. It's another chance to watch our seniors play. It's another chance to see some extra minutes from younger players. It's another chance to host a game in the Convo. It's another chance for a fire JC thread on BA.com and other outrageous posts. What's not to like about that?

I hear your point about injuries. I would not put injured players in positions they don't need to be in. Nor do I think JC would do that.

I forget the rules on CBI & CIT......but we would have a pretty good opportunity to secure a bye and/or host a home game, no? I would take that opportunity in a heartbeat.

Any post season invite will be accepted if not simply for marketing and recruiting (X straight post season trips!) and as a resume builder for various convolites.

I wouldn't mind getting Nick a few more games if he really wants to.

These tournaments (and the NIT, to some extent) aren't for the fans -- they're for the players and coaches.  Gives the seniors an opportunity to play a few more games; gives the rest of the players and the coaches an opportunity to build on next year.  I don't think any coach would put an injured player at unnecessary risk for one of these games.  I'm not fond of these tourneys, but if a bid comes along, sure, take it.

The last 5 seasons counting this year Ohio has won 20, 24, 29, 19, 22 games. If JC can eek out 24 wins (Miami, 2 MAC Tourney, 1 CIT/CBI) that would be a respectable showing. The more wins this program can get the more time it buys JC in recruiting. Another NCAA bid would be great too and Ohio is always a threat in Cleveland. Accept whatever post season tournament we can get into and try to perform.

24 wins is much more than merely "respectable"

It SOUNDS nice for us fans, but the question is does it really benefit the team, and are the kids gonna put effort into it.  An old friend of mine with decades of experience as a high school official drove from Santa Fe NM to Denver last March for our tourney game.  He emailed me afterward and said it appeared to him that half the team had no interest in playing...

Can't say I was surprised.  They went all the way to Denver to play in an almost empty gym (according to my pal) in the first round of a tournament that even hard core hoops fans don't care about.  

Post season experience?  Well, I guess, since you are playing a real game after the season has ended.  But no one should confuse the CBI-CIT with big time, televised post season play.   Any relation between these tourneys and the NCAA is accidental. 

If coach thinks there's value, and if the team really wants to play hard, fine.  Otherwise, it's a waste of time and money.

Overall I enjoyed the game, although a win would have been very nice. Quite a few Bobcat fans in attendence on short notice and while the guy may be right about some of the guys, we came very close to winning that game.
DU is not a bb school and I don't think they have much of a following. They were one of the best teams in their conference and when they didn't win their championship, I think their fans hung it up. I think most Ohio fans understand the value of post-season play a little more. By the way, DU is terrible this year, so they should have enjoyed what they had last year. They're just a hockey school anyway like our cross state rivals, oh wait, that may not be true anymore.

Ever since VCU won the CBI and ended up in the final four the next year I can't help but think that the CBI/CIT is worth it 100%. It's great experience for our young guys to get used to tournament situations.

The benefit to the team depends on how they approach it.  Last year's team was expecting a return to the NCAA and when it didn't happen they barely showed up for the NIT game in Denver.  This year's team had no such expectations so playing later in March, no matter what the circumstances, they might be eager to play.

I look at it from this angle:  If you have a chance to hang another banner, you try to do so.  Sure, it's not NCAA or NIT, but it's showing an addition to a winning tradition by having success.

We did not hang banners for our past CBI or CIT appearances. But I do agree, if you can play...play.

That said, this is a stupid question.  Players want to play.  And the more experience the guys who'll return get, the better.  This is hardly rocket science.

If guys don't put effort into the game (a game) then bench them and put guys out there who care.


Any player who does want to keep playing....is not a player.

Teams that have played in the CBI/CIT:  Oregon State, St. John's, Wichita State, Stanford, VCU, St Louis, Creighton, Oregon, Pittsburgh, Butler, Purdue, and Texas. We should play in any post-season tourney we can get in.

Again, the concern was not any "we're too good for this" nonsense but injury concerns. Maurice looks like he's getting better, so this is less pertinent.
