No surprise here. Although most thought he should have been let go last year too.

Letting a coaches contract run out is the definition of a small-time program.

They built a brand new arena that only has capacity of 4,700.  That is a small-time program.

I have some good friends that are BG Grads.  I couldn't say this to them.  BG is a long ways back, and the coach isn't the #1 issue.  Budget, and the non-caring about basketball culture are the problems ahead of that.

It's a miracle that program ever was as good as it was. Boring small town, in the shadow of Toledo. At least the fans used to love that team and seemed to lift it above its own natural place in the pecking order. Toledo has taken the steps to bury them for the next few decades. If you're a great player at Central Catholic or St. John's or Rogers or if you're from Detroit...heck any urban or suburban place in the country...why in the world would you choose BG over UT?

Campus Pollyeyes? I went to BG for the first time for our game there last season. The entire campus looks like a penal colony. The new gym, while nice and shiny, is a glorified high school gym.

Campus Polleyeys, though. That was solid.

BG hasn't won a MAC championship since 1968. 1968?! At this point they should just give up because that is beyond embarrassing. who does that?

seriously though.. BG's commitment to mediocrity is astounding. How do you take $10m and downgrade your facilities? And how do you donate $10m to a bball program and not insist a winning coach be hired immediately?

But it was still a program that produced guys like Anthony Stacey, Keith McCleod and Antonio Daniels until recently. The last decade has been even a precipitous freefall from there. There just wasn't any talent there. Louis Orr won that one regular seasno title with duct tape and staples and Otis Polk getting rebounds because the ball was attracted by physical laws of science into orbit around him.

Of the so-called major residential campus state universities, BG is widely regarded as the weakest with far more difficulties than just hoops...

When I first heard that Orr was out, I started wondering if Boals would be interested, but that lasted about 5 seconds. I doubt Matta would encourage him to take the job, as he did with Groce when he was offered ours...

This is what frustrates me. $10 mil and what does the administration do? Completely quits on the program.

10 mil and they take the cheapo route a D-3 program would take and don't fire Orr. An extra year of mediocrity. Dumb. That admin doesn't even want to be D-1.

That said, I'll take a program like BG lacking the administration over a program like EMU lacking the base infrastructure any day of the week in this conference.

Due to the overall pathetic nature of the MAC and decisions by recruits that I will never comprehend, if BG hires the right coach, they could win the MAC again fairly easily.  Like next year easily.  Its just how the MAC works.

But, hiring the right coach sure ain't easy.

Wow. That was overdue.

Second the prison look. When my pops was judging NCAA gymnastics he used to park us at the old gym while he went and judged. Not that you could do that anymore but it gave me 4-5 hours of time in gyms that were on campuses across the midwest. BG was the worst place I can remember in my childhood as I always thought it looked like a reformatory. The past several years going up there for games I recalled those memories as I stood on the front steps of Anderson waiting precisely for the clock to reach one hour before gametime as the tcket folks stood inside watching people freeze their arses off outside in that ubiquitous wind and arctic cold that seems to envelope the campus. The old gym at BG was dark and dank and kind of creepy....unlike the ones at SIU, Balls, Miami and Dayton to name a few/

Agreed with posters above that they gave up on this program. My track coach was a very good athlete out of Rogers and introduced me to Sid Sink and Dave Wottle at an all comers meet at Wayne HS in Dayton right after their Olympic trip in 72. They were very proud BG alums representing their school in front of the entire world. Really too bad that they have not enough pride or direction in the program to figure out how to make a go of it. Seems like the fanbase there is hungry for a winner when they have had a chance. A 10M dollar benefactor? Those are hard to come by.

COmmensurate with what they expect. If we were to build anew there would be many arguing in this direction rather than 8, 9  or 10 K. GonZaga built anew and only put 6K in despite the high profile of their program nationally. Only 1200 students can get tix and there is a whole procedure for getting in. I think the BG situation puts more value on the facility and the impact on recruits than it does on sightlines (the corners are really pathetic IMO) and capacity. Not sure why they thought 4700 was enough unless they looked at places like Gonzaga and thought it would suffice....or just gave up and built based on present attendance knowing they would never again win. I personally love the Convo and really do not care about the empty seat because I know if we build a winner we will have many games where we fill it up. Thank you Vern Alden.

Anderson Arena was a great venue when BG had good teams. Yes it outlived it's use, but still was an exciting place to watch a game especially when the student section was going wild.

And contrary to some, I think they do have a very nice new arena even thought it's a little on the small side. With the right coach they should be able to draw some much better recruits than a lame duck coach like Orr could, so they can easily turn the program around in a few years. And we all know that if you win the fans will come.

Ummm, first off you do realize it's been since 1968 since we won a MAC championship in football don't you? So we "do that" also. Should we just "give up" in football? Second, BG doesn't have that $10 million right now. They will start receiving payments of it when Bill Frack dies and it won't come in a lump sum, it will be disbursed over a period of time. Third, Louis Orr was saved partly in their hiring of a new AD. And if you think they were happy about that I suggest you check out their board. Fourth, I think the Stroh Center is very nice and even nicer than the Convo in many ways. Is it smaller? Yes, no doubt. But it's still a nice arena. You could also make the argument ours is too big. We lead the MAC in attendance and play in an arena two-thirds empty on most nights. Further, after our game last week I overheard several of our players talking about things they wish we had that they do before they got on the bus.

Do I think we have a better campus and school? Yes. But I sometimes think we get a little arrogant with our mindset and beliefs about who we are, because trust me, for every person who wonders why someone went to school X, Y or Z over Ohio, there are just as many people wondering why someone went to Ohio instead of X, Y or Z. I can't tell you how many time I have had to defend OU for not bring a shit school and just for partying, or an Appalachian hilljack school to those unfamiliar with OU. I love Ohio no matter what others think. But to each his own.

That was the last time we won a MAC football championship.   Following your logic we should give up.

Interested in hearing what you heard. I have put what I have heard for years up here and got some negative feedback and comments about them being coddled......a little further input is appreciated, especially when it is fresh off them seeing other facilities.

LOL! Just asked the same thing. It's not like neither BG basketball or OU football haven't compete for titles. They both have and both have played in MAC Championship games, they just fell short from winning them. I'd rather compete and lose like we did to NIU or CMU than to never play in one at all.

I have found that inability to pick up on sarcasm on the internet is a generational problem as opposed to anything specific to Ohio University.

The whole town has the appeal of a relocation camp from WWII.  When I was a junior in HS they took about ten or 15 of us over for some kind of all-day seminar.  I think it was a campus visit in disguise.  It was rainy and dreary and made the campus look even worse (if that was possible).

They seem to be putting more effort into football than b-ball these days.  They'll probably get as assistant from a Big Tenfinity or maybe even an A10 or Big East school but it's not a good situation to come into.

It makes it kind of interesting that Xavier hired BG's former AD once Bobinski got the job at GaTech. Now, if the basketball program starts to take a turn for the worse over at Cintas, you will definitely hear a loud thud and door slam after he's cast off.

I don't really have a problem with the Stroh Center being on the small side. Not every basketball program can have a 10K seat arena. And really, if they build the program up, how many games would draw over 5K or 6K? Three? Four? I would argue the only tickets people would want to buy for must-see MAC games for them would be Toledo, Ohio and Akron. Maybe Kent.

I've always thought of BG as a MAC Football school anyways.

Don't forget that Orr was retained after last year due to money issues.  They didn't have the money to buy out the last year as I remember it.
